Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. …

A new subject-liaison assignment carries with it a daunting information-management challenge: Who are the faculty members in this department, and how have they worked with the previous subject librarian? Often librarians step into such a role completely blind to this history, but with an easy-to-use online tool, helpful information such as faculty photos, CVs, syllabi, assignment descriptions, research interests, collection needs, teaching schedules, notes on planning meetings and library-instruction sessions, and more can be given to a librarian along with their new subject assignment. Legwork to gather the information from department websites and personnel is required up front, but Trello, …

Ethnography In Action: Active Learning In Academic Library Outreach To Middle School Students, Samantha Godbey, Nancy Fawley, Xan Goodman, Susan Wainscott

Library Faculty Publications

This article describes an outreach activity developed and coordinated by academic librarians as part of a state program for low-income middle school students. Rather than offering a traditional library tour, the library organizers wanted to provide the middle school students with a meaningful experience that would encourage active participation, critical thinking, and alleviate library anxiety. As a spin on the traditional tour, students applied an ethnographic approach to learning about the library. The authors describe the development and implementation of the activity and provide recommendations for other librarians involved in outreach to K-12 students.

Time Is On My Side : Harnessing The Power Of Automation For Efficient Archival Workflows., Heather Fox, Sarah Dorpinghaus

Faculty Scholarship

In the 21st century, the idea of utilizing technology to increase efficiency is nothing new. However, many librarians and archivists lack specialized training in computer programming, file management, and other advanced technological skills. Instead, our professional training focused on more traditional aspects of librarianship like the reference interview, collection development, and subject analysis. Although these remain important components of serving our users, learning new ways to streamline workflows can free up time we spend on automatable tasks and allow us more time to concentrate on specialized aspects of our work that only we as trained archivists and librarians can accomplish. …

Undisciplined Liaisons: Providing Liaison Librarian Services To University Units Beyond Academic Departments, Kristen S. Shuyler, Stefanie Warlick

Libraries

Can we sustainably extend liaison librarian programs beyond disciplines to include student affairs departments, student groups, interdisciplinary research centers, and other groups on campus? This roundtable explores the idea of expanding liaison programs to recognize the importance of holistic approaches to student development. Many libraries already have successful relationships with student support services, ranging from informal connections forged out of shared interests, to formal learning commons. Can creating broader liaison programs further contribute to student success?

Curriculum Mapping As A Strategic Planning Tool, Susan Archambault, Jennifer Masunaga Jan 2015

Curriculum Mapping As A Strategic Planning Tool, Susan Archambault, Jennifer Masunaga

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Curriculum mapping is a procedure for documenting and visualizing student learning at the programmatic level. The process allows libraries the opportunity to record where information literacy skills are taught across the curriculum in order to locate gaps and redundancies within a library instruction program. It also allows for alignment of the library’s learning outcomes with the learning outcomes important to the institution. This paper presents a review of the history of curriculum mapping, followed by a case study of how Loyola Marymount University (LMU) used the process to support information literacy in a new core curriculum.

Genrifying The School Library's Fiction Collection, Andrea Hora

Graduate Research Papers

Genrification, or the act of organizing a library or section of a library by genres or topics, has been a trend in recent years in both school and public libraries. Little to no research has been conducted on the effectiveness of this transition from the Dewey Decimal System in fiction and or nonfiction collections. The purpose of this research is to explore the usefulness of a genrified fiction collection in a school library by examining how students interact with the collection along with teachers’ perceptions of genrifying. This study focused on student browsing behavior in a genrified fiction collection and …

Teacher Librarians & