Throughout my life as a dancer, I often wondered if body image issues were purely found in Western concert dance (such as ballet and modern dance) and if folk dance instilled a sense of ownership over one’s body. It was apparent to me that being asked to stare at yourself in the mirror for hours on end in a ballet class, or any other dance style, forced you to see every tiny defect in your body. For me personally, this caused a lot of body dysmorphia and body image issues that I carry to this day. While some folk dance …

Researcher Joshua Lang investigates the development of the Eden narrative in western culture. Near the beginning of the book of Genesis, the Eden narrative provides a lens to culturally significant elements of early Hebrew culture. Genesis illustrates early Hebrew culture’s relationship with the natural world, sex, sin, judgment, and death. Similarly, John Milton’s retelling of the narrative in Paradise Lost divulges information about the culture that Milton lived in, as well as a great deal about the author himself. This study aimed to identify the nature of instructional differences between beginning, intermediate and advanced contemporary dance classes. The study involved interviewing two dance instructors and observing their classes, as well as conducting focus group discussions to gain insight from students. Despite difficulties in comparing across three levels given that no single instructor was observed teaching all three levels, the mixed method comparison yielded some common themes at each dance level. Given that students at higher levels were more aware of and comfortable with their bodies, instructors moved through the class at a quicker pace. Students at each level were …

This paper looks specifically at Memphis jookin, New Orleans jiggin, Washington DC’s beat ya feet and New York City’s litefeet. It explores common characteristics and regional differences in each dance, connecting them to older African and African-American dance aesthetics. Emphasizing shared cultural heritage, this paper argues that these dances form a singular body of work that is directly connected to African-American dance traditions developed during and after enslavement. In addition, it argues that these dances are important cultural institutions and act to preserve specifical African-American socio-cultural practices.

Dance in art can be seen in paintings created by artists such as Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Pierre Auguste-Renoir (1841-1919), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), William Blake (1757-1827), John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist artist who was known for his work of arts featuring ballerinas. Pierre Auguste-Renoir was also a French Impressionist artist like Degas, but he was more so known for his real-life scenario paintings. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติและศึกษาแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ โดยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงทดลองประกอบด้วยการค้นคว้าเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์ และการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าประเทศไทยส่งตัวแทนเข้าประกวดนางงามจักรวาลครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2497 และเข้าร่วมรายการมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งมีการประกวดรอบชุดประจำชาติ ที่ผ่านมาการสร้างสรรค์ท่าทางลีลานาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ 1) นางงามและบุคคลใกล้ชิดเตรียมท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยเพื่อใช้ในการประกวด 2) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยส่งนางงามเข้าฝึกหัดท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อสร้างคลังท่าหรือโครงสร้างของท่าและกระบวนท่าสำหรับให้นางงามเลือกใช้เมื่อถึงการประกวด 3) กองประกวดผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยจัดหาผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อออกแบบท่าทางลีลานาฏศิลป์ไทยสำหรับการนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ส่วนแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏกรรมไทยเพื่อนำเสนอเครื่องแต่งกายประจำชาติ ผู้วิจัยพบว่ามีปัจจัยที่เป็นข้อบังคับจากกองประกวดนางงามจักรวาลและผู้ถือลิขสิทธิ์ของประเทศไทยอยู่ 6 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) แนวคิดเครื่องแต่งกาย 2) แนวดนตรีประกอบการประกวดในรอบชุดประจำชาติ 3) ระยะเวลาในการนำเสนอ 30-90 วินาที 4) รูปแบบเวทีการวางตำแหน่งเมื่ออยู่บนเวที และมุมกล้อง 5) คุณสมบัติของนางงาม 6) วิธีการเดินของนางงาม เมื่อรวบรวมข้อมูลเหล่านี้แล้วจึงดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์ลีลาท่าทางโดยเน้นการเดินของนางงามผสานเข้ากับลีลาท่าทางนาฏศิลป์ไทยและการแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกผ่านสีหน้าแววตา โดยคำนึงถึงการส่งเสริมแนวคิดของเครื่องแต่งกายให้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น

