"Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy: Creating Strategic Collaborations for a Changing Academic Environment, a white paper published by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL). Written by a working group of leaders from many parts of the association, this white paper explores and articulates three intersections between scholarly communication and information literacy. The paper also provides strategies for librarians from different backgrounds to initiate collaborations within their own campus environments between information literacy and scholarly communication." Picking Up The Pieces: A Retro Etd Project At Utah State University, Richard W. Clement 2013 Utah State University

Picking Up The Pieces: A Retro Etd Project At Utah State University, Richard W. Clement

Richard W. Clement

Inspired by the many accomplishments of our NDLTD colleagues, the Merrill-Cazier Library decided that our current and very successful ETD program (comprising 1800 titles) was not sufficient and that we needed to go back and digitize and make available the previous 100 years of theses and dissertations produced at Utah State University. We recognized that all our theses and dissertations should be made available on our IR, DigitalCommons @ USU. That realization, and reallocation of resources, was the easy part. Our first difficulty was to identify all the previous theses and dissertation and create a registry. From the online catalog …

From Conception To Reality: Building A Successful Ir At Utah State University, Richard W. Clement

Richard W. Clement

Utah State University's conception for its institutional repository has been broad from the outset. Our vision has extended far beyond depositing copies of ETDs and collecting previously published peer-reviewed faculty articles, though these remain important components. We recognized and envisioned a broad continuum of scholarly content created on campus that would benefit from the greater access and visibility afforded by deposit in an IR. This continuum ranges from the University Press and scholarly journals to the reports of the Agricultural Extension Service and the technical reports of the Utah Water Laboratory to student research posters, and much more. We also …

Each year from 2010-2012, the University Libraries has held events in honor of Open Access Week. These events have attempted to make a global celebration relevant to the patrons of a research library. This poster compares three years’ worth of activities and summarizes the takeaway lessons from the perspective of the public service librarians who led these efforts. It incorporates real life examples that range from week-long University-wide celebrations to college-level facilitated discussions.

Geospatial Thinking Of Information Professionals, Bradley Wade Bishop, Melissa P. Johnston 2013 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Geospatial Thinking Of Information Professionals, Bradley Wade Bishop, Melissa P. Johnston

Bradley Wade Bishop

Geospatial thinking skills inform a host of library decisions including planning and managing facilities, analyzing service area populations, facility site location, library outlet and service point closures, as well as assisting users with their own geospatial needs. Geospatial thinking includes spatial cognition, spatial reasoning, and knowledge discovery. A lack of understanding of librarians’ geospatial thinking called for some preliminary investigation into the geospatial thinking skills of information professionals. Findings from this pilot study’s performance task indicate geospatial thinking skills improved for ten information professionals tested after some training with geospatial technologies. A summary provides recommendations on how to both improve …

Public Libraries As Post Crisis Information Hubs, Bradley Wade Bishop, Shari R. Veil

Bradley Wade Bishop

Like the crisis responses to hurricanes, after a tornadic event, public libraries play emergency roles both in the short and long term. Community members rely on public libraries for Internet access to request aid, to help find missing family and friends, to file Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and insurance claims, and, in general, to begin rebuilding their lives. This article reports the quality of services and activities public libraries performed in response and recovery in 12 different communities impacted by tornadoes. The discussion includes an evaluation of the quality of the responses and some recommendations to improve preparedness and …

In the fall of 2013 Sturgis Library began investigating new collection development methods for serving the needs of students and faculty at Kennesaw State University (KSU), with the intent to enhance both collection and service excellence. One area targeted for improvement beginning in FY2013- 2014 was interlibrary loan service. With over 10,000 borrowing requests in FY 2011 -2012, Library Administration engaged the newly hired Collection Development Librarian and the ILL Paraprofessional to begin investigating and implementing a robust electronic book DDA (Demand Driven Acquisitions) program in conjunction with a PDA (Patron Driven Acquisitions) program. This presentation will highlight the process …

Ilibraries: Maintaining Relevancy In A Mobile World, Ariel K. Turner

Ariel K Turner

Though the wealth of opportunities mobile technologies provide to libraries is widely acknowledged, some libraries continue to experience challenges when incorporating these technologies. These challenges include technological illiteracy, prohibitive cost, and the effect of these technologies on the traditional library environment. An examination of a variety of current literature and studies related to the incorporation of mobile technologies is necessary to determine how best to tackle these challenges, and suggests several methods of incorporating mobile technologies into academic libraries. Such methods include exploring technical blogs or classes, learning from technologically savvy peers, including tablets or other mobile devices in the …

Social Media And Citation Metrics, Linda M. Galloway, Anne E. Rauh 2013 Syracuse University

Social Media And Citation Metrics, Linda M. Galloway, Anne E. Rauh

Anne Rauh

Quantifying scholarly output via traditional citation metrics is the time-honored method to gauge academic success. However, as the tentacles of social media spread into professional personas, scholars are interacting more frequently and more meaningfully with these tools. Measuring the influence and impact of scholarly engagement with online tools and networks is gaining importance in academia today. Assessing the impact of a scholar’s work can be measured by evaluating several factors including the number of peer-reviewed publications, citations to these publications and the influence of the publications. These metrics take a relatively long time to accumulate, some are available only via …

The Role Of Librarians In Academic Success, Claudia J. Dold

Claudia J. Dold

Librarians address all levels of information needs for the university: its acquisition, its production, its storage, and instruction for its safe and gainful use. Most of today’s college students have a high degree of computer literacy but are weak in their abilities to determine the quality of the information that is so readily available. Students need to be taught to find, evaluate, and use information in an academically-oriented manner in order to solve complex problems. Good library skills are integral to academic success. In conjunction with research and teaching faculty, librarians create a framework for knowledge acquisition in the evolving …

Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin

Meghan Banach Bergin

The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs. I received a total of 148 responses to the survey. Of the 148 responses, 100 respondents finished the survey. To follow up from the survey, I conducted …

Reading Matters In The Academic Library: Taking The Lead From Public Librarians, Pauline Dewan 2013 Wilfrid Laurier University

Reading Matters In The Academic Library: Taking The Lead From Public Librarians, Pauline Dewan

Library Publications

With the increasing virtualization of resources, reference service, and instruction, college students have fewer reasons to visit the academic library, a place they believe lacks relevance in their lives. This article explores the idea of revitalizing academic libraries by reconsidering the place of pleasure reading in them. Considerable research has been conducted on reading in the last quarter century. Reading serves a host of essential functions, far more than we have ever guessed. The first part of this paper looks at the social, psychological, moral, emotional, and cognitive role it plays in our lives. The second half examines readers’ advisory …

Web-Based Citation Management Systems: Which One Is Best?, Michael Steeleworthy, Pauline Dewan

Library Publications

Librarians and researchers have long used citation management systems as research tools to help scholars organize their work, improve workflows, and ultimately save time. For many years, RefWorks has been the dominant citation management tool in many parts of Canada: the maturity of the product and its integration with many scholarly databases reassures users that it works well with these resources. However, a number of competitors now offer citation management systems that are as strong as RefWorks but offer different features to the user, therefore warranting a comparison with this leading tool. This paper reviews RefWorks, Zotero, WizFolio, and Mendeley, …
