This thesis research and practical application focuses on rediscovering the playfulness of the actor's process and evaluating how that translates into an actor's performance. An actor's confidence can be found in their willingness to play with vocal placement, physical tensions, and emotional and mental patterns and depth. As an actor, my definition of play theory is the act of choosing to be spontaneous, creative, and explorative in the process of storytelling to ultimately lead to stronger choices that develop rich connections. Directing a musical production in a high school setting under normal circumstances is a challenging undertaking – doing so in the throes and aftermath of a global pandemic, with its school closures, quarantines and general chaos, was an exercise in patience and creativity. This thesis explores theatrical intimacy choreography and coordination during current significant social shifts. Covid restrictions, keen awareness of "correctness", and a desire to "do better" have allowed protective practices like theatrical intimacy to become not only generally accepted but expected in rehearsal spaces. Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

Two strong women are compared and contrasted in this article. Gond Rani Durgawati (1524-1564) led a resistance movement in Jabalpur against the Mughal rule of Akbar. Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858) organized the people of Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose, an officer defending the interests of the British East India Company. Both women continue to be remembered for their bravery and their loyalty to the people they ruled.

Mai Bhago (1670-1720), also known as Bhag Kaur, distinguished herself on the battlefield to defend the Sikh faith. Amrita Devi Bishnoi (d. 1730) is said to have sacrificed her life with 362 others to protect the Khejari trees in the Rajasthan desert. Both women continue to inspire social justice and ecological activism.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.

Throughout my life as a dancer, I often wondered if body image issues were purely found in Western concert dance (such as ballet and modern dance) and if folk dance instilled a sense of ownership over one’s body. It was apparent to me that being asked to stare at yourself in the mirror for hours on end in a ballet class, or any other dance style, forced you to see every tiny defect in your body. งานวิจัยนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์เน้นการค้นคว้าปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะ ผ่านการทำละครแบบร่วมสร้างที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ “ภาวะเงือก” หรือภาวะครึ่ง