My experience as a dance maker is rooted in the following: use of space, interpersonal relationships, efforts in dynamics, psychology, and personal memory, all of which inform my thesis project. This thesis project specifically investigates the stages of psychosocial development as seen through the theories of psychologist Erik Erikson. It explores the emotional effect of these psychosocial stages on people, including conflicts and positive impacts. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรในบทละครเรื่องพระอภัยมณี ของกรมศิลปากร มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการสวมบทบาทนางยักษ์ผีเสื้อสมุทรฉบับกรมศิลปากร โดยมีการศึกษาจากเอกสารวิชาการ การสัมภาษณ์ การทดลองแบบมีส่วนร่วมและไม่มีส่วนร่วม การรับชมการฝึกซ้อมและการรับชมการแสดง โดยมุ่งเน้นศึกษากลวิธีการสวมบทบาทเป็นนางผีเสื้อสมุทรในบทละครเรื่องพระอภัยมณีตอนเพลงปี่พิศวาสถึงเพลงปี่พิฆาต โดยศึกษารูปแบบและวิธีการปฏิบัติของ อาจารย์ธานิต ศาลากิจ ข้าราชการบำนาญ สำนักการสังคีต กรมศิลปากร ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลวิธีปัจจัยสำคัญสำหรับการสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรนั้นมี 3 ประเด็นด้วยกันคือ 1. คุณลักษณะของผู้แสดงที่จะต้องมี เสียง ระดับกลาง เสียงไม่ทุ้มหรือแหลมจนเกินไปพูดชัดถ้อยชัดคำ ฉะฉาน ปฏิภาณไหวพริบที่ดีในการแก้ไขสถานการณ์เนื่องจากบทละครระบุให้มีเจรจารับส่งมุกตลกและใช้เพื่อดำเนินเรื่อง ฝีมือการรำที่สวยงาม มีจริตของตัวนางผสมนางยักษ์ วงและเหลี่ยมมีขนาดย่อมกว่ายักษ์ชาย การกระทบจังหวะหนักแน่น มีการก้าวข้างลงเหลี่ยมหลบเข่า กดเกลียวข้าง การชี้นิ้วมือ และรูปร่างใหญ่แต่สันทัด ส่วนสูง 160-165 เซนติเมตร โดยประมาณ 2. ผู้แสดงจะต้องมีขั้นตอนการสวมบทบาท โดยให้ความสำคัญกับการตีความบทละครอย่างละเอียดทุกคำ ทุกบรรทัด วิเคราะห์เพื่อประกอบสร้างนางผีเสื้อสมุทรให้เกิดความสมจริงตามบทละคร ขั้นตอนการสมมติบทบาทของผู้แสดงเป็นนางผีเสื้อสมุทรที่ผู้แสดงสร้างขึ้น การมุ่งเน้นอารมณ์เป็นหลักในการแสดงเพื่อถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกออกมาให้ได้อย่างเต็มที่ และการฝึกฝนจนก่อให้เกิดความชำนาญ 3. การแสดง ผู้แสดงจะต้องทำความเข้าใจวิธีการถ่ายทอด ตัวละครนางผีเสื้อสมุทรที่ผู้แสดงได้ประกอบสร้างไว้ ในรูปแบบของนาฏกรรมที่ใช้แสดง โดยประกอบไปด้วย ท่ารำในการตีบทแบบมีคำร้อง ท่ารำกาแสดงขยายความรู้สึก (แบบไม่มีคำร้อง) เพลงหน้าพาทย์ การเจรจาตามบท การแสดงขยายความรู้สึก (เจรจาแทรกบท) สามารถแสดงอารมณ์ได้หลากหลาย ฉับไวในการสร้างอารมณ์และพลิกแพลงอารมณ์ แยกแยะระดับของอารมณ์ตามความสัมพันธ์ของแต่ละตัวละครได้และสถานการณ์ การใช้อุปกรณ์ และการใช้พื้นที่เวที ผู้แสดงจึงต้องมีความเข้าใจและหมั่นฝึกฝนกลวิธีดังกล่าวนี้จนเกิดความชำนาญ จึงจะสามารถสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรออกมาได้อย่างแยบยล

