Imagining Emergent Metadata, Realizing The Emergent Web, Jason A. Bengtson 2012 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Imagining Emergent Metadata, Realizing The Emergent Web, Jason A. Bengtson

Jason A Bengtson

Current metadata schemas are largely analog technology grafted onto the digital format. They have three inherent limitations that need to be transcended: they generate a static product which must be changed manually, they revolve around the needs of human, rather than mechanistic agents, and they are limited by the imagination and organizational capabilities of human agency. The author argues that to meet future challenges metadata will have to take a more flexible, adaptive form that centers on the needs of the machine in searching, interpretation and organization until the information it proxies enters into the human sphere. The author further …

The Uconn Vpc: A Collaborative Story About Desktop Virtualization, Tony Molloy, Jeremy Pollack, Ed Swindelles

UConn Library Presentations

The UConn vPC is a collaborative IT project among the UConn School of Business, the School of Engineering, and the University Libraries. The project delivered virtual desktops to UConn students beginning the fall semester of 2011. Students now have access to UConn-licensed applications from their PCs, Macs, and mobile devices from anywhere in the world where they have Internet access. This session discusses both the technology behind the service and the collaboration between the academic units that built a scalable, centralized service. An overview of the service can be found at http://vpc.uconn.edu.

The Art Of Redirection: Putting Mobile Devices Where You Want Them, Jason A. Bengtson

Jason A Bengtson

Mobile technology has exploded, with many libraries experiencing a surge in access to their resources through mobile devices. In response, many institutions have created or are creating mobile sites designed to accommodate themselves to the unique strictures of these devices. One hurdle faced by these organizations, however, is getting mobile users to those sites. One solution is mobile redirect scripts, which automatically redirect mobile users from a regular page to a mobile page. These scripts come in various forms and present unique challenges to libraries. How are these scripts created? What triggers can or should be used to activate them? …

The Mother Of All Libguides: Reduce Maintenance And Enhance Uniformity Through Strategic Planning, Carol Leibiger, Alan Aldrich

Carol A Leibiger

Many librarians are using the LibGuides product to develop online subject guides, provide library support for courses and the reference desk, or for sharing information with their patrons. LibGuides have won acclaim from librarians because of the ease with which they can be created. One of the most useful features of LibGuides is the ability to share content across different LibGuide pages. Conversely, one of the most problematic issues is the constant need to update content resulting from changing web page URLs, changes in, or even elimination of, databases reflecting changes in the information industry; and revising content in teaching …

Reproducibility: Gold Or Fool’S Gold In Digital Social Research?, Christine Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Data sharing has become a core tenet of science policy in the U.K., U.S., and elsewhere. Among the rationales for sharing data is improving the ability to reproduce or to replicate research. Reproducibility is an oft-stated “gold standard” for science, yet it is a problematic rationale for sharing research data. Sociologists of science have described the difficulties of verifying, let alone reproducing, scientific results, since the 1970s. While most sciences are experiencing a data deluge, the characteristics and practices associated with data vary widely, with different requirements for replication. Reproducibility concerns underlie peer review, identification of fraud, bio-security, and publication …