ๆ กลาง ๆ ของร่างกายเงือก งานวิจัยจึงได้ศึกษาตัวละครเงือกซึ่งเป็นตัวละครครึ่งคนครึ่งปลาในวรรณกรรมหลายเรื่องและสื่อต่างรูปแบบ จากนั้นตีความและเทียบเคียง กับสภาวะทางจิตใจของผู้ใหญ่วัยเริ่ม ที่ขาดความมั่นใจและการเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง เพราะเติบโตในสังคมที่มีค่านิยมที่แตกต่าง จากสิ่งที่เป็นทั้งในชาติพันธุ์ เพศสภาพ และวิถีชีวิตจากความเข้าใจเบื้องต้นผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกผู้มีส่วนร่วมในกระบวนการละคร 3 คน เพื่อพัฒนาละครร่วมสร้างเรื่อง “ภาวะเงือก” ขึ้นจากการรวบรวมผู้วิจัยเรียนรู้ว่าตัวละครเงือกเป็นตัวอย่างของการเปิดโอกาสให้ตนเองได้ทำตามความปรารถนาหรือความฝัน ผู้วิจัยคาดหวังว่าการสร้างสรรค์และนำเสนอละครเวทีเรื่อง“ภาวะเงือก” จะทำให้ผู้วิจัยและผู้มีส่วนร่วมในละครร่วมสร้างที่สนใจในตัวละครเงือกและสภาวะครึ่ง ๆ กลาง ๆ ของตัวละคร ได้พัฒนาความมั่นใจและเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองได้ ทั้งในด้านศักยภาพการแสดง และการใช้ชีวิตงานวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์นี้เป็นการค้นคว้าเชิงปฏิบัติการ ด้วยกระบวนการฝึกซ้อมละครร่วมสร้าง โดยผู้วิจัยร่วมสร้างผลงานในฐานะกระบวนกร และผู้มีส่วนร่วมในฐานะนักแสดง ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การได้พัฒนาละครในพื้นที่สร้างสรรค์ ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยและผู้มีส่วนร่วม รวมถึงทีมงานเบื้องหลัง เกิดความความมั่นใจและเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง จากการที่ได้แลกเปลี่ยนความรู้สึกนึกคิด แบ่งปันประสบการณ์ ร่วมแสดงผลงาน และร่วมสะท้อนทัศนะ ในระหว่างกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ละครร่วมสร้างกระบวนการพัฒนาละครร่วมสร้างในครั้งนี้ มุ่งเน้นที่การเคารพความแตกต่าง การแสดงความคิดเห็น ทัศนคติ และประสบการณ์ของผู้มีส่วนร่วม สนับสนุนการร่วมแรงร่วมใจในการพัฒนาผลงานการแสดงให้เกิดขึ้น เพื่อบรรลุเป้าหมายที่ตั้งไว้ร่วมกันได้ ผู้วิจัยและผู้มีส่วนร่วมจึง สามารถสร้างความมั่นใจและเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองได้จากการร่วมงานกันในครั้งนี้ กระบวนการละครร่วมสร้างนี้สามารถประยุกต์ใช้กับประเด็นที่น่าสนใจอื่น ๆ รวมถึงประเด็นทางสังคมต่าง ๆ เพื่อพัฒนาให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ที่ดีในอนาคตต่อไป

งานวิจัยเน้นปฏิบัติการสร้างการแสดงลำหมู่ในรูปแบบร่วมสมัย ซึ่งลำหมู่เป็นการแสดงหมอลำประเภทหนึ่งในภาคอีสานของประเทศไทย และในประชาชนลาว เป็นมหรสพประชานิยม หรือหมอลำกระแสหลัก ที่มุ่งนำเสนอความยิ่งใหญ่อลังการของเวที ฉาก แสง สี เสียง และโชว์ต่าง ๆ ที่มีความทันสมัย ในขณะที่ การแสดงลำหมู่แบบดั้งเดิมมีแนวโน้มที่ผู้ชมจะให้ความสนใจลดน้อยลง เพราะการฟังเรื่องราว ไม่เป็นที่นิยมเหมือนในอดีต ผู้วิจัยเห็นว่า แก่นสำคัญของการแสดงลำหมู่ คือ เรื่องราว กลอนลำ การลำ และการแสดง เป็นคุณค่าหลักของการแสดงประเภทนี้ จึงสนใจที่จะหากลวิธีสร้างการแสดงลำหมู่ร่วมสมัย ที่สามารถสื่อสารความคิดทั้งด้านคติธรรม และวิถีชีวิตจากวรรณกรรมอีสานเรื่อง