Redefining Academic Law Library Excellence In A Technological Age: From Evolution To Revolution, Steven D. Hinckley

This article focuses on the rapidly changing standards of academic law library excellence as the ready availability and diversity of information technologies and digital collections supplant traditional print collections as the determinative measurement of library quality. The author challenges the legal and law library professions to discard traditional qualitative standards (e.g., print volume and title holdings) and to embrace standards that recognize the importance of meaningful access to information that is not tied to physical ownership or location.

As libraries change to meet the evolving needs of our patrons, including the development of online services, many libraries are considering consolidating physical service points to maximize staff and better serve the in-house patron. This article describes the planning, implementation, and evaluation process involved in merging the circulation and reference desks at the University of New Orleans Library. The cross-training process is described in detail, and benefits as well as problems experienced are outlined. The authors also provide advice for those considering a merger at their library.

Brief history of monograph publishing efforts at University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries 2005-2012, including Online Dictionary of Invertebrate Zoology, Hopi Nation, Electronic Texts in American Studies series, and Zea Books. Includes discussions of advantages of electronic publishing, business anomalies and disadvantages of traditional paper "dead-tree" publishing, advice for the library publisher, details of Zea Books contract terms and its print-on-demand supplier (Lulu.com), and various comments along the way.

Presentation given at the 2009 LITA National Forum in Salt Lake City, Utah on archiving OpenCourseWare in the Institutional Repository. The main function of OpenCourseWare is to provide open access to collections of educational materials used in formal courses. The main function of an Institutional Repository is to collect, preserve, and disseminate intellectual output of an institution. Since OCW is a significant portion of the intellectual output of a university, archiving OCW in an institutions repository seems a perfect marriage of means and opportunity.

The researchers interviewed for this data curation profile use data from the US Census and other federal and state government sources and process, analyze, and distribute the data on the project website in a way that makes the data more accessible and easier to use. This pre-conference will cover the basics of planning, editing and publishing a video tutorial or tour. The presenters will cover the basics of creating a high quality product. We will discuss and demonstrate audio recording. Attendees will be given video samples to practice hands on editing with iMovie software. At the end of the workshop, students should be comfortable with the process and motivated to plan and produce their own videos.
