Dance can stand as a social commentary that can improve and progress social and societal development, positively impacting society, widely held views and the world. The research examines shifting gender perceptions in feminist dance practices, delving into how the portrayal of women in contemporary dance performance reflects changes and the lack thereof in societal perceptions of women in the 21st century. The focus of this research is the use of the female body as a tool for developing a feminist performance practice. This research interrogated the use of neo-burlesque and erotic dance in contemporary postdramatic performance. Contemporary feminist performance artists, such as Emma Maye Gibson (aka Betty Grumble), often use the female body as a tool for entertainment and political statement, and this trend parallels an increase of women moving into the burlesque and erotic dance spheres as professional performers and hobbyists. The book describes the historical context for the Scaramouche tragic pantomime created by Poul Knudsen and Jean Sibelius in 1913. The pantomime had numerous productions in various European countries between 1922 and 1977, and the book examines all of them according to all available evidence. The text explains the historical and cultural significance of the pantomime and how it uniquely explores a dark and complex intersection of female sexuality, marriage, and class control of erotic desire. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การตีบทสอพินยาในละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยาในละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศของอาจารย์เสรี หวังในธรรม จำนวน 6 บท ได้แก่ บทโอ้อวด บทข่มขู่ บทโกรธแค้น บทเสียใจ บทฆ่าตัวตาย และบทการต่อสู้ แบบตัวต่อตัวระหว่างสอพินยากับจะเด็ด (อาวุธสั้น) และการต่อสู้แบบ 2 ต่อ 1 ระหว่างสอพินยาและไขลู กับมังตรา (อาวุธยาว) โดยผู้วิจัยศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสารวิชาการที่เกี่ยวข้อง การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วมโดยการฝึกซ้อมการแสดง และไม่มีส่วนร่วมโดยการรับชมการแสดงสดและชมวีดิทัศน์ โดยมุ่งศึกษากลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยาจากรูปแบบและวิธีการปฏิบัติของอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค ผู้เชี่ยวชาญนาฏศิลป์ไทย (โขนยักษ์) วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลป สถาบันบัณฑิตพัฒนศิลป์ กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม ผลการวิจัยพบว่าอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญและมีความสามารถทางด้านการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ไทยทั้งโขนและละคร เคยได้รับบทบาททั้ง ตัวประกอบ พระเอกและตัวโกง สำหรับบทบาทการแสดงที่มีความโดดเด่นที่สุดคือ สอพินยาในการแสดงละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศของอาจารย์เสรี หวังในธรรม เป็นตัวละครจัดอยู่ในประเภทตัวโกงที่มีความหลากหลายทางด้านอารมณ์ บุคลิก อุปนิสัยและพฤติกรรมต่าง ๆ ทำให้สอพินยาเป็นตัวละครที่โดดเด่นตัวหนึ่งในเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศ โดยคุณลักษณะของผู้แสดงต้องเป็นคนที่ใช้น้ำเสียงดัง ฟังชัด สามารถแก้ไขสถานการณ์เฉพาะหน้าในระหว่างการแสดงได้อย่างเรียบเนียน เป็นผู้มีประสบการณ์การแสดงทั้งโขนและละคร เพื่อให้ได้มาของการสวมบทบาทที่ชวนน่าติดตาม ลักษณะพิเศษของอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค ในกลวิธีแสดงบทบาทสอพินยา ผู้วิจัยพบอยู่ 3 ลักษณะเด่นด้วยกันที่เป็นปัจจัยทำให้บทบาทสอพินยาที่แสดงโดยอาจารย์จุลชาติเป็นที่กล่าวขาน คือ 1. การให้ความสำคัญในการปรับบุคลิกของตัวละคร 2. การให้ความสำคัญในบทละคร 3. การให้ความสำคัญในอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของตัวละคร นอกจากนี้พบการใช้ท่ารำประกอบในกลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยามี 3 ประเด็นด้วยกัน คือ 1. การใช้ท่ารำเต็ม หรือท่ามาตรฐาน 2. การใช้ท่ารำเลียนแบบธรรมชาติ 3. การใช้ท่ารำเสริมบท ทั้งนี้ผู้แสดงจะต้องศึกษาความเข้าใจในบทละครอย่างถ่องแท้ถึงจะดูสมจริง จึงจะแสดงในบทบาทสอพินยาได้อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ