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ศึกษาเรื่องพัฒนาการของกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกของคณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทย โดยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพัฒนาการของแนวความคิดและกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกไทยของคณะบ้านตุ๊กตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทย ศึกษาจากการแสดงของคณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทยตั้งแต่ ปีพ.ศ. 2552 - 2564 และยังมีการศึกษาด้วยวิธีการสืบค้นข้อมูลจาก หนังสือ เอกสาร งานวิจัยต่างๆ การสัมภาษณ์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับ คณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทย การลงพื้นที่สังเกตการณ์การแสดง ผู้วิจัยมุ่งศึกษาคณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทยซึ่งก่อตั้งโดย อาจารย์ ดร. นิเวศ แววสมณะ ในปี พ.ศ 2540 เป็นคณะหุ่นกระบอกที่มีความหลากหลายในด้านของงานการแสดง และด้านองค์ประกอบของการแสดง ในระยะเวลา 13 ปี ตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2552 - 2564 คณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทย มีการแสดงทั้งหมด 19 เรื่อง ผู้วิจัยได้แบ่งแนวคิดการแสดงเป็น 2 ส่วน คือ 1.การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกไทยโดยการนำเรื่องมาจากวรรณคดีและวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่น 2.การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกโดยการนำเรื่องมาจากเนื้อหาที่ถูกแต่งขึ้นใหม่ การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกของคณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทยนั้นมิได้มีเพียงการแสดง หุ่นกระบอกไทยแบบดั้งเดิมเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่ยังมีการพัฒนารูปแบบของการแสดง เนื้อเรื่อง รวมถึง ตัวหุ่นกระบอกให้มีความหลากหลาย และดึงดูดผู้ชมได้ ทำให้คณะบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่นหุ่นกระบอกไทย โดยอาจารย์ ดร.นิเวศ แววสมณะได้รับรางวัลต่างๆ มากมาย ได้แก่ 1. รางวัลศิลปินผู้อนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมดีเด่น กรุงเทพมหานคร สมาคมโรตารี่แห่งประเทศไทย 2550 2. รางวัลศิลปินวัฒนคุณาธร กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม 2555 3. รางวัลดีเด่นด้านการอนุรักษ์ ฟื้นฟูมรดกภูมิปัญญาทางวัฒนธรรม กรมส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรม กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม 2558 4. รางวัลศิลปินผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมดีเด่น กรุงเทพมหานคร สมาคมโรตารี่แห่งประเทศไทย 2559 5. รางวัล Mention Award การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกไทยเรื่องพระเนมิราช งานเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ 2560 6. รางวัลครูช่างศิลปหัตกรรม โดยกรมส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพระหว่างประเทศ 2561 7. รางวัลผู้อนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมยอดเยี่ยมโดยกรมส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรม ประจำปี 2561 8. รางวัล Silver awards & The Best beautiful costume puppet งานเทศกาลหุ่นนานาชาติฮานอย …

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ไทยในรูปแบบกีฬาลีลาศฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ไทยในกีฬาลีลาศ เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยใช้วิธีการค้นคว้าทางเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วม และการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางนาฏยศิลป์ กีฬาลีลาศมีทั้งความเป็นศิลปะและเป็นกีฬาอยู่ในศาสตร์เดียวกัน ผู้วิจัยได้รับแรงบันดาลใจในการสร้างสรรค์ลีลาศที่มีการนำนาฏยศิลป์ไทยมาใช้ในการออกแบบ ได้แก่ จังหวะตะลุง จึงได้ทำการทดลองสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ไทยในกีฬาลีลาศจำนวน 2 ประเภท โดยใช้การฟ้อนแบบนีโอล้านนาที่มีลักษณะการรำที่ช้าในจังหวะวอลซ์ เกิดขึ้นเป็น “ล้านนาวอลซ์” และ การเซิ้งทางภาคอีสานของไทยที่มีลักษณะการรำที่เร็วในจังหวะแซมบ้า เกิดขึ้นเป็น “ภูไทแซมบ้า กระบวนการออกแบบสร้างสรรค์ประกอบด้วยองค์ประกอบ 5 ส่วน ได้แก่ 1. แนวคิด 2. เพลงประกอบ 3. การออกแบบท่าเต้น 4. การออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย และ 5. การนำเสนอผลการสร้างสรรค์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า แนวทางการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์ไทยในกีฬาลีลาศคือ การใช้ลักษณะเด่นของนาฏยศิลป์ไทยได้แก่ การจีบ การตั้งวง และการกดเกลียวข้าง มาใช้กับส่วนบนของร่างกาย ส่วนการใช้เท้าและการใช้พื้นที่เป็นไปตามแบบลีลาศ ทั้งการฟ้อนแบบนีโอล้านนาและการเซิ้งทางภาคอีสานของไทย เหมาะสำหรับการออกแบบส่วนบนของร่างกาย การเต้นของวอลซ์และแซมบ้ามีลักษณะการใช้เท้าและขาเหมาะสำหรับการสร้างสรรค์ส่วนล่าง โดยผู้วิจัยเห็นว่ามีความเป็นไปได้ในการนำนาฏยศิลป์ไทยมาออกแบบสร้างสรรค์ในรูปแบบกีฬาลีลาศ และยังสามารถพัฒนาต่อไปได้อีก

Kanami Kusajima is an ink dancer and street performer who dances and creates art at Washington Square Park. She’s also been clashing with the Park Enforcement Patrol officers, who patrol the area. Her attempts to create a safer space for her fellow performers brings to light the complicated rules and regulations as well as the obstacles street performers face on the daily. In music, the word “tempo” refers to the speed or pace of the music (the number of beats per minute, for example). Tempo is surprisingly subjective, given that beat perception depends on age and cultural experience. Other factors besides beat (like the density of events per unit time) might influence how fast or slow people dance to music. Certain styles of music afford different speeds of dance, even when their tempos are the same.
