Convective Heat Transfer With And Without Film Cooling In High Temperature, Fuel Rich And Lean Environments, Nathan K. Greiner 2014 Air Force Institute of Technology

Convective Heat Transfer With And Without Film Cooling In High Temperature, Fuel Rich And Lean Environments, Nathan K. Greiner

Theses and Dissertations

Modern turbine engines require high turbine inlet temperatures and pressures to maximize thermal efficiency. Increasing the turbine inlet temperature drives higher heat loads on the turbine surfaces. In addition, increasing pressure ratio increases the turbine coolant temperature such that the ability to remove heat decreases. As a result, highly effective external film cooling is required to reduce the heat transfer to turbine surfaces. Testing of film cooling on engine hardware at engine temperatures and pressures can be exceedingly difficult and expensive. Thus, modern studies of film cooling are often performed at near ambient conditions. However, these studies are missing an …

Feasibility Considerations For A Long-Range Passive Vibrometer, Alan Marchant, Chad Fish, Jie Yao, Phillip Cunio, Wellesley Pereira 2014 Utah State University

Feasibility Considerations For A Long-Range Passive Vibrometer, Alan Marchant, Chad Fish, Jie Yao, Phillip Cunio, Wellesley Pereira

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Hypertemporal imaging enables the long-range characterization of vibration modes and amplitudes of a passively illuminated structure. The vibration signature arises from modulation of the bidirectional reflection distribution function (BRDF) as the surface normal oscillates with respect to a fixed, directional source. This paper considers the instrument design characteristics and environmental factors that limit passive vibrometer performance including BRDF angle sensitivity, receiver spatial resolution, interference from atmospheric scintillation, and intrinsic detector performance. It also identifies a sensor architecture that is capable of characterizing surface vibration at amplitudes below 1 mrad rms and discuss detector technology that can further improve long-range vibrometer …

Design And Evaluation Of Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle Upper Stage Engine, Joseph R. Simmons Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle, a modification to traditional engine architectures, is to find those missions and designs for which it has a competitive advantage over traditional upper stage engines such as the RL10. Previous work focused on developing an initial design to demonstrate the feasibility of the Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle. This research expanded the original cycle model in preparation for optimizing the engine's specific impulse and thrust-to-weight ratio. The changes to the model allowed automated parametric and optimization studies. Preliminary parametric studies varying oxidizer-to-fuel ratio, total mass flow, and chamber length showed significant improvements. Drawing on modeling …

On Uav Robust Nonlinear Control In Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Vladimir V. Golubev, William MacKunis 2014 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

On Uav Robust Nonlinear Control In Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Vladimir V. Golubev, William Mackunis

Publications

We examine a new robust nonlinear flight control technology that employs an array of synthetic-jet micro-actuators embedded in UAV wing design in order to completely eliminate moving parts (such as ailerons) thus greatly enhancing maneuverability required for small fixed-wing air vehicles operating, e.g., in tight urban environments. Estimated fast response times are critical in mitigating gust effects while greatly improving flight stability and control. The new controller design is particularly advantageous for high levels of uncertainty and nonlinearity present both in the unsteady flowpath environment and in the embedded actuator’s response. The current work focuses on a benchmark case of …

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fluid diodes are fluidic devices that enhance fluid flow in a particular direction while inhibiting it in the opposite direction without the use of moving parts. This is accomplished through the use of nozzle shaped geometry on one side of the diode, and cusp shaped geometry on the opposing side. Fluid meets very little resistance as is travels though the nozzle side of the diode. The cusps on the other side of the diode reduce the effective flow area, thereby inhibiting flow. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a fluid diode installed in a reconstructed …

Increasing Participation In The Pilot Weather Reporting (Pirep) System Through User Interface Design, Stephen M. Casner 2014 National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Increasing Participation In The Pilot Weather Reporting (Pirep) System Through User Interface Design, Stephen M. Casner

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Although pilots regard pilot weather reports (PIREPs) as valuable flight planning resources, the number of PIREPs that pilots submit is relatively small. In a previous survey, pilots indicated that submitting PIREPs sometimes requires too much effort, and that they are often unable to recall the information fields required to complete a report. Pilots also indicated that the idea of submitting a PIREP often does not occur to them, and that they feel that other pilots are mainly interested in receiving reports about severe weather. In this study the authors attempt to address obstacles to submitting PIREPs by proposing two alternative …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, We Study the Role of Finite Size Effects on the Determination of Interfacial Thermal Resistance between Two Solids Characterized by High Phonon Mean Free Paths. in Particular, We Will Show that a Direct, Heat Source-Sink Method Leads to Strong Size Effect, Associated with Ballistic Phonon Transport to and From, and Specular Reflections at the Simulation Domain Boundary. Lack of Proper Account for These Effects Can Lead to Incorrect Predictions About the Role of Interfacial Bonding and Structure on Interfacial Thermal Resistance. We Also Show that the Finite Size Effect Can Be Dramatically Reduced by Introduction of …

