This thesis outlines the raw phenomenon of humans to exist in relation to each other as “passersby,” unaware of their tendencies towards desire and lack, when they should pursue “sonder,” the awareness that someone else’s life is as equally complex as your own. Relationality looks like a performance of bodies when it should embody the essence of dance. The performance of bodies equates to the purpose of passersby to prioritize movement as a way to remain unattentive of personhood. This essay uses the theoretical lens of queer performance theory to analyze L.B. Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). I first contextualize existing literature about sexual assault and the limited research about feminine men regarding sexual violence and assault. Then, I examine the components of queer performance theory, positing a metaphorical equation of combining both queer theory and performance theory to further understand the roots of queer performance theory. Near the beginning of the book of Genesis, the Eden narrative provides a lens to culturally significant elements of early Hebrew culture. Genesis illustrates early Hebrew culture’s relationship with the natural world, sex, sin, judgment, and death. Similarly, John Milton’s retelling of the narrative in Paradise Lost divulges information about the culture that Milton lived in, as well as a great deal about the author himself. Through the lens of climate change and erosion, this research unveils the lasting effects of severe and traumatic weather patterns on the psychology and physiology of those who continue to endure them. This study aimed to identify the nature of instructional differences between beginning, intermediate and advanced contemporary dance classes. The study involved interviewing two dance instructors and observing their classes, as well as conducting focus group discussions to gain insight from students. Despite difficulties in comparing across three levels given that no single instructor was observed teaching all three levels, the mixed method comparison yielded some common themes at each dance level. Given that students at higher levels were more aware of and comfortable with their bodies, instructors moved through the class at a quicker pace. Students at each level were …

Theatre is more than watching actors in the present. It can bring a magic into the room that connects us to a tangible ride of emotions. Sea shanties, a widely known variety of maritime singing, is purposely meant to bring its singers together. I wrote and directed an original one-act play structured around its repetitive beats, to create a communal feeling that will deem a sea of strangers a community for that day. This paper looks specifically at Memphis jookin, New Orleans jiggin, Washington DC’s beat ya feet and New York City’s litefeet. It explores common characteristics and regional differences in each dance, connecting them to older African and African-American dance aesthetics. Emphasizing shared cultural heritage, this paper argues that these dances form a singular body of work that is directly connected to African-American dance traditions developed during and after enslavement. In addition, it argues that these dances are important cultural institutions and act to preserve specifical African-American socio-cultural practices.

This practice as research presents a case study of leadership in interdisciplinary settings, considering choreographic collaboration within technology, visual art, music and dance, alongside models used in teaching dance. I define leadership as influencing others to act towards a shared intention by holding space for psychological safety and peak performance. I synthesise leadership models relevant to my practice in a figurative ‘tree of transformation’, illustrating how Jim Collins’ Level 5 leadership, Robert K. Greenleaf’s servant leadership and C. Otto Scharmer’s Theory U model branch out from transformational leadership.

