Subversive Infusions: Integrating Information Literacy Across The Curriculum, Benjamin R. Harris

Library Faculty Research

Beginning in 2004, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requires institutions seeking accreditation to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to improve student learning. QEP topics may be focused on a single educational initiative or may combine several efforts in order to enhance and assess student learning. While some plans have focused on information literacy specifically, a fair number of the QEP proposals submitted to SACS between 2007-2011 have integrated information literacy learning outcomes as part of another topic. An analysis of the topics and outcomes proposed at 58 institutions offers librarians and information professionals an alternative perspective …

When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael J. Hughes

Library Faculty Research

Data curation is one way that libraries are extending traditional services to meet the changing needs of patrons. Requirements from research funders have placed increased pressure on grant recipients to create Data Management Plans and to securely store raw data. Research universities have stepped up to provide comprehensive data support services. Despite discrepancies in funding and staff, smaller institutions can similarly provide robust services by focusing on their strengths, such as interdepartmental collaboration, flexibility, and rapid turnaround time. This article details how librarians at Trinity University adapted the larger practice of curation to meet local data management needs.

Peerj, Michael J. Hughes 2013 Trinity University

Peerj, Michael J. Hughes

Library Faculty Research

PeerJ is the Open Access (OA) publisher of a biomedical journal, also called PeerJ. In addition to its peer-reviewed flagship, it runs a preprint server, PeerJ Preprints, to which authors can submit draft, incomplete, and final papers for informal peer review, and to establish precedent. The company’s chief innovation, however, is a novel if untried business model: extending to authors lifetime publication privileges in exchange for a one-time fee. This strategy adheres to the basic formula of fee-based Gold OA in that an upfront charge pays for the operations of the journal. PeerJ diverges from its predecessors in that it …

Developing information literacy skills in undergraduate students is an ongoing and dynamic process. With this in mind, a research project was developed to better understand a student population. During Fall 2012, a convenience sample of undergraduate Health Professions students were surveyed during library instructional sessions. Demographic information, confidence in performing information literacy-related tasks, and mastery of information literacy questions were collected. This poster will highlight the differences between students' self-reported mastery levels and their actual quiz results. Librarians at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library are using reference statistical software to record transactions at the merged reference desk. The software program allows libraries to easily compile and report on reference transaction data. Aggregated and analyzed reference transactions for a period of one year will be presented. The data demonstrates the needs of the patrons from this merged library and conversely indicates what proficiencies and capabilities are required from employees. Important information can be gained from using a reference tracking system. Understanding the nature of the questions being answered at the desk will enable libraries to identify …
