Non-Equilibrium Pressure Control Of The Height Of A Large-Scale, Ground-Coupled, Rotating Fluid Column, R. L. Ash, I. R. Zardadhkan 2013 Old Dominion University

Non-Equilibrium Pressure Control Of The Height Of A Large-Scale, Ground-Coupled, Rotating Fluid Column, R. L. Ash, I. R. Zardadhkan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

When a ground-coupled, rotating fluid column is modeled incorporating non-equilibrium pressure forces in the Navier-Stokes equations, a new exact solution results. The solution has been obtained in a similar manner to the classical equilibrium solution. Unlike the infinite-height, classical solution, the non-equilibrium pressure solution yields a ground-coupled rotating fluid column of finite height. A viscous, non-equilibrium Rankine vortex velocity distribution, developed previously, was used to demonstrate how the viscous and non-equilibrium pressure gradient forces, arising in the vicinity of the velocity gradient discontinuity that is present in the classical Rankine vortex model, effectively isolate the rotating central fluid column from …

Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller 2013 University of Kentucky

Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A turbulent channel flow was used to study the scaling of the combined effects of roughness and flow injection on the mean flow and turbulence statistics of turbulent plane Poiseuille flow. It was found that the additional momentum injected through the rough surface acted primarily to enhance the roughness effects and, with respect to the mean flow, blowing produced similar mean flow effects as increasing the roughness height. This was not found to hold for the turbulence statistics, as a departure from Townsend’s hypothesis was seen. Instead, the resulting outer-scaled streamwise Reynolds stress for cases with roughness and blowing deviated …

Near Wall Shear Stress Modification Using An Active Piezoelectric Nanowire Surface, Christopher R. Guskey 2013 University of Kentucky

Near Wall Shear Stress Modification Using An Active Piezoelectric Nanowire Surface, Christopher R. Guskey

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

An experimental study was conducted to explore the possible application of dynamically actuated nanowires to effectively disturb the wall layer in fully developed, turbulent channel flow. Actuated nanowires have the potential to be used for the mixing and filtering of chemicals, enhancing convective heat transfer and reducing drag. The first experimental evidence is presented suggesting it is possible to manipulate and subsequently control turbulent flow structures with active nanowires. An array of rigid, ultra-long (40 μm) TiO2 nanowires was fabricated and installed in the bounding wall of turbulent channel flow then oscillated using an attached piezoelectric actuator. Flow velocity …

Wind Loading On Trees Integrated With A Building Envelope, Aly Mousaad Aly, Alberto Zasso, Girma Bitsuamlak, Alberto Nicola Longarini, Arindam Gam Chowdhury

Faculty Publications

With the sustainability movement, vegetated building envelopes are gaining more popularity. This requires special wind effect investigations, both from sustainability and resiliency perspectives. The current paper focuses on wind load estimation on small- and full-scale trees used as part of green roofs and balconies. Small-scale wind load assessment was carried out using wind tunnel testing in a global-effect study to understand the interference effects from surrounding structures. Full-scale trees were investigated at a large open-jet facility in a local-effect study to investigate the wind-tree interaction. The effect of Reynolds number combined with shape change on the overall loads measured at …

Novel Airframe Design For The Dual-Aircraft Atmospheric Platform Flight Concept, Eric Michael Mckee

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial airframe was designed for the innovative Dual-Aircraft Atmospheric Platform flight concept that exploits stratospheric wind velocity gradients to remain aloft indefinitely. Classical aircraft preliminary design techniques and high-fidelity tools were used to establish a baseline configuration.

