Balancing Privacy And Access In Personal Digital Archives, Virginia A. Dressler 2019 Kent State University

Balancing Privacy And Access In Personal Digital Archives, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

The session will address privacy concerns to consider within personal digital archives, particularly when access to information from the item or collection is openly available. Privacy is often an elusive term, difficult to pin down and collectively define. And perhaps even more difficult to use and apply as a working standard or ethical value to uphold within a project.
The session will outline types of private information that may be more readily apparent, such as personally identifiable information (social security number, medical information, etc.), as well as that which may be less obvious or inconspicuous in nature. The impact of …

The Visibility Of Authority Records, Researcher Identifiers, Academic Social Networking Profiles, And Related Faculty Publications In Search Engine Results, Rebecca B. French, Jody Condit Fagan 2019 James Madison University

The Visibility Of Authority Records, Researcher Identifiers, Academic Social Networking Profiles, And Related Faculty Publications In Search Engine Results, Rebecca B. French, Jody Condit Fagan

Rebecca B. French

Information about faculty and their publications can be found in library databases such as the Library of Congress Name Authority File, VIAF, WorldCat, and institutional repositories; in identifier registries like ORCID and ISNI; and on academic social networking sites like Academia, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate, but the way search engines use such identifiers and profiles is unclear. Therefore, researchers at a large comprehensive university conducted several rounds of web searching before and after the creation and modification of faculty authority records. The sample consisted of 24 faculty and the 35 publications associated with their authorities. The researchers searched for the …

Partnering For Social Justice: Social Work Students’ Placement At Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson 2019 CUNY Hunter College

Partnering For Social Justice: Social Work Students’ Placement At Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians is garnering much deserved attention, literature about social work students partnering with public libraries is virtually nonexistent. Public librarians can advocate for social justice by initiating partnerships with master-level social work (MSW) students to enhance small- and large-scale programs to address the unique needs of patrons. In this chapter, I highlight existing collaborations among public libraries and student social workers to raise awareness of possibilities.

Sensitive Research, Practice And Design In Hci, Stevie Chancellor, Nazanin Andalibi, Lindsay Blackwell, David Nemer, Wendy Moncur

Information Science Faculty Publications

New research areas in HCI examine complex and sensitive research areas, such as crisis, life transitions, and mental health. Further, research in complex topics such as harassment and graphic content can leave researchers vulnerable to emotional and physical harm. There is a need to bring researchers together to discuss challenges across sensitive research spaces and environments. We propose a workshop to explore the methodological, ethical, and emotional challenges of sensitive research in HCI. We will actively recruit from diverse research environments (industry, academia, government, etc.) and methods areas (qualitative, quantitative, design practices, etc.) and identify commonalities in and encourage relationship-building …

Marketing Book Collections: Creating Digital Displays Using Alma Analytics, Travis Clamon 2019 East Tennessee State University

Marketing Book Collections: Creating Digital Displays Using Alma Analytics, Travis Clamon

ETSU Faculty Works

Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year. Instead of waiting for patrons to find these new titles in Primo, East Tennessee State University decided to develop automated book sliders using data from Alma Analytics. These sliders are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This presentation will give participants a high-level overview of our workflow and the tools we used. I'll first go over Alma Analytics, defining collection scopes and required fields. Next, I'll cover our process of retrieving the data via API and formatting the data into a JSON array. …

This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Using Redcap To Collect Library Service Statistics In A Large Health System, Carrie Grinstead 2019 Providence St. Joseph Health

Using Redcap To Collect Library Service Statistics In A Large Health System, Carrie Grinstead

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background: In January 2018, library services at Providence Health/Swedish and St. Joseph Health merged to form a single, unified system, incorporating nine libraries and sixteen full-time staff. We faced several challenges in collecting and reporting service statistics, including the disparate methods of our legacy organizations, the variation in services offered at different libraries, and our large geographic spread. Our merged library serves patrons in seven states, and much of our work, including communication with patrons and each other, is conducted over email.

Description: We chose a tool, REDCap, early in our process. REDCap is easy to use and allowed us …

Organizing Your Organization: Taxonomy And Organizational Schemes In A Health System Institutional Repository, Daina Dickman, Heather J. Martin

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. With a comparatively large volume of items being added there are also concerns with the backend structures to accommodate the institutions’ large research output.

Description: This large, recently merged health system did not already …

The Art Of Questioning: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Rao

Presentations

Have you desired a strengths-based holistic approach to create connections, change and innovation? Conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations where all are heard and hear others with respect and empathy is crucial to healthy organizations. By moving away from problem-fixing/reacting and learning to use powerful questions strategically, leaders and peers can effectively energize, co-create, and innovate.