Dance in art can be seen in paintings created by artists such as Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Pierre Auguste-Renoir (1841-1919), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), William Blake (1757-1827), John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist artist who was known for his work of arts featuring ballerinas. Pierre Auguste-Renoir was also a French Impressionist artist like Degas, but he was more so known for his real-life scenario paintings. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, a French artist was known for his Art Nouveau and Post-Impressionist style. Toulouse-Lautrec illustrated some posters and paintings on Moulin Rouge. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและสังเคราะห์กระบวนการฝึกฝนการใช้จินตนาการในการแสดงที่จะสามารถนำไปพัฒนาและสร้างตัวละคร เอ็มม่า ในละครเพลงเรื่อง เทล มี ออน อะ ซันเดย์ (Tell Me on a Sunday) อีกทั้งเพื่อฝึกฝนและพัฒนาทักษะการร้องเพลงเพื่อนำเสนอตัวละคร เอ็มม่า ผ่านบทละครเพลงดังกล่าว โดยผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาทฤษฎีการแสดง และฝึกซ้อมการแสดงควบคู่กับการฝึกฝนแบบฝึกหัดทางด้านการแสดงเพื่อนำไปพัฒนาและสร้างตัวละคร เอ็มม่า ซึ่งความท้าทายของละครเพลงข้างต้นคือ จะมีเพียง 1 ตัวละคร ที่นำเสนอเรื่องราวบนเวที โดยมีการพูดคุยกับตัวละครอื่นที่ไม่ปรากฏบนเวที ดังนั้นนักแสดงจึงต้องใช้จินตนาการในการแสดงอย่างมากเพื่อทำให้ผู้ชมเกิดความรู้สึกร่วม และเข้าใจว่ากำลังเกิดอะไรขึ้น วิธีการหลักที่ถูกใช้ในการพัฒนาและสร้างตัวละครในงานวิจัยนี้คือมนต์สมมติ (Magic If) โดยคอนสแตนติน สตานิสลาฟสกี (Constantin Stanislavski) ควบคู่ไปกับทฤษฎีการแสดงเกี่ยวกับการใช้จินตนาการ (Imagination) ของ สเตลลา แอดเลอร์ (Stella Adler) ผู้วิจัยได้เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการจดบันทึก การบันทึกวิดีโอการฝึกซ้อมและการแสดง ซึ่งมีการประเมินผลหลังจากนำเสนอผลงานการแสดงแล้วโดยการเก็บรวบรวมแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชมทั้งหมด 50 ชุด การประเมินการแสดงจากอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษาในรอบก่อนการแสดงจริง และมีการวิเคราะห์จากการพูดคุยจากการเสวนากับผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิหลังจบการแสดง กระบวนที่สังเคราะห์ได้คือการฝึกฝนตามลำดับดังนี้ Magic If, Given Circumstances, Super Objective และการใช้แบบฝึกหัดเข้ามาช่วยพัฒนาระหว่างการฝึกซ้อม ซึ่งผลจากการฝึกฝนตามกระบวนการที่ได้มาทำให้ผู้วิจัยสามารถทำให้ผู้ชมเชื่อในสถานการณ์ของตัวละครได้ ผู้ชมเกิดความรู้สึกร่วมไปกับเหตุการณ์ที่ตัวละครกำลังประสบอยู่ และเห็นพัฒนาการของการเปลี่ยนแปลงของตัวละครเอ็มม่า ในส่วนของผลของการฝึกฝนการร้องเพลงคือผู้วิจัยเกิดความมั่นใจในการร้องเพลงเพื่อที่จะสื่อสารเรื่องราวของตัวละครสู่ผู้ชมมากขึ้น และผู้วิจัยไม่เกิดความกังวลขณะที่กำลังแสดงอยู่เนื่องจากการฝึกฝนอย่างสม่ำเสมอก่อนการแสดงจริง

วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้ที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับกระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องเพลงลูกกรุง โดยใช้หลักการและแบบฝึกหัดลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์มาปรับใช้สำหรับการสอน โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์คือเพื่อค้นหาแนวทางการสอนการแสดงและแบบฝึกหัดทางการแสดงที่เหมาะสมในการถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลงสำหรับนักร้อง และเพื่อให้ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษากระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องอย่างลึกซึ้ง ซึ่งในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ดำเนินการในฐานะครูสอนการแสดง และได้เลือกศึกษากับผู้เข้ารับวิจัยจำนวน 5 คน โดยมีคุณสมบัติดังต่อไปนี้ 1) เป็นบุคคลกลุ่มเพศใดก็ได้ 2) เป็นผู้ที่มีอายุ 18 ปีขึ้นไป 3) เป็นผู้ที่มีพื้นฐานการร้องเพลงอยู่แล้ว 4) เป็นผู้ที่ต้องการพัฒนาศักยภาพของตนเองในด้านถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลง ผู้วิจัยได้ออกแบบแผนการสอนที่เน้นใช้แบบฝึกหัดของลี สตราสเบิร์ก และแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้ฝึกไว้เป็นหลัก ซึ่งมีระยะเวลาการสอนทั้งหมดจำนวน 12 ครั้ง ครั้งละ 3 ชั่วโมง และเมื่อผู้เข้ารับวิจัยเรียนครบตลอดแผนการสอนแล้วจึงได้จัดคอนเสิร์ตประกอบวิทยานิพนธ์เพื่อแสดงต่อหน้าผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิเพื่อนำข้อเสนอแนะรวมถึงแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชมมาประเมินผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแบบฝึกหัดและหลักการของทั้งลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ ที่ผู้วิจัยนำสอนสามารถใช้พัฒนาผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้เป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่าหลักการของลีสตราสเบิร์กในเรื่องของการสร้างความจริงจากภายในโดยใช้จิตนาการแห่งการรื้อฟื้นความทรงจำในอดีตนั้น สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับการวิจัยสามารถถ่ายทอดและสื่อสารความรู้สึกออกมาได้อย่างจริงใจได้จริง รวมถึงแบบฝึกหัดการพูดซ้ำ (Repetition) ในหลักการของแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ที่เน้นให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับมีสติปัจจุบันขณะแม้อยู่ภายใต้สถานการณ์สมมตินั้นก็สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะ (Moment) ได้เป็นอย่างดี แต่ทั้งนี้ฝึกฝนอย่างสม่ำเสมอเพื่อรักษาเสถียรภาพการอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะให้มั่นคงจนสามารถนำสามารถมาใช้ได้เป็นเองโดยอัตโนมัติ การทำวิจัยครั้งนี้ทำให้ผู้วิจัยค้นพบการที่จะช่วยให้ผู้เรียนพัฒนาได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดนั้นแบบฝึกหัดอย่างเดียวอาจจะไม่พอ จะต้องขึ้นอยู่กับความตั้งใจของผู้เรียนเองเพราะพลังแห่งความตั้งใจนี้จะส่งผลให้ผู้เรียนไม่ทำอะไรอย่างครึ่งๆ กลางๆ และสามารถพัฒนาตนเองได้อย่างก้าวกระโดด อีกประการหนึ่งคือทักษะด้านการร้องเพลงของผู้เรียนเอง ผู้เรียนควรมีทักษะการร้องที่ดีอยู่แล้วจึงจะต่อยอดทักษะทางด้านนี้ต่อไปได้ เพราะหากยังพะวงเกี่ยวกับการร้องเพลงของตนเองอยู่ จะส่งผลทำให้เกิดภาวะที่เรียกว่าสมาธิผิดที่ได้โดยง่าย นอกจากนี้ครูผู้สอนจำเป็นจะต้องมีความรู้ทางด้านการแสดงที่แม่นยำเพื่อที่จะได้ฝึกผู้เรียนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพอันนำไปสู่การพัฒนาอย่างสูงสุด

