Equivalent-Area Studies For Sonic Boom Loudness Mitigation On A Commercial Supersonic Aircraft Configuration, Zachary N. Foster
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Since the early 1970s, the FAA has banned commercial supersonic flight over populated areas. This ban has limited aerospace manufacturers’ and commercial aircraft companies’ ability to design and operate subsonic aircraft in their fleets. Since then, research has been conducted to understand the sonic boom and learn how to minimize its loudness. The work presented in this project report aims to use a 1D low-fidelity analysis to study the effect of perturbations to the outer mold line (OML) of a representative model of the N+2 Quiet Commercial Supersonic Concept Aircraft. Using a 1D analysis that employs an equivalent area method, …

Master's Theses
Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) is a laser flow diagnostic measurement technique used to measure spatial and temporal velocity fields. In an effort to promote experimental aerodynamic research, specifically an entry point for students to learn Particle Imaging Velocimetry, an in-house Class 3B laser PIV system was developed and its experimental results were verified with a Class 4 laser. Both systems were integrated on the Cal Poly Water Tunnel Laboratory. The work emphasizes the application of lasers controlled by a micro-controller to perform microsecond-based pulses and integrating a newly-developed device with an old system consisting of software, cameras, and synchronizers. The …

Since drones cannot fly in any kind of weather, they are not safe for time-sensitive activities. The study examines how the passage of weather systems in Iraq leads to the ban on drone flights, and how these weather conditions impact the aerodynamic forces of the drone. Hourly climate data for the study area were obtained from ECMWF ERA5 and CAMS in NetCDF format for four climate stations (Erbil, Baghdad, Rutbah, and Basrah). A ScanEagle drone was chosen for this study. The Python programming language was used to perform mathematical operations to calculate the ban on drone flights. ArcGIS 10.8 was …

Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Flow over an open cavity has a dynamically complex flowfield, generating pressure fluctuations that can amplify shear stress and cause structural damage to the stores within it and the aircraft as a whole. These pressure loads are linked to large-scale resonant shear layer phenomena. Consequently, it is crucial to establish this link by characterizing the large-scale flow events conditional upon pressure measurements to improve the prediction and control of the detrimental pressure fluctuations. In this study, a link between the pressure measurements (to control) and large-scale shear layer events (to actuate) will be established using a combination of two data-driven …

Contributions To The Understanding Of Turbulent Boundary Layers Over Curved Walls, Nicholas Zhu
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A wind tunnel campaign was conducted to investigate the DARPA Suboff boundary layer. To emphasize the axisymmetric boundary layer, the generic submarine model's sail, appendages, and propeller were omitted. The study focused on the afterbody from 70–95% of the model length to examine the concurrent pressure gradient and wall curvature effects, which are commonplace in engineering. Three particle image velocimetry (PIV) configurations were employed to measure the boundary layer in detail: one spanned the entire afterbody, another had narrow strips sampled at 16 kHz, and the third used two simultaneous orthogonal measurement planes. Considerable effort was made to reduce the …

Heat Transfer To Arrays Of Oscillating Impingement Jets, Alex Q. Clay
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In gas turbine engines, the desire to increase turbine entry temperatures has become more relevant in order to increase engine efficiency. However, materials used in these engines can only withstand temperatures that are so high. Because of this, the ability to cool hot section components will always limit operating temperatures. Impingement cooling jets have become a common way of cooling due to the high rates of heat transfer that can be achieved. However, previous research has shown that the interaction of impingement jets with cylinder wake can improve the intensity and uniformity of heat transfer. The goal of this study …

We investigate unsteady, two-dimensional laminar fluid flow around cylinders, focusing on understanding the impact of injecting methane gas through two diametrically opposite arcs on the cylinder in the crossflow of the second fluid. This study encompasses applications in mixing and dispersion, which are crucial in various technological and natural processes. Our analysis addresses velocity field’s contribution to the spatiotemporal distribution of transported quantities. We observed that mixing induces a transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Depending on the injected-to-crossflow velocity ratios, the wake vortices downstream of cylinder arrays separate from or connect to the injected gas. This phenomenon significantly impacts …

