Orbit Determination With Event-Based Cameras To Improve Space Domain Awareness, Conor M. Wisentaner 2022 Air Force Institute of Technology

Orbit Determination With Event-Based Cameras To Improve Space Domain Awareness, Conor M. Wisentaner

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to assess the utility of a COTS EBC for SDA applications by evaluating its ability to produce data for orbit updates of resident space objects. Unlike traditional frame-based imaging sensors, the pixels on an EBC activate independently when a change in brightness is detected to produce a continuous data flow on a per pixel basis. This unique functionality provides much higher temporal resolution than traditional frame-based sensors, such that an EBC can generate far more data points from a single observation than a frame-based sensor. However, current COTS EBCs have less spatial resolution than …

Additive Manufacturing Of Molybdenum For High Temperature Structural Applications, Megan L. Bustin 2022 Air Force Institute of Technology

Additive Manufacturing Of Molybdenum For High Temperature Structural Applications, Megan L. Bustin

Theses and Dissertations

This research considered additive manufactured (AM) molybdenum (Mo) and the effect of three variables on microstructure, mechanical properties, and the relationship between the two. Test temperature, laser speed, and shield gas or build atmosphere were varied, and samples tested and analyzed using a three-point bending test, chemical composition, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. The relationship among variables and results using a Design of Experiments was limited compared to the inclusion of every tested sample. Most effects were expected: samples tested at room temperature were brittle without statistical significance; increasing laser speed resulted in decreased ductility and strain, smaller grain …

A Study Of Pressure Probe Response In Steady And Unsteady Flows, Michael T. Charonnat 2022 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

A Study Of Pressure Probe Response In Steady And Unsteady Flows, Michael T. Charonnat

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is two-fold: to analyze the directional calibration of a 3-hole probe in steady flow and to develop a method for the interpretation of measurements recorded with a novel, fast-response Pitot-type probe in unsteady, turbulent flow. Calibration data for the 3-hole probe’s two side ports was taken in the steady, non-turbulent region of a free jet and was evaluated for symmetry. In addition, data that was recorded using one side port in two independent calibration runs was compared to study repeatability. Misalignment was found between the nominally symmetric data sets, which may be the result of …

Low-Reynolds-Number Locomotion Via Reinforcement Learning, Yuexin Liu 2022 New Jersey Institute of Technology

Low-Reynolds-Number Locomotion Via Reinforcement Learning, Yuexin Liu

Dissertations

This dissertation summarizes computational results from applying reinforcement learning and deep neural network to the designs of artificial microswimmers in the inertialess regime, where the viscous dissipation in the surrounding fluid environment dominates and the swimmer’s inertia is completely negligible. In particular, works in this dissertation consist of four interrelated studies of the design of microswimmers for different tasks: (1) a one-dimensional microswimmer in free-space that moves towards the target via translation, (2) a one-dimensional microswimmer in a periodic domain that rotates to reach the target, (3) a two-dimensional microswimmer that switches gaits to navigate to the designated targets in …

Effect Of Current Density Ramping On The Anodic Reaction And Morphology Of Aerospace Aluminum Alloys, Peter Totaro Jr. 2022 New Jersey Institute of Technology

Effect Of Current Density Ramping On The Anodic Reaction And Morphology Of Aerospace Aluminum Alloys, Peter Totaro Jr.

Dissertations

Aluminum anodizing has been experimented with and studied over the last century because of its ability to form uniform, well ordered cellular coatings on aluminum alloys. Anodizing aerospace alloys has been problematic, due to the alloying elements used to add strength and resistance to stress cracking corrosion. These intermetallic compounds, i.e., copper and zinc, promote oxygen evolution and stress as they accumulate in and on the surface of the forming aluminum oxide. These inclusions lead to increased electrical resistance that forms porous and flawed coating, which can lead to industrial and field failures. The amount of voltage placed on the …

A Deep Learning Approach For Airport Runway Identification From Satellite Imagery, Mahmut Gemici 2022 Rowan University

A Deep Learning Approach For Airport Runway Identification From Satellite Imagery, Mahmut Gemici

