In the present paper, generalized Szász–Mirakyan operators in exponential weighted space of functions of one variable are introduced. Using a method given by Rempulska and Walczak, some theorems on the degree of approximation are investigated. Furthermore, a numerical example with an illustrative graphic is given to show comparison for the error estimates of the operators.

This paper is concerned with the study of thermoelastic beam in modified couple stress theory. The governing equations of motion for modified couple stress theory and heat conduction equation for non-Fourier (non-classical process) are investigated to model the vibrations in a homogeneous isotropic thin beam in a closed form by employing the Euler Bernoulli beam theory. In this article, the homotopy analysis method (HAM) for obtaining the analytical solution of the inverse parabolic problem and computing the unknown time-dependent parameter is introduced. The series solution is developed and the recurrence relations are given explicitly. Special attention is given to satisfy the convergence of the proposed method. In bifurcation theory, there is a theorem (called Sotomayor's Theorem) which proves the existence of one of three possible bifurcations of a given system, provided that certain conditions of the system are satisfied. It turns out that there is a "similar" theorem for proving the existence of what is referred to as a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. The author is only aware of one reference that has the proof of this theorem. However, most of the details were left out of the proof. The contribution of this thesis is to provide the details of the proof on the existence of Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations.

The circadian clock, responsible for coordinating organism function with daily and seasonal changes in the day-night cycle, is controlled by a complex protein network that constitutes a robust biochemical oscillator. Deterministic ordinary differential equation models have been used extensively to model the behavior of these central clocks. We study certain infinite-dimensional probability measures in connection with frame analysis. Earlier work on frame-measures has so far focused on the case of finite-dimensional frames. We point out that there are good reasons for a sharp distinction between stochastic analysis involving frames in finite vs. infinite dimensions. For the case of infinite-dimensional Hilbert space ℋ, we study three cases of measures. We first show that, for ℋ infinite dimensional, one must resort to infinite dimensional measure spaces which properly contain ℋ. The three cases we consider are: (i) Gaussian frame measures, (ii) Markov path-space measures, and (iii) determinantal measures.

As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease has become a principal concern in modern society. Cardiac arrhythmias can be caused by a dysregulation of calcium dynamics in cardiomyocytes. Calcium dysregulation, however, is not yet fully understood and is not easily predicted; this provides motivation for the subsequent research. Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process through which cardiomyocytes undergo contraction from an action potential. Tasmanian devil populations have been devastated by devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) since its first appearance in 1996. The average lifespan of a devil has decreased from six years to three years. We present an age-structured model to represent how the disease has affected the age and breeding structures of the population. We show that with the recent increase in the breeding of juvenile devils, the overall devil population will increase but not nearly to pre-DFTD levels. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel, visual method in analyzing complex functional trait data in freshwater ecology. We focus on macroinvertebrates in stream ecosystems under a gradient of habitat degradation and employ a combination of taxonomic and functional trait diversity analyses. Then we use graph theory to link changes in functional trait diversity to taxonomic richness and habitat degradation. We test the hypotheses that: 1) taxonomic diversity and trophic functional trait diversity both decrease with increased habitat degradation; 2) loss of taxa leads to a decrease in trophic function as visualized using a bipartite graph; and …

At The University of New Mexico (UNM), Intermediate Algebra (MATH 120 and MATH 101-102-103) has historically been a so-called “killer course”, with very low pass rates: approximately 40% in Fall 2009 to Spring 2011 and about 50% from Fall 2011 to Spring 2013. Furthermore, many students failed the class multiple times. Since 2013, a computer system called ALEKS has been used to teach the course and, along with some additional interventions, on Albuquerque/Main campus success rates for MATH 101 have increased to roughly 80% and MATH 102 to about 70%. In certain layered electromagnetic media, one can construct a waveguide that supports a harmonic electromagnetic field at a frequency that is embedded in the continuous spectrum. When the structure is perturbed, this embedded eigenvalue moves into the complex plane and becomes a “complex resonance” frequency. The real and imaginary parts of this complex frequency have physical meaning. Amyloid-beta plaques are prominent biological markers in dementia brains. In response to plaque formation, the brain's immune cells, microglia, become reactive. Microglia are measurable cells that surround amyloid-beta plaques, indicating their location. A system of partial differential equations describes the concentration of microglia in dementia brains by incorporating chemotactic signaling. However, this system fails to incorporate increasing numbers of reactive microglia cells in response to amyloid-beta aggregation. A system of ordinary differential equations describing the number of significant cells and proteins in the brain suggests the amount of reactive microglia increases significantly during the progression of dementia. Abstract.: The terminal orientation of a rigid body in a moving fluid is an example of a dissipative system, out of thermodynamic equilibrium and therefore a perfect testing ground for the validity of the maximum entropy production principle (MaxEP). Thus far, dynamical equations alone have been employed in studying the equilibrium states in fluid-solid interactions, but these are far too complex and become analytically intractable when inertial effects come into play. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial aneurysms originating at the posterior communicating artery are known to have high rupture risk compared with other locations. We tested the hypothesis that different angioarchitectures (ie, branch point configuration) of posterior communicating artery aneurysms are associated with aneurysm hemodynamics, which in turn predisposes aneurysms to rupture.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 313 posterior communicating artery aneurysms (145 ruptured, 168 unruptured) were studied with image-based computational fluid dynamics. Aneurysms were classified into different angioarchitecture types depending on the location of the aneurysm with respect to parent artery bifurcation. Fourier pseudo-spectral method on equispaced grid is one of the approaches in turbulence simulation, to compute derivative of discrete data, using fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and gives low dispersion and dissipation errors. In many turbulent flows the dynamically important scales of motion are concentrated in certain regions which requires a coarser grid for higher accuracy. A coarser grid in other regions minimizes the memory requirement. This requires the use of Non-equispaced Fast Fourier Transform (NFFT) to compute the Fourier transform, by solving a system of linear equations.

To achieve similar accuracy, the NFFT needs to return more Fourier coefficients than …