Bi-Modal Excitation Of A Supersonic Rectangular Jet, Benjamin Malczewski
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This work addresses the issue of supersonic rectangular jet noise via bi-modal excitation. A Mach 1.5 heated rectangular jet with a 2:1 aspect ratio is considered. Theoretical work is presented in which a Reduced-Order Model (ROM) is used in conjunction with the Linearized Euler Equations to predict the nonlinear growth and decay of various frequencies due to the interaction between harmonically related modes and the mean flow. Scope is limited to a symmetric disturbance. The case of no interaction is used to help identify a dominant coherent structure, referred to as “f”. For the symmetric disturbance, a Strouhal number of …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization For Unmanned Aerial Systems In Bridge Inspections, Kristoffer B. Borgen, John Mott
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Bridge inspections are an expensive and time-consuming process, varying significantly with a bridge’s style, height, width, and length. Inspections create interruptions that interfere with bridge use, as the examination requires partial or total closure, causing traffic delays. Unmanned aerial system (UAS) use has increased significantly over the past decade, including assistance and coordination during bridge inspections. However, the impact on a UAS from high winds and turbulent airflows induced by a bridge’s structure can decrease flight safety during inspections. Visualization of these hazards is difficult for UAS operators; therefore, a process to estimate the velocity and locations of these hazardous …

This paper determines the feasibility of adding a heater to an existing blowdown supersonic wind tunnel to unlock new high-enthalpy test applications, considering cost and power requirements at a variety of different states. This process includes both modeling the current range of test section properties in Cal Poly's blowdown wind tunnel and determining the new range of properties that a heat exchanger could induce. These results are verified with a computational fluid dynamics study. Additionally, sublimation and ablation properties of materials are explored to create appropriate models to study atmospheric re-entry once the heat exchanger is implemented.

The Pressure Distribution Of Rotating Cylinders Using An Onboard Wireless Data Acquisition System, Nathan Eller
Master's Theses
This thesis presents a novel, cost-effective method for mapping the pressure distribution on a rotating cylinder in cross flow, a phenomenon central to the Magnus effect. Utilizing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensors, a high-resolution data acquisition system was developed and integrated into a rotating cylinder model. Compared to traditional approaches, such as slip rings or one-off designs, this method proved significantly cheaper and faster while achieving comparable or superior resolution. The experimental setup, including a modified continuous rotation technique and adaptable model design, facilitated rapid testing across a broad range of Reynolds numbers and reduced frequencies, exceeding the …

Dissertations
Interactions of powders with high-temperature plasma and shockwaves occur in diverse scenarios, such as nuclear blasts, accidental industrial dust explosions, solid propellant combustion in explosive charges and when removing contaminants from surfaces. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), known for generating shock and plasma, is a promising lab-scale technique for simulating these interactions. Studies with ESD involved placing powders near a spark-producing gap between electrodes and observing mechanical and chemical processes like particle motion and ignition. A limited range of spark conditions and material properties have been tested, which facilitated the development and validation of preliminary computational models describing this system. Significant gaps …

Consequences Of Spatial Heterogeneity For Turbulent Wake Development, Ryan Scott
Dissertations and Theses
Spatial heterogeneity is an fundamental property of natural systems. In fluid dynamics subtle variations in fluid motion give rise to chaotic turbulent flows. When a fluid passes an object it retains an imprint of the object as a momentum deficit known as a wake. The resulting spatial structure of the wake is intrinsically linked to the object responsible for its creation. The coupling between geometric complexity in wake producing entities and turbulent wake evolution is considered in terms of spatial heterogeneity from individual wakes through turbulent canopy flows. First a novel Lacunarity-based method is developed for quantifying spatial heterogeneity in …

Bio-inspired winglets were studied with the goal of better understanding the structure of the wingtip vortices they generate. Measurements of the tip vortex were previously carried out using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (sPIV). The bio-inspired winglet was tested on a rectangular NACA 0012 wing section at a 5-degree angle of attack and at a chord Reynolds number of 900,000. Velocity field measurements were recorded at 0.7 and 2 chord lengths aft of the wing’s trailing edge. Compared to the wing with no attachment and a traditional blended winglet, the bio-inspired winglet’s vortex exhibited significantly less intense flow field properties. These …