The Man from Figueras

Chris Burnside is an artist/choreographer who was inspired to tell stories on stage after seeing performance artist Spalding Gray at an international theater festival in the early 1980s. After retirement and with the encouragement of a lifelong friend, Mr. Burnside started writing some of those stories down, eventually including others. The stories in The Man from Figueras focus on learning experiences, aha moments, and events that have, over the years, changed his perspective and shaped how he has lived his life. The ninety stories are in chronological order and are grouped by the eight decades of his life.

During Labor Day Weekend in New York City, millions of people from all over the world travel to Brooklyn to highlight and celebrate Caribbean-American culture. This capstone project explores the way one dance troupe, Zante, who specializes in traditional dance styles from the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago, fights to preserve their culture by way of sharing it with an outside audience.

This study focuses on highlighting the need for proper training for dance educators faced with teaching classes that include students with exceptional needs. Few dance classes will openly welcome or properly accommodate exceptional learners, which means that these learners are presented with minimal opportunities to participate in this extracurricular activity that promotes self-expression and socialization with their peers. Wanting to create more opportunities for exceptional learners to participate in dance, the researcher sought to find a solution that could be applied to multiple programs or organizations. “Dancing is visceral, but it is more than just physical,” my jazz professor Steven Sofia likes to say. Dancing is an art of multitasking; it’s interdisciplinary in that it is physically, but also mentally overwhelming on a dancer’s conscious mind. Psychologically, dancers can be more efficient in how they approach training, but there’s a lack of prioritizing the conscious connection between mind and body in the dance community.

Anxiety and depression are highly prevalent mental health conditions in children. Rates of both disorders are rising, surpassing the capacity of available treatment services (albertapatients, 2022; Edwardson, 2022; Statistics Canada, 2020). Lack of treatment can often result in worsening of symptoms towards serious long-term effects (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Additional treatment supports must be made available. The goal of this doctoral research is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of genre-inclusive dance as a psychosocial intervention for anxiety and depression in children. The story follows a character named Everybody, who is summoned by Death to embark on a journey to account for their life and choices before God. As Everybody seeks companionship for this final journey, they encounter personifications of abstract concepts like Friendship, Kinship, Stuff, Mind, and Love. Anatomy and Psycho-Physical Centering, will explore two foundations: (1) the start of our research and practical application of the human anatomy in regards to how our body moves; and (2) your ability to tune into movement centers within the body by utilizing Chakra as a guiding study. This capstone project aimed to develop a dance program focused on health promotion, with the intent to encourage physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being. In response to the rise in childhood obesity and associated comorbidities, especially among underserved communities, the goal of this project was to provide opportunities for children of all backgrounds to establish healthy habits and routines.

Keeping Both History And Magic Alive: Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done (2018) At The Museum Of Modern Art, Beatrice M. Johnson

This thesis examines the exhibition, historical reconstruction, and museum acquisition and conservation of postmodern dance, with the 2018 MoMA exhibition Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done as a case study. This exhibition considered the history and legacy of 1960s postmodern dance through a presentation of artifacts and archives alongside a continuous program of live, in-gallery performances. The Work Is Never Done catalyzed questions in the three areas of dance exhibition, reconstruction, and conservation and, as this thesis argues, represents a unique example of preserving canonical dance history while creating a generative context for spontaneity, experimentation, and reinvention.

This study explored the perspectives of dance specialists and gifted and talented resource teachers in a large school district in the southeastern region of the United States. Six educators who teach dance, work in auditioning and identification of gifted and talented dancers, and provide service options for gifted and talented identified dance students were interviewed in this qualitative study which focused on best practices in gifted and talented dance identification. Dance specialists’ perspectives of audition structures and characteristics of dance giftedness were examined.
