La Parole Traditionnelle Dans Le Pagne Noir De Bernard Dadié Ou Le Passage De L’Oralité À La Scripturalité Du Conte, Koffi P. Amanoua 2015 University of Louisiana at Lafayette

La Parole Traditionnelle Dans Le Pagne Noir De Bernard Dadié Ou Le Passage De L’Oralité À La Scripturalité Du Conte, Koffi P. Amanoua

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Force-Bonte : Un Oubli Volontaire Non Justifie, Myrlene Bruno

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

La Metaphore Du Devoilement Dans Les Enfants Du Nouveau Monde D’Assia Djebar, Amina Saidou 2015 University of Louisiana at Lafayette

La Metaphore Du Devoilement Dans Les Enfants Du Nouveau Monde D’Assia Djebar, Amina Saidou

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Crossing Cultures: The Old Norse Adaptations Of Marie De France’S Lais, Kenna Jacobs 2015 University of Connecticut - Storrs

Crossing Cultures: The Old Norse Adaptations Of Marie De France’S Lais, Kenna Jacobs

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

The representation of sin and sexuality in Marie de France’s Lais is a topic that continues to be debated among scholars, as the unexpected storylines – including adultery, bestiality, and physical violence – often clash with our preconceived notions concerning the medieval principles of modesty and restraint. The provoking, even disconcerting, nature of this work becomes quite apparent when examined in conjunction with their later adaptations in the thirteenth century, as King Hákon of Norway commissioned the translation of several lais into Old Norse as a means of promoting the courtly codes and conventions within French literature. Focusing on the …

Empathic Encounters: Negotiating Identity In 9/11 Fiction And Translation, Kirsty A. Hemsworth 2015 University of Sheffield

Empathic Encounters: Negotiating Identity In 9/11 Fiction And Translation, Kirsty A. Hemsworth

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

Dominated by the polarized strategies of domestication and foreignization, conventional literary translation approaches tend to operate on the assumption that source and target cultures, and, by extension, their literary works, are fundamentally irreconcilable on the basis of linguistic, stylistic and ideological differences. Dislocated by the traumatic force of the event, only to be further uprooted by the translation process itself, the identities at stake in American works of 9/11 fiction cannot be so clearly differentiated and securely defined. Moreover, any attempt to fictionalize and translate this real-world trauma inevitably encounters the event as a visual singularity, whereby the image supersedes …

Melancholic Mirages: Jules Verne's Vision Of A Saharan Sea, Peter Schulman 2015 Old Dominion University

Melancholic Mirages: Jules Verne's Vision Of A Saharan Sea, Peter Schulman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

L’invasion de la mer (The Invasion of the Sea), Verne’s last novel to be published during his lifetime, would appear to be a paradoxical vision of French colonial involvement as it chronicles the attempts of the French army occupying Tunisia and Algeria to capture Tuareg leaders bent on pushing the French out of the Maghreb on the one hand, and thwarting an environmentally disastrous French project on the other. L’Invasion de la mer (The Invasion of the Sea) is a complex, if not melancholic vision of the limits of French expansionism, however. The real-life French army geographer François-Elie Roudaire and …

Nihilism And Dystopian Morality In The Marquis De Sade’S Justine, Jennifer Hill 2015 Georgia College & State University

Nihilism And Dystopian Morality In The Marquis De Sade’S Justine, Jennifer Hill

The Corinthian

What does not conform draws attention. For this reason the work of the Marquis de Sade has long held the world’s attention by excluding any sense of being bound by convention. His characters follow no religion, no moral code, and no law but their own pleasure—especially when it involves violence. The characters of Sade’s twisted literary world, and Sade himself as a historical figure, seem to have a blatant disregard for all propriety, whether seen through its original 18th century context or that of today. This contempt for the conventional, or indeed everything, has led certain scholars to suggest that …

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu 2015 Wilfrid Laurier University

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Le Mouvement Des Harraga — Un Traumatisme Historique Et Politique Qui Dévoile La Face Cachée De L’Europe, Simona Pruteanu 2015 Wilfrid Laurier University

Le Mouvement Des Harraga — Un Traumatisme Historique Et Politique Qui Dévoile La Face Cachée De L’Europe, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Discrimination Towards Algerian-French Citizens In Post-Colonial French Cinema, Jessica Bou-Anak 2015 John Carroll University

Discrimination Towards Algerian-French Citizens In Post-Colonial French Cinema, Jessica Bou-Anak

Senior Honors Projects

Three French films, Elise ou la vraie vie by Michel Drach, La Haine by Matthiew Kassovitz, and The French Democracy by Alex Chan, were analyzed in order to view the discrimination by Caucasian-French citizens towards Algerian-French citizens. The films were released in the aftermath of a significant event in France dealing with racism. Two main themes were prevalent throughout this analysis: discrimination by Caucasian-French citizens towards Algerian-French citizens in public spaces, and Caucasian-French police brutality against Algerian-French youths. The findings from this analysis suggest that discrimination and racism in France still persist today, although in different forms.