Performance characteristics of numerous airfoil profiles were evaluated with two-dimensional flow software in an effort to determine the best-candidate airfoil for the unique application. Vortex-Lattice method tools were used to investigate the sensitivity of three-dimensional design parameters upon overall vehicle aerodynamic performance and determine both static and dynamic stability characteristics of the airframe. Performance capabilities of the finalized airframe …

Distributed Forcing On A 3d Bluff Body With A Blunt Base, An Experimental Active Drag Control Approach, Ethan Bruce Erlhoff 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Distributed Forcing On A 3d Bluff Body With A Blunt Base, An Experimental Active Drag Control Approach, Ethan Bruce Erlhoff

Master's Theses

This paper seeks to explore the effects of an active drag control method known as distributed forcing on a 3D bluff body with a blunt base. The 9.5 x 15.25 x 3 inch aluminum model constructed for this experiment has an elliptically shaped nose and rectangular aft section. The model is fitted with four, 12 Volt fans, forcing the freestream air into and out of 1 mm thick slots on the upper and lower trailing edges. The forcing is steady in time, held at a constant forcing velocity though all Reynolds numbers, but varies roughly sinusoidally in the spanwise direction …

Confined Mixing Of Multiple Transverse Jets, Allen J. Bishop 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Confined Mixing Of Multiple Transverse Jets, Allen J. Bishop

Master's Theses

The mixing performance of multiple transverse jets has been evaluated experimentally. Measurement techniques included laser Doppler velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence. Basic findings are consistent with results presented in literature for single jet mixing behavior. Mixing performance has been compared to literature for the single jet case and the Holdeman parameter has been re-evaluated for effectiveness at low jet numbers. A single jet in a confined crossflow was found to have a local minimum at B(d⁄D) = 0.721. Results for two jets indicate monotonically decreasing unmixedness for the range of conditions tested, with no local optimum apparent. Data for …

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti

Theses and Dissertations

Motivated by the demands of simulating flapping wings of Micro Air Vehicles, novel numerical methods were developed and evaluated for the dynamic simulation of membranes. For linear membranes, a mixed-form time-continuous Galerkin method was employed using trilinear space-time elements, and the entire space-time domain was discretized and solved simultaneously. For geometrically nonlinear membranes, the model incorporated two new schemes that were independently developed and evaluated. Time marching was performed using quintic Hermite polynomials uniquely determined by end-point jerk constraints. The single-step, implicit scheme was significantly more accurate than the most common Newmark schemes. For a simple harmonic oscillator, the scheme …

The Characterization Of Material Properties And Structural Dynamics Of The Manduca Sexta Forewing For Application To Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle Design, Ryan P. O'Hara

Theses and Dissertations

The Manduca Sexta species of moth serves as a source of biological inspiration for the future of micro air vehicle flapping flight. The ability of this species to hover in flapping flight has warranted investigation into the critical material, structural, and geometric properties of the forewing of this biological specimen. A rigorous morphological study of the Manduca Sexta forewing was conducted to characterize the physical and material properties of the biological forewing for the purpose of developing an advanced parametric three dimensional model finite element analysis (FEA) model. This FEA model was tuned to match the experimentally determined structural dynamics …

Freedrop Testing And Cfd Simulation Of Ice Models From A Cavity Into Supersonic Flow, Thomas J. Flora 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Freedrop Testing And Cfd Simulation Of Ice Models From A Cavity Into Supersonic Flow, Thomas J. Flora

Theses and Dissertations

Weapon release at supersonic speeds from an internal bay is highly advantageous. For this reason, both experimental and numerical methods were used to investigate store separation from a cavity (L=D=4.5) into Mach 2.94 flow. The experiment used a piezoresistive pressure transducer, Schlieren and high-speed photography for data acquisition. The computational solution used the OVERFLOW solver. A sphere and a Mk-82, scaled to 1:20, were formed using frozen tap water. The sphere model was freedrop tested experimentally and computationally, while the sub-scale store shaped model was freedrop tested experimentally. The total pressure was varied to alter the dynamic response of the …

Analysis Of A Goldschmied Propulsor Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Referencing California Polytechnic's Goldschmied Propulsor Testing, Cory A. Seubert 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Analysis Of A Goldschmied Propulsor Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Referencing California Polytechnic's Goldschmied Propulsor Testing, Cory A. Seubert

