"Mary Cowsert, Jeff Morgan, Patti Ogden, and Barb Ritty have contributed a combined 110 years of dedicated service to our faculty, staff, and students. As Mary, Jeff, Patti, and Barb end their full-time careers at NDLS, I want to acknowledge my gratitude in calling them colleagues for the past six years. They have all exhibited a devotion to our joint enterprise, and they have shared their talents and gifts in so many ways during their years here. All four have forged a legacy of service that will forever be remembered and celebrated."—Ed Edmonds, Associate Dean for Library and Information Technology

Pragmatism And Compromise In Conservation, Peter D. Verheyen 2012 Syracuse University

Pragmatism And Compromise In Conservation, Peter D. Verheyen

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

I write this from the perspective of an apprentice-trained bookbinder and conservator who has spent most of his career working in academic research libraries in the US, work that has included working primarily with special collections, but also heavily used circulating collections and digitization. During this time I have also worked with many other conservators, interns from conservation/preservation programs and students of museum studies and librarianship. While the mission ensuring the long-term health of and continued access to the Library’s collections has not changed, how we do that work and prioritize activities has. This has been a result of changes …

Best Practices For Staff Sharing, Bradley P. Tolppanen, Janice Derr

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Medium to larger academic libraries often hire and train staff members to perform a variety of duties within a single department. However, in the current difficult budgetary environment, such academic libraries may use sharing of staff members between departments and cross-training in order to maintain the provision of high quality library service. This poster session will present a set of best practices for staff sharing, including scheduling and prioritizing tasks, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of such sharing from the perspectives of the supervisors and staff members. Examples of staff sharing as implemented at Booth Library, Eastern Illinois …

Queensborough Community College: Textbook Reserves, Sheila Beck 2012 CUNY Queensborough Community College

Queensborough Community College: Textbook Reserves, Sheila Beck

Publications and Research

This paper examines the textbook reserve collection at Queensborough Community College. Although the collection is heavily used in its current configuration, the library is looking for less labor intensive and less costly alternatives.

The cost of textbooks is skyrocketting. Textbooks are a major, unexpected bill for many students beginning college. Students and their family, used to having their textbooks provided or loaned free of charge at the start of the school year, face often large and unexpected bills when the first term begins. Many times, financial aid does not cover the cost of the books;. Even if it is covered …

The Internet Archive's In-Library Lending Program, Sue Polanka

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Libraries bore the brunt of the growing pains of ebooks in 2011-from the HarperCollins Publishers announcement to limit use to 26 circulations to Penguin Group USA's abrupt withdrawal of content from OverDrive, Inc. to Amazon's facilitation of library downloads on Kindle devices. Many librarians realized the hard way that the benefits of ownership do not accrue in electronic formats. It's no wonder librarians everywhere are searching for fair, sustainable, ownership-based models to procure ebook content. Does this perfect solution exist?

It just might, in the form of the Internet Archive's In-Library Lending Program (http:/ /openlibrary.org/borrow)-a collection created by librarians for …

An Overview Of Web Archiving, Jinfang Niu

School of Information Faculty Publications

This overview is a study of the methods used at a variety of universities, and international government libraries and archives, to select, acquire, describe and access web resources for their archives. Creating a web archive presents many challenges, and library and information schools should ensure that instruction in web archiving methods and skills is made part of their curricula, to help future practitioners meet those challenges. In preparation for developing a web archiving course, the author conducted a comprehensive literature review. The findings are reported in this paper, along with the author's views on some of the methods in use, …

School of Information Faculty Publications

The functionalities that are important to the users of web archives range from basic searching and browsing to advanced personalized and customized services, data mining, and website reconstruction. The author examined ten of the most established English language web archives to determine which functionalities each of the archives supported, and how they compared. A functionality checklist was designed, based on use cases created by the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), and the findings of two related user studies. The functionality review was conducted, along with a comprehensive literature review of web archiving methods, in preparation for the development of a …
