Potentiality, Resistance And Bare Life: Giorgio Agamben On Melville’S Bartleby, Yanjun Wang, Yaping Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The idea of potentiality runs through Giorgio Agamben’s political philosophy. In his analysis of Herman Melville’s Bartleby, the Scrivener, Agamben thoroughly interprets potentiality and bare life through Bartleby’s “I prefer not to”. Agamben believes that Bartleby’s inoperativeness is the highest form of resistance, which exists as pure potentiality against the power apparatuses in modern society. Agamben considers Bartleby’s inoperativeness as the exact way to redeem bare life in modern society, where the state of exception already becomes normality. A writer’s dream turns into a nightmare as Sergei Maxudov’s novel is finally going to be presented as a play at the renowned Independent Theater of Moscow, and the rehearsals reveal the hypocrisy and frustration of producing a truly artistic piece. A bitingly funny adaptation of Russian literary giant Bulgakov’s famous unfinished theatrical novel, Black Snow is a hilarious send-up of Stanislavsky’s famous “Method” and the acting profession in general.

The Pirates Of Penzance, Department Of Theatre And Dance

“The Pirates of Penzance” is a comic opera written by W.S Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan that concerns Fredric, a young apprentice who is released from a band of Pirates. He then later meets the daughter of Major-General Stanley and falls in love. However, a revelation is made, and he must battle not only his sense of duty to his apprenticeship and the Pirates but to his new love. In this modern, and explorative telling of the opera, we put aside gender to challenge the notion of masculinity and femininity.

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

My presentation explores the relation between American masculinity and film musicals. I demonstrate how the dominance of the musical at the box office in the middle of the 20^th century reflects historical events and technological change. Drawing on both scholarly and popular criticism, I show how the images of masculinity that Americans once encountered on the silver screen have transformed as musicals became marginal to popular culture in the United States. My research considers both classic 20^th century musicals, such as Wizard of Oz (1939) and 42^nd Street (1933), and more recent experiments with the genre, including …

Historically, South African theater has utilized the stage as a platform to dismantle apartheid, pointing to its purposeful oppressive structure as the cause for much human suffering. In the 28 years since the dismantling of apartheid, contemporary South African theater has retained the same role, critically questioning the ways people are systematically disenfranchised. A need is surfacing, however, to address the causes for contemporary South African political disfunctions and societal inequities, other than apartheid.
