The functionalities that are important to the users of web archives range from basic searching and browsing to advanced personalized and customized services, data mining, and website reconstruction. The author examined ten of the most established English language web archives to determine which functionalities each of the archives supported, and how they compared. A functionality checklist was designed, based on use cases created by the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), and the findings of two related user studies. The functionality review was conducted, along with a comprehensive literature review of web archiving methods, in preparation for the development of a …

Perceptions Of Usability And Usefulness In Digital Libraries, Krystyna K. Matusiak

Library and Information Science: Faculty Publications

This paper provides an overview of a case study research that investigated the use of Digital Library (DL) resources in two undergraduate classes and explored faculty and students’ perceptions of educational digital libraries. This study found that students and faculty use academic DLs primarily for textual resources, but turn to the open Web for visual and multimedia resources. The study participants did not perceive academic libraries as a useful source of digital images and used search engines when searching for visual resources. The limited use of digital library resources for teaching and learning is associated with perceptions of usefulness and …

Turning A Passion Into A Research Project, Maira Bundza

Maira Bundza

As a Latvian-American I became interested in librarianship when assigned to set up a library at the Latvian Studies Center in Kalamazoo. The library was dispersed after Latvia regained its independence, and I started working at Western Michigan University. I have recently turned my research focus back to my ethnic heritage and am excited to be able to combine my professional skills with my passion. I have started looking at not only Latvian, but Estonian and Lithuanian collections in the U.S. As the communities age, what is happening to their libraries, archives and museums? As the information world turns digital, …

Nailing Jelly To The Wall: Understanding Postmodernism's Influence On Library Information Science, Bob LeMoine 2012 San Jose State University

Nailing Jelly To The Wall: Understanding Postmodernism's Influence On Library Information Science, Bob Lemoine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

How did we get into this anyway? "Defining" postmodernism

Q: What do you get when you cross a postmodernist with a Mafia boss?

A: Someone who will make you an offer that no one can understand!

(Cook, 2001(b), p. 18)

This is the attempt to define something which by its very nature avoids definition. Before we can speak of the influence postmodernism is having on library and information areas, we have to at least make the attempt to understand what postmodernism is. Several of these "definitions" are what postmodernism is not while others focus on what postmodernism seeks to be. …

Information in the modern context is considered as a strategic resource parallel in importance to land, labour, capital, and entrepreneurship – the traditional economic resources which are vital inputs for national development at all levels. Educators' Perspective On Library Education In Nigeria, Adam Gambo Saleh 2012 University of Maiduguri

Educators' Perspective On Library Education In Nigeria, Adam Gambo Saleh

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library education in Nigeria is very much tied up with the general social and political history of the country. As such, those who aspired to become librarians went to Britain to qualify for the Associate of the Library Association (ALA). However, with the attainment of independence in 1960, the country witnessed the establishment of tertiary institutions at various levels. The first library school was established at University College Ibadan in 1960.

Prior to this period, the Carnegie Corporation has sponsored two studies (Margaret Wrong in 1939 and Ethel Fagan in 1940) to survey the library needs of West Africa with …

Grey Literature Management At Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Siue) Library, Usa: A Macarthur Foundation Grant Research Project, Francisca Okoroma

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Universities are relied on for education, training and manpower development and research for socio-economic development of any nation. For Universities to meet up with the onerous responsibility, they need to provide strong literature support to the teaching, learning, research and community development activities. The unit of the university responsible for the provision, management and dissemination of information to support the effective and expeditious attainment of the objectives of the university is its library. It is pertinent to state that the increase in the volume of literature in the library collection has been occurring at an exponential rate in this information …

Management Of Electronic Resources By Cataloguers In Nigerian Federal University Libraries, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye, Chijioke F. Ugwuanyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library has been a collection of information materials for ages and print media have been the bulk of the library resources. However the advent of information technology in the early 1990s led to the emergence and continuous exponential growth of digitally or electronically borne information resources. (Parker, 2007). Other factors such as provision of space economy; ease of access through numerous metadata, search engines, online catalogues, O.P.A.Cs, and protocols; access which is not hindered by distance or boundaries and simultaneous consultation of the same e- resources by many users, provided the pre-eminence of e-resources over print format. Electronic resources include …