Theses and Dissertations

The United States lacks a comprehensive national database of private Prior Permission Required (PPR) airports. The primary reason such a database does not exist is that there are no federal regulatory obligations for these facilities to have their information re-evaluated or updated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the local state Department of Transportation (DOT) once the data has been entered into the system. The often outdated and incorrect information about landing sites presents a serious risk factor in aviation safety. In this thesis, we present a machine learning approach for detecting airport landing sites from Google Earth satellite …

A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews 2022 Space Dynamics Laboratory

A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A graph-based network flow approach to constellation planning is presented that respects spacecraft resources and mission constraints to arrive at a preliminary operational schedule. The method discretizes task fulfillment opportunity windows into graph nodes and then adds edges based on feasibility of transition between these opportunities, either by slew maneuvers or extended-time task fulfillment during downlink operations. Intelligent graph pruning is applied to improve computation performance and provide a versatile planning capability with a minimal impact on the resulting solution. A network flow formulation allows for a simultaneous search for spacecraft plans using a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The …

Photoelectrons are crucial to atmospheric physics. They heat the atmosphere, strengthen 28 planetary ambipolar electric fields, and enhance the outflow of ions to space. However, 29 there exist only a handful of measurements of their energy spectrum near the peak of 30 photoproduction. We present calibrated energy spectra of pristine photoelectrons at their 31 source by a prototype Dual Electrostatic Analyzer (DESA) instrument flown on July 11 32 2021 aboard the Dynamo-2 sounding rocket (NASA № 36.357). Photopeaks arising from 33 30.4nm He-II spectral line were observed throughout the flight above 120km. DESA also 34 successfully resolved the rarely observed …

Comprehensive Review Of Heat Transfer Correlations Of Supercritical Co2 In Straight Tubes Near The Critical Point: A Historical Perspective, Nicholas C. Lopes, Yang Chao, Vinusha Dasarla, Neil P. Sullivan, Mark Ricklick, Sandra Boetcher 2022 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Comprehensive Review Of Heat Transfer Correlations Of Supercritical Co2 In Straight Tubes Near The Critical Point: A Historical Perspective, Nicholas C. Lopes, Yang Chao, Vinusha Dasarla, Neil P. Sullivan, Mark Ricklick, Sandra Boetcher

Publications

An exhaustive review was undertaken to assemble all available correlations for supercritical CO2 in straight, round tubes of any orientation with special attention paid to how the wildly varying fluid properties near the critical point are handled. The assemblage of correlations, and subsequent discussion, is presented from a historical perspective, starting from pioneering work on the topic in the 1950s to the modern day. Despite the growing sophistication of sCO2 heat transfer correlations, modern correlations are still only generally applicable over a relatively small range of operating conditions, and there has not been a substantial increase in predictive capabilities. Recently, …

Three-Axis Magnetometer Calibration With Norm Preservation, Seth Lichlyter 2022 Mississippi State University

Three-Axis Magnetometer Calibration With Norm Preservation, Seth Lichlyter

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a set of methods for the purpose of improving the calibration of three-axis magnetometers. Specifically, these methods aim to improve the accuracy of the bias estimation methods currently in use. The first proposed method utilizes a constrained optimization problem based on norm preserving. The second proposed method finds the same bias estimate as the first method, but in a computationally more efficient manner. The last proposed method tackles the case where the value of the local geomagnetic field is only imprecisely known. Computer simulations demonstrate the viability of the proposed methods.

Experiments To Mitigate Flow Recirculation In A Closed Anechoic Chamber Using Mesh Screens As Turbulence Suppressors, Tori Kay Wolverton 2022 Mississippi State University

Experiments To Mitigate Flow Recirculation In A Closed Anechoic Chamber Using Mesh Screens As Turbulence Suppressors, Tori Kay Wolverton

Theses and Dissertations

The desire to gather acoustic data of a propeller in simulated hover without environmental effects is met with the challenge of recirculating flow in a closed anechoic chamber. Flow recirculation in an anechoic chamber is not ideal because the effects of it being ingested by the rotor cause unsteady loadings on the propeller. This unsteady loading causes vortex noise from the turbulence introduced by the recirculation of the flow. The aim is to study the acoustic signature of a propeller separate from external factors and engine noise. Two different propellers with three different screen combinations were tested in a closed …