ผาแดง-นางไอ่ รวมถึง รูปแบบการนำเสนอที่เหมาะสมกับผู้ชมอีสานรุ่นใหม่ โดยใช้แนวทางของละครดีไวซ์ เป็นเครื่องมือทำงานแบบร่วมสร้างกับศิลปินมือสมัครเล่นที่มีประสบการณ์เกี่ยวกับหมอลำ และใช้องค์ประกอบของการแสดงลำหมู่ผสานกับศิลปะการละครตะวันตกสมัยใหม่ ผ่านกระบวนการวิจัยปฏิบัติการ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า วิจัยในลักษณะ ‘ปฏิบัติ-นำ-วิจัย’ และการบูรณาการศาสตร์ภายใต้แนวทางละครดีไวซ์ นำไปสู่กระบวนการทดลองสร้าง และลงมือค้นหาวิธีสร้างการแสดงที่มุ่งตอบโจทย์วิจัยเป็นหลัก จนเกิดเป็นการแสดงลำหมู่ร่วมสมัยแนวทางใหม่ 2 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1. หมอลำอินเธียเตอร์ และ 2. หมอลำลูกผสม โดยทั้งสองรูปแบบให้ความสำคัญกับแก่นของการแสดงลำหมู่ ซึ่งมีวิธีการเล่าเรื่อง และรูปแบบ การนำเสนอที่เน้นการสื่อสารความคิดจากเรื่องเดิมไปยังผู้ชม กลอนลำที่สื่อสารเรื่องราว และการกระทำตัวละคร การลำที่สัมพันธ์ความรู้สึกภายในของผู้แสดง การแสดง (acting) ที่มุ่งเสนอความสมจริง และเป็นธรรมชาติ รวมถึง การใช้ลีลาร่วมสมัยที่เน้นสื่อสารเรื่องราวแทนการเต้น และภาพอลังการของมหรสพประชานิยม ผ่านกระบวนการทำงานที่ใช้หลักการกำกับการแสดงในการตีความเรื่อง โดยเชื่อมโยงกับ แก่นความคิด และสื่อสารผ่านองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ บนเวที การแสดงทั้ง 2 รูปแบบ สามารถเข้าถึง กลุ่มผู้ชมกลุ่มเป้าหมายที่เป็นนักศึกษา และคนอีสานรุ่นใหม่ ตลอดจนเป็นการสร้างพื้นที่การแสดงหมอลำแนวใหม่ เพื่อขยายมิติของศิลปะการแสดงหมอลำให้มีความหลากหลาย และเป็นทางเลือกใหม่ของผู้ชม ที่สนใจศิลปะการแสดงหมอลำ

งานวิจัยนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายในการศึกษา เพื่อวิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์บทร้องคำพรัดโนรา ถอดองค์ความรู้และหาแก่นสาระหลักคำสอนอันเป็นหลักปฏิบัติที่โนรายึดถือในการดำเนินชีวิต และออกแบบและสร้างสรรค์ละครร่วมสมัยเพื่อสื่อสารหลักคำสอนที่แฝงฝังอยู่ในวิถีของโนรา อันมีความโดดเด่นในเรื่องการให้คติสอนใจ คุณธรรมจริยธรรม หลักการใช้ชีวิตตามแบบฉบับของโนรา ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ทางศิลปะการแสดงที่เน้นการลงมือปฏิบัติ (Practice as Research) ด้วยกระบวนการละครแบบร่วมสร้างเป็นส่วนสำคัญ โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากผู้มีส่วนร่วมซึ่งเป็นนิสิตสาขาวิชาศิลปะการแสดง มีกระบวนการสร้างงานแบ่งออกเป็น 5 ระยะ คือ การพัฒนาประเด็น พัฒนาเรื่อง/บท พัฒนาการแสดง และนำเสนอผลงาน เพื่อนำเสนอแก่นสาระหลักของเรื่องคือ ความกตัญญู นำเสนอในรูปแบบละครลูกผสม (Hybrid Performance) ขนาดสั้นจำนวน 3 เรื่อง คือ บ้าน ครู และธรรมชาติ ใช้โครงสร้างการเล่นคำพรัดโนราแบบวิถีเดิมผสมผสานกับการเล่าเรื่องในวิถีใหม่ มาถ่ายทอดในมุมมองของความเป็นปัจจุบัน ผ่านประสบการณ์ ภูมิรู้ และทักษะของนักแสดง ด้วยการตีความใหม่ที่มีความลึกซึ้ง สร้างวิถีคิดใหม่ ที่มีความสัมพันธ์กันระหว่างนักแสดงกับผู้ชม ในลักษณะของละครเล่าเรื่องผสมผสานการรำ การร้อง แบบโนรา ใช้องค์ประกอบของดนตรีเพื่อเชื่อมการเปลี่ยนเรื่อง