Douglas’S Palyce Of Honour Re-Edited, P. J. Klemp 2019 University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh

Douglas’S Palyce Of Honour Re-Edited, P. J. Klemp

Studies in Scottish Literature

Review of: David J. Parkinson, ed. Gavin Douglas: “The Palyce of Honour.” 2nd edition. Kalamazoo, MI: Published for TEAMS (Teaching Association for Medieval Studies) in Association with the University of Rochester by Medieval Institute Publications, 2018. Judging the volume an "impressive accomplishment," the review draws attention to Parkinson's much expanded introduction, which provides both "first-rate literary criticism" and "a comprehensive study of Douglas’s biography and the Palyce’s textual issues, language, and participation in the genre of the dream vision."

Understanding Supremacist Thought In The U.S.: Confronting The Cultural Underpinnings Of Hierarchical Thought, Timothy R. Libretti 2019 Northern Illinois University

Understanding Supremacist Thought In The U.S.: Confronting The Cultural Underpinnings Of Hierarchical Thought, Timothy R. Libretti

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

This paper finally wants to suggest that the ideologies that sustain class society may be best understood as sharing much with what we might call supremacist thought more generally, which I identify as a powerful tendency in U.S. history and culture. Recognizing the continuities among white supremacist thought, patriarchal ideology, and the capitalist class ideologies, I argue, offers important insights into how class society works and, perhaps more importantly, a possibility for creating a shared understanding or bridge between the white working class and working-class people of color, as well as women. The vice-president of the confederacy argued that the …

"Blue," "Tapestry," And Oil: Rethinking Oil Capitalism And Feminism Through Two Key 1970s Singer-Songwriter Albums, Joshua Friedberg 2019 Northeastern Illinois University

"Blue," "Tapestry," And Oil: Rethinking Oil Capitalism And Feminism Through Two Key 1970s Singer-Songwriter Albums, Joshua Friedberg

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

This project generally argues that oil capitalism has enabled new forms of feminism in music, in addition to its more well-known environmental devastation. It examines two key 1970s singer- songwriter albums, both recorded in Los Angeles and released in 1971, through the lens of what is called "petroculture." Oil is everywhere in popular culture, especially with the ever- presence of automobiles in film and television, and contemporary Cultural Studies scholarship is starting to recognize its importance in popular culture and literature since oil was first discovered in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. However, while oil capitalism has clearly had …

Calling All Corpses: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Dead In Old English Literature, Jessica Troy 2019 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Calling All Corpses: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Dead In Old English Literature, Jessica Troy

English Language and Literature ETDs

The care and disposal of the dead bodies, an unavoidable reminder of one’s mortality, rarely receives in-depth literary attention. In early medieval England, the Anglo-Saxons dealt with corpses but seldom discussed the undertaking in written documents. Instead they focused on the grandiose deeds of heroes like Beowulf and the holy lives of revered saints.

This dissertation examines various genres of Old English literature to identify times when authors discuss corpses and to what end these discussions led. Hagiographers, for example, describe the corpses of certain saints such as Æthelthryth and Edmund at length while the bodies of other saints are …

Multilingual Tutors' Experiences And Practices In Online Sessions, Petra Jurova 2019 Nova Southeastern University

Multilingual Tutors' Experiences And Practices In Online Sessions, Petra Jurova

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

This thesis explores multilingual tutors’ diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and examines how those elements affect their tutoring practices in online sessions. While previous scholarship has examined multilingual student experiences, direct experiences of online multilingual tutors are relatively unexplored. For this study, four tutors were interviewed. The interviews revealed that tutors perceive their multilingualism as a strength in how they relate to multilingual students and their writing while also experiencing challenges related to assumptions made about their linguistic abilities. In online sessions, clarity and purposeful communication is key and multilingual tutors communicate clearly, often code-switching, which enhances understanding, efficiency, and …

Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce 2019 Polytechnic University of the Philippines

Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce

English Faculty Publications

This paper investigated the overall experience of learners with e-literature (e-lit). E-lit as a new form of economy in the field of literature and humanities prompted authors and scholars to create newborn sites of learning — videograph fiction, kinetic poetry, text tula (hyperpoem), and hyperfiction. Thus, the digitization of resource materials in literature led the researchers to investigate the outer circle of some of these new born sites by focusing on the following: readers and their experiences on understanding and learning through e-lit; textual which is concerned with performance and complexities of using this new form of literature; and cultural …