Master's Theses

The Goldschmied Propulsor is a concept that was introduced in mid 1950's by Fabio Goldschmied. The concept combines boundary layer suction and boundary layer ingestion technologies to reduce drag and increase propulsor efficiency. The most recent testing, done in 1982, left questions concerning the validity of the results. To answer these questions a 38.5in Goldschmied Propulsor was constructed and tested in Cal Poly's 3x4ft wind tunnel. The focus of their wind tunnel investigation was to replicate Goldschmied's original testing and increase the knowledge base on the subject. The goal of this research was to create a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher 2012 Western Michigan University

Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher

Masters Theses

An analysis of a newly proposed wind power extraction device called a wing oscillator was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A wing oscillator is a device that consists of two airfoils attached to a central pivot by means of a frame or shaft. Oscillatory motion is produced by controlling the angle of attack of the airfoils as a fluid flow is passed over the device. A robust mathematical scheme was developed to investigate the performance of the wing oscillator and was hooked to the CFD software package FLUENT through User Defined Functions (UDFs). Using the dynamic meshing analysis methods …

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister

Master's Theses

Hot-wire anemometry has been routinely employed for laboratory measurements of turbulence for decades. This thesis presents a hot-wire anemometer suitable for use with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). BLDS provides a unique platform for in- flight measurements because of its small, self-contained, robust design and flexible architecture. Addition of a hot-wire anemometer would provide BLDS with a sensor that could directly measure flow velocity fluctuations caused by turbulence. Hot-wires are commonly operated in constant-temperature mode for high frequency response, but require a carefully tuned bridge. The constant-voltage anemometer (CVA) uses a simple op-amp circuit to improve frequency response over …

Test And Verification Of Vortex Shedding For A 3d Bluff Body, Paul D. Innes, Charles E. Carlson 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Test And Verification Of Vortex Shedding For A 3d Bluff Body, Paul D. Innes, Charles E. Carlson

Aerospace Engineering

Testing of a 3D bluff body with and without end plate tabs was performed in the California Polytechnic State University 3x4 ft low speed wind tunnel. The CP values were obtained for the test case with no end plate tabs for speeds of 10, 15, 20, and 30 m/s. It was observed that stronger vortex shedding ocured at the higher speed test cases. The model was shimmed to be at approximately 5° angle of attack in order to obtain symmetrical negative CP spikes for the top and bottom of the model without tabs. Trends were observed and compared …

Aerodynamic Test Platform For Human Powered Vehicle (Hpv), Spencer Wangerin, Spencer Lillywhite, Colburn Davis

Mechanical Engineering

The Aerodynamic Test Platform (ATP) for the Cal Poly HPV Club is a system that was designed by Cal Poly mechanical engineering students to measure aerodynamic characteristics of a human-powered vehicle (HPV). The HPV team desired a system that could quantify the lift, drag, and other aerodynamic qualities of a full scale HPV at various orientations in oncoming airflow. Established methods for determining aerodynamic characteristics include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing of scaled models. The ATP was devised to simulate the test results given by a full-scale wind tunnel without requiring a wind tunnel large enough to …

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon 2012 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is no cost effective way to deliver a payload to space and, with rising fuel prices, currently the price to travel commercially is also becoming more prohibitive to the public. During supersonic flight, compressive shock waves form around the craft which could be harnessed to deliver an additional lift on the craft. Using a series of hanging plates below a lifting wing design, the total lift generated can be increased above conventional values, while still maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. Here, we study some of the flows involved in supersonic shockwave interaction. This analysis uses ANSYS Fluent Computational Fluid …

High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick 2012 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

To supplement past research on low speed unsteady airfoil responses to upstream disturbances, this work proposes and investigates a method to generate a turbulent momentum source to be convected downstream and interact with an SD7003 airfoil in a high-fidelity numerical simulation. A perturbation velocity field is generated from a summation of Fourier harmonics and applied to the forcing function in the momentum terms of the Navier Stokes Equations. The result is a three-dimensional, divergence-free, convected turbulent gust with applied statistical parameters. A parametric study has been done in 2D and 3D comparing the resultant flow fields and airfoil interactions for …
