Oscillatory Flow Driven By Cavity, Jeremy Ralph Bonifacio 2019 Claremont Graduate University

Oscillatory Flow Driven By Cavity, Jeremy Ralph Bonifacio

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Flows past a cavity are known to exhibit an oscillatory behavior with an amplitude and frequency dependent on the incoming flow properties and the geometry of the cavity. Experiments and numerical analyses have been performed to determine the effects of a flow passing through an axisymmetric cavity and discharging into a transverse freestream. The study focuses on the mechanisms involved in the generation of pulsatile flow and its influences on a jet in crossflow. Flow characteristics through the cavity and the jet in crossflow interaction were analyzed using the computational fluid dynamics software Siemens Star-CCM+. The experimental analysis utilized a …

On Hybrid Temporal Basis Functions For Stable Numerical Solution Of Time Domain Boundary Integral Equations, Fang Q. Hu 2019 Old Dominion University

On Hybrid Temporal Basis Functions For Stable Numerical Solution Of Time Domain Boundary Integral Equations, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Problems in unsteady aerodynamics and aeroacoustics can sometimes be formulated as integral equations, such as the boundary integral equations. Numerical discretization of integral equations in the time domain often leads to so-called March-On-in-Time (MOT) schemes. In the literature, the temporal basis functions used in MOT schemes have been largely limited to low-order shifted Lagrange basis functions. In order to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the temporal basis functions, a Fourier analysis of the temporal interpolation schemes is carried out. Based on the Fourier analysis, the spectral resolutions of various temporal basis functions are quantified. It is argued that hybrid …

The Design And Testing Of A 500 Lbf Liquid Oxygen/Liquid Methane Engine, Manuel Jesus Herrera 2019 University of Texas at El Paso

The Design And Testing Of A 500 Lbf Liquid Oxygen/Liquid Methane Engine, Manuel Jesus Herrera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The development of liquid oxygen/liquid methane (LOX/LCH4) propulsion systems has recently become a topic of interest ever since this particular propellant combination was determined to be a suitable candidate for use in space exploration, more specifically missions to Mars. This propellant combination is unique because the propellants can be synthesized from local resources on Mars, a process called In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). ISRU would allow for spacecrafts to be lighter and/or increase its payload capacity to Mars-bound missions because the vehicle would not have to store the propellants required for the voyage back to earth.

For this reason, The University …

Bayesian Model Averaging Based Storage Lifetime Assessment Method For Rubber Sealing Rings, Di Liu, Shaoping Wang, Chao Zhang, Mileta M. Tomovic

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Rubber sealing ring is one of the most widely used seals. It is always stored for a period of time before put into use, especially in aeronautic and aerospace applications. It is necessary to evaluate the storage lifetime of rubber sealing rings. However, due to the long storage lifetime of rubber sealing rings, two issues need to be handled, including model uncertainty and lack of storage lifetime data. A Bayesian model averaging based storage lifetime assessment method for rubber sealing rings is proposed in this article. The Gamma distribution model and Weibull distribution model are selected as the candidate models …

Influence Of A Backward-Facing Step On Swept-Wing Boundary-Layer Transition, Jenna L. Eppink, Richard W. Wlezien, Rudolph A. King, Meelan Choudhari

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental measurements were performed on a swept flat-plate model with an airfoil leading edge and imposed chordwise pressure gradient to determine the effects of a backward-facing step on transition in a low-speed stationary crossflow-dominated boundary layer. Detailed hot-wire measurements were performed for three step heights ranging from 36 to 49% of the boundary-layer thickness at the step and corresponding to subcritical, nearly critical, and critical cases. In general, the step had a small, localized effect on the growth of the stationary crossflow vortex, whereas the unsteady disturbance amplitudes increased with increasing step height. Intermittent spikes in instantaneous velocity began to …

Investigation Of Ps-Pvd And Eb-Pvd Thermal Barrier Coatings Over Lifetime Using Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, Matthew Northam 2019 University of Central Florida

Investigation Of Ps-Pvd And Eb-Pvd Thermal Barrier Coatings Over Lifetime Using Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, Matthew Northam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extreme operating temperatures within the turbine section of jet engines require sophisticated methods of cooling and material protection. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) achieve this through a ceramic coating applied to a substrate material (nickel-based superalloy). Electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) is the industry standard coating used on jet engines. By tailoring the microstructure of an emerging deposition method, Plasma-spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD), similar microstructures to that of EB-PVD coatings can be fabricated, allowing the benefits of strain tolerance to be obtained while improving coating deposition times. This work investigates the strain through depth of uncycled and cycled samples using …

The idea of a new fan being made for these two generators arose when they were not adhering to design requirements. A base mixed-flow fan was created to test on multiple generators. Upon creating a prototype, it will be tested to prove if it can increase the air flow, decrease temperatures, and increase power and life of the machines. They all proved to be successful and achieve the main objectives for this project. Data such …

Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan 2019 The University of Akron

Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Using ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for high-temperature applications in jet engines increases durability and reduces weight and cooling requirements resulting in improved efficiency and fuel savings. Understanding, detecting, and monitoring different types of damage is essential to achieve optimal performance of CMC components. The Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method is a non-destructive technique of estimating damage in composite materials.

DCPD technique works by measuring nodal potential differences when current is flown through the material. Direct current spreading in different woven and laminate composites is modeled to follow a ladder resistor network in which the nodal voltages decrease exponentially as …