Thermal Transport Across A Substrate-Thin-Film Interface: Effects Of Film Thickness And Surface Roughness, Zhi Liang, Kiran Sasikumar, Pawel Keblinski

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations and a Model AlN-GaN Interface, We Demonstrate that the Interfacial Thermal Resistance RK (Kapitza Resistance) between a Substrate and Thin Film Depends on the Thickness of the Film and the Film Surface Roughness When the Phonon Mean Free Path is Larger Than Film Thickness. in Particular, When the Film (External) Surface is Atomistically Smooth, Phonons Transmitted from the Substrate Can Travel Ballistically in the Thin Film, Be Scattered Specularly at the Surface, and Return to the Substrate Without Energy Transfer. If the External Surface Scatters Phonons Diffusely, Which is Characteristic of Rough Surfaces, RK is Independent …

Dynamic Analysis Of Granular Battery Assembly, Rohan Dudaney, Waterloo Tsutsui, Weinong Chen

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Collisions and impacts are an inevitable reality when it comes to commercial cars and vehicles, but as batteries become more prevalent it is vital to understand how they react dynamically and as a system to better protect both the passengers and toxic chemicals inside of the batteries. One potential solution is to surround these batteries with non-vital tubes that can be sacrificed and help protect the batteries. This study is done to understand the structure of batteries and to test how an assembly of sacrificing cells and batteries reacts in an impact situation to see if there is significant energy …

Fiber Length And Orientation In Long Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites, Imad Hanhan, Connor Sullivan, Bhisham Sharma, Michael Sangid 2014 University of Central Florida

Fiber Length And Orientation In Long Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites, Imad Hanhan, Connor Sullivan, Bhisham Sharma, Michael Sangid

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Carbon fiber composites have become popular in aerospace applications because of their lightweight yet strong material properties. The injection molding process can be used to produce discontinuous fiber composites using less time and resources than traditional methods, thereby broadening carbon fiber composites’ applications in different industries. Utilization of longer fibers offers more load carrying capability and superior strength properties for injected molded composites. Since the fiber length and the orientation distribution in Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFTs) directly affects LFT composites’ material properties, there is a need to study the microstructure of LFTs and characterize fiber length and orientation distributions. Therefore, …

Noise Source Analysis For Simulated Turbulent Jets, Robert W. Skidmore, Nitin S Dhamankar, Kurt M. Aikens, Gregory Blaisdell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is an efficient computational approach to study turbulent flows and has seen increasing application to the study of jet noise. The main challenge of LES has been the realistic simulation of experiments at reasonable cost. Recent LES studies have been realistic enough to gain important insight into jet noise from the large amount of data generated. This study attempts to characterize the sources of noise from a turbulent jet via analysis of the LES results. Three different analysis tools are implemented. The first two are comparable to analyses used on experimental data: two-point cross-correlations between far-field …

Dynamic Response Of Textile Material Under Transverse Impact, Yuchen Zheng, Matthew C. Hudspeth, Weinong W. Chen

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Textile materials, such as Dyneema and Kevlar, are the major raw materials for state of the art military or personal security armor vests. However, in impact experiments, actual observed penetration speed is much lower than theoretically predicted penetration speed. Each armor vest is composed of high performance yarns which are woven together to form fabrics, which when stacked together form a vest. Understanding penetration behavior of yarns is essential to evaluate the performance of fabric, which will be useful for the design of better vests. The project is composed of three parts: static experiments, dynamic yarn experiments and dynamic fabric …

Microthruster Fabrication And Characterization: In Search Of The Optimal Nozzle Geometry For Microscale Rocket Engines, Katherine L. Fowee, Alina Alexeenko

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

A major consideration in microsatellite design is the engineering of micropropulsion systems that can deliver the required thrust efficiently with tight restrictions on space, weight, and power. Cold gas thrusters are one solution to the demand for smaller propulsion systems to accommodate the advancements in technology that have allowed for a reduction in the size and thus the cost of satellites. While much research has been done in understanding the flow regimes within these microthrusters, there is a need to understand how different nozzle designs affect microthruster performance. This requires that experimental data be collected on varying nozzles shapes (orifices, …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The Precision Tracking Space System (PTSS) was a constellation of infrared (IR) sensors planned by the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to observe and track ballistic missile objects in flight. The PTSS program funded testing to characterize the parasitic heat loads expected on the actively-cooled multi-band IR sensor assembly, a subassembly within the optical telescope, thereby reducing uncertainty in the cooler heat lift requirements and system power budget. A detailed flight-like thermal analog of the sensor assembly, including designed conductances, surface treatments, and multi-layer insulation, was tested in a fixture that simulated its flight interfaces with a controllable interface temperature. …
