The role of a dramaturg is one of the most difficult to define in theatre. While dramaturgy is almost always a research position, the responsibilities that a dramaturg will take on will vary from production to production depending on the needs and vision of the director and crew. For this reason the artistry of a dramaturg is incredibly fluid, adjusting constantly. My role as dramaturg for Little Shop of Horrors this fall illustrated this, for I took on a variety of responsibilities some traditional to dramaturgy and others new to me: researcher, dialect coach, and front of house designer.

This is a performance about remembering—remembering an array of verbatim scripture pieces that are knit together in a way that draws attention to an overarching theme. Lines were separated in a way that conveyed what each Biblical character was remembering, and in a way to answer the question that sparked this project, “How do we portray the voice of God in religious drama?” In Remember, each actor took on the voice of God at certain points, at other times they were spectators in biblical times, and sometimes they were themselves in modern times remembering these words. Scene design is more than providing actors the pieces with which they interact. It is part of creating the story’s whole world. In the Northwestern College Theatre Department’s 2021 children’s show, Charlotte’s Web, based on E.B. White’s classic novel and adapted by Joseph Robinette, all aspects of the show sought to draw in the eyes and imaginations of the thousands of children that graced our seats. From the arena seating arrangement to giant sparkling spiderwebs in each vomitorium, I wanted to create an immersive experience that enveloped the audience in the whimsy of talking animals and the realism of a …

As a costume designer for Northwestern’s Spring 2021 production of Eurydice, I did research into the different time eras and historical clothing of the eras throughout the play. The play is a Greek myth, set in the 40s, so my research included looks into both the Greek styles and that of the 40s and 50s, as well as a look at how the myth has been depicted in art throughout history. After gaining a deeper understanding of the repeating designs and silhouettes I saw throughout my research, I then turned to designing. I used the classic silhouettes of the times …

In actor training, Alexander Technique (AT) encourages release of tension, ease, efficiency of movement, and greater expressivity. It evokes deep transition into character, and helps the actor avoid injury. While AT often transpires in quiet spaces between an AT teacher and student, it can also be utilized as a practical tool by the director in group experiences, both in the classroom and in rehearsals, in order to restore expansiveness and brighten the creative inner life of the actor for the audience. Butoh is an underground dance movement in Japan that explores the human psyche in unconventional and sometimes grotesque ways. It originated out of the devastation of WWII Japan and rails against the rigidity of society as well as traditional theatre and dance forms. It has ties to Buddhism, in that both view suffering as a natural state of the world, and both may lead to depersonalisation (intentionally or otherwise), which is described as a loss of identity or sense of self. Gone unchecked, this detached exploration of the psyche can lead to personality dissolution, which can be especially problematic to …

Willy Loman is a salesman who is nearing the end of his life. As his mind begins to deteriorate, the viewer experiences several memories, dreams, arguments, and conversations that Willy has had. The Loman family in the play is in a perpetual cycle of denial, confrontation, and contradictions. Willy is most notably difficulty on his eldest son, Biff, who does not seem to live up to Willy’s expectations. The play tragically ends with Willy’s suicide and funeral. This theatrical version of the play will focus on the problematic issues that arise from chasing the notion of the “American Dream.” It …

The history of gender performance is long and complex, spanning across different times and places that are each fascinating in their right and worth being studied. This thesis focuses specifically on the drag performances that take place in and around Dayton, Ohio. The research presented here is based on explorations of two distinct time periods 100 years apart from each other, the turn of the 20th century and the modern day.
