Experiments Of Propeller-Induced Flow Effects On A Low-Reynolds-Number Wing, Gavin K. Ananda, Robert Deters, Michael S. Selig

Publications

Novel findings are discussed in this paper that will be especially beneficial to designers and modelers of small-scale unmanned air vehicles and high-altitude long-endurance vehicles that both operate at low Reynolds numbers (Re = 50,000-300,000). Propeller-induced Oow effects in both tractor and pusher configurations on a recta ngular wing using the Wortmann FX 63-137 airfoil (a common low-Reynolds-number high-lift airfoil) are presented in this paper . Significant performance benefits can be found for a wing in the tractor configuration. Experiments, including trip tests and upper-surface oil Dow visualization, show and verify that the propeller slipstream induces early transition to turbulent …

Investigating Forward Flight Multirotor Wind Tunnel Testing In A 3-By 4-Foot Wind Tunnel, Reed Danis 2018 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Investigating Forward Flight Multirotor Wind Tunnel Testing In A 3-By 4-Foot Wind Tunnel, Reed Danis

Master's Theses

Investigation of complex multirotor aerodynamic phenomena via wind tunnel experimentation is becoming extremely important with the rapid progress in advanced distributed propulsion VTOL concepts. Much of this experimentation is being performed in large, highly advanced tunnels. However, the proliferation of this class of vehicles extends to small aircraft used by small businesses, universities, and hobbyists without ready access to this level of test facility. Therefore, there is a need to investigate whether multirotor vehicles can be adequately tested in smaller wind tunnel facilities. A test rig for a 2.82-pound quadcopter was developed to perform powered testing in the Cal Poly …

The Design And Implementation Of A Supersonic Indraft Tube Wind Tunnel For The Demonstration Of Supersonic Flows, Daniel Kenneth Johnson 2018 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Design And Implementation Of A Supersonic Indraft Tube Wind Tunnel For The Demonstration Of Supersonic Flows, Daniel Kenneth Johnson

Master's Theses

Historically, the endeavor of scale testing flight vehicles at supersonic Mach numbers, especially for long durations, has required the development of closed-loop wind tunnels, which are extremely expensive both to build and operate due to the high complexity and incredible power required to drive such a system. The intermittent blowdown wind tunnel, indraft tunnel, and shock tunnel have alleviated many of these cost requirements to some degree, whilst facilitating testing at very high Mach numbers and enthalpies; however, these systems require the handling of gases at pressures and temperatures that can be prohibitive for many university settings. The Ludwieg tube …

Development Of A Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Longitudinal Model For Future Flutter Testing, Said S. Hamada 2018 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Development Of A Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Longitudinal Model For Future Flutter Testing, Said S. Hamada

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis presents the system identification of the longitudinal motion of a small unmanned aerial vehicle with flexible characteristics. The unmanned aerial vehicle of study is an off-the-shelf aircraft with limited knowledge about the dynamic model. The first task in obtaining a model for flutter testing is determining the rigid body model. Specifically, this thesis will focus in the development of the aircraft and obtaining the longitudinal rigid body model. This involves the assembly and configuration of the avionics and sensors, performing experiments to determine mass and inertia properties and using software tools for aerodynamic analysis to get preliminary values …

Homography-Based State Estimation For Autonomous Exploration In Unknown Environments, Andres S. Chavez Armijos 2018 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Homography-Based State Estimation For Autonomous Exploration In Unknown Environments, Andres S. Chavez Armijos

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis presents the development of vision-based state estimation algorithms to enable a quadcopter UAV to navigate and explore a previously unknown GPS denied environment. These state estimation algorithms are based on tracked Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) points and the homography relationship that relates the camera motion to the locations of tracked planar feature points in the image plane. An extended Kalman filter implementation is developed to perform sensor fusion using measurements from an onboard inertial measurement unit (accelerometers and rate gyros) with vision-based measurements derived from the homography relationship. Therefore, the measurement update in the filter requires the processing …

Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cube-Satellites (CubeSats) are nanosatellites composed of cube shaped units, each nominally 10cm to a side and around 1kg in mass. Due to their inherent size and weight limitations, it is often impractical to use conventional attitude, or rotational, control methods such as thrusters on these small satellites. Several methods, including magnetorquer rods and small reaction wheels, are often used instead of traditional methods to work around the size and weight limitations. As a new alternative to these methods, a permanent magnet mounted on a rotatable shaft could be used to achieve attitude control. In much the same way that a …

The Challenges Of Processing Kite Aerial Photography Imagery With Modern Photogrammetry Techniques, Jeremy W. Aber, Tyler A. Babb

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) is a traditional method of collecting small-format aerial photography used for work in a variety of fields. This research explored techniques for processing KAP imagery with a focus on some of the challenges specific to photo processing. The performance of multiple automated image compositing programs was compared using a common set of 29 images. Those packages that were based on a photogrammetry approach outperformed the non-photogrammetric software, and generated similar levels of quality to one another. While all three photogrammetric packages produced satisfactory output, each had unique challenges.