มีกลุ่มผู้ชมเป็นนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย ในจังหวัดสงขลา ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ประเมินด้วยการสนทนากลุ่ม จากการศึกษาพบว่า เนื้อหาและรูปแบบของการแสดงมีความสอดคล้องและสัมพันธ์กับบริบทในปัจจุบัน ทำให้ผู้ชมเกิดการเรียนรู้เรื่องราวของโนราที่มาจากบทคำพรัดได้ง่ายขึ้น ด้วยวิธีการเล่าที่สั้นและกระชับ ผสมผสานกับการนำองค์ประกอบของการแสดงโนรา ทั้งท่ารำ การร้องบท และดนตรี ทำให้ชวนติดตาม และในขณะเดียวกันละครก็สามารถสื่อสารแก่นเรื่องความกตัญญูได้ถึงแม้จะถูกนำเสนอผ่านการสร้างความหมายใหม่ก็ตาม นอกจากนี้ การนำบทคำพรัดมาวิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์อีกครั้งเป็นกระบวนการหนึ่งที่จะยังทำให้บทคำพรัดยังมีการใช้-ดำรงอยู่ ทำซ้ำและขยายความเข้าใจในวงกว้าง เกิดการตีความ เรียนรู้ความหมายที่แท้จริงที่ซ่อนอยู่

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการเขียนบทละครหญิงรักหญิงและศึกษาการสร้างสรรค์บทละครประเภทกอธิก (gothic) ที่นำเสนอประเด็นอคติทางเพศที่มีต่อหญิงรักหญิง ผู้วิจัยใช้แนวคิดองค์ประกอบวรรณกรรมกอธิกของ โรเบิร์ต แฮร์ริส (Robert Harris) เป็นแนวคิดหลักในการสร้างสรรค์บทละคร เนื่องจากผู้วิจัยต้องการนำเสนอประเด็นอคติทางเพศผ่านสัญญะความเป็น ‘ผี’ และ ‘การหลอกหลอน’ โดยกระบวนการเขียนบทละครนั้นผู้วิจัยตั้งต้นจากการศึกษาและวิเคราะห์ปัญหาอคติทางเพศที่หญิงรักหญิงประสบในชีวิตประจำวันทั้งอดีตและปัจจุบันในการกำหนดแก่นเรื่อง (theme) จากนั้นผู้วิจัยจึงสร้างบทละครเรื่อง ใครในบ้าน โดยแบ่งตัวเรื่องออกเป็นสองเส้นเรื่อง เส้นเรื่องหลักนำเสนอความรักของหญิงรักหญิงในปัจจุบัน ส่วนเส้นเรื่องรองนำเสนอเรื่องราวความรักของหญิงรักหญิงในอดีตที่กลายเป็นโศกนาฎกรรม ซึ่งผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการเชื่อมสองเส้นเรื่องนี้ด้วยสิ่งของสำคัญที่ปรากฎในอดีตและยังคงอยู่มาจนปัจจุบันเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่าปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตนั้นยังคงมีอยู่ แม้ว่าในปัจจุบันปัญหาที่หญิงรักหญิงประสบจะไม่ร้ายแรงเท่าในอดีตแต่อคติที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตนั้นยังไม่หายไปและยังสร้างความหวาดกลัวให้กับผู้ที่เป็นหญิงรักหญิงอยู่ บทละครเรื่องนี้ได้ถูกนำไปจัดแสดงและเก็บข้อมูลผู้ชมผ่านแบบสอบถาม ผลการศึกษาพบว่า บทละครสามารถสื่อสารประเด็นความรักของหญิงรักหญิงและอคติทางเพศกับผู้ชมได้ แต่สัญญะความเป็น ‘ผี’ ที่ผู้วิจัยต้องการสื่อสารถึงอคติทางเพศนั้นยังไม่สามารถสื่อถึงผู้ชมได้อย่างชัดเจน อันเนื่องมาจากกลวิธีในการสื่อสารบทสนทนาต่าง ๆ ผ่านตัวละครนั้น ผู้วิจัยยังนำเสนอด้วยน้ำเสียงที่ประนีประนอมเกินไป ตัวละครเอกของเรื่องควรเจอสภาวะเจ็บปวดมากกว่านี้เพื่อสื่อเรื่องของอคติทางเพศซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่จริงจังและเจ็บปวดของหญิงรักหญิง และองค์ประกอบศิลป์เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญอย่างมากในการช่วยนำเสนอความเป็นกอธิกและช่วยให้ประเด็นที่ต้องการนำเสนอชัดเจนขึ้น