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติและศึกษาแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ โดยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงทดลองประกอบด้วยการค้นคว้าเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์ และการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าประเทศไทยส่งตัวแทนเข้าประกวดนางงามจักรวาลครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2497 และเข้าร่วมรายการมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งมีการประกวดรอบชุดประจำชาติ ที่ผ่านมาการสร้างสรรค์ท่าทางลีลานาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ 1) นางงามและบุคคลใกล้ชิดเตรียมท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยเพื่อใช้ในการประกวด 2) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยส่งนางงามเข้าฝึกหัดท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อสร้างคลังท่าหรือโครงสร้างของท่าและกระบวนท่าสำหรับให้นางงามเลือกใช้เมื่อถึงการประกวด 3) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยจัดหาผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อออกแบบท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยสำหรับการนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ส่วนแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ผู้วิจัยพบว่ามีปัจจัยที่เป็นข้อบังคับจากกองประกวดนางงามจักรวาลและผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยอยู่ 6 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) แนวคิดเครื่องแต่งกาย 2) แนวดนตรีประกอบการประกวดในรอบชุดประจำชาติ 3) ระยะเวลาในการนำเสนอ 30-90 วินาที 4) รูปแบบเวทีการวางตำแหน่งเมื่ออยู่บนเวที และมุมกล้อง 5) คุณสมบัติของนางงาม 6) วิธีการเดินของนางงาม เมื่อรวบรวมข้อมูลเหล่านี้แล้วจึงดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์ลีลาท่าทางโดยเน้นการเดินของนางงามผสานเข้ากับลีลาท่าทางนาฏศิลป์ไทยและการแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกผ่านสีหน้าแววตา โดยคำนึงถึงการส่งเสริมแนวคิดของเครื่องแต่งกายให้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น

This practice-led research investigates the figurative space between writing and dancing through a looped feedback cycle. The project explores the ‘conversation’ between writing and improvisational dance and how it forms a responsive process named dancingwords/wordsthatdance. Conducted in sessions lasting 30 minutes at a time, this project asks: how can writing and dancing intersect to create a broader and clearer understanding of embodied knowledge, improvisation, creative research process and personal practice? Organizing (Eternal) Identity And Identification: An Upward Glance Into Religious Institutions, Casey M. Stratton

This dissertation disrupts at least two religious spaces: First, scholars religiously adhering to (social) scientific norms, and second, people identifying with religious organizations (i.e., churches). First, we begin constructing a theoretical lens using poststructural ideas offered by Foucault, Derrida, and Bakhtin to read and disrupt (religious) discourse. Second, we complicate organizational identification as a concept, deeming it fixed and fluid—a paradox within religious discourses that endorse Truth and Perfection. Here, we draw from the communication constitutes organization (CCO) approach.
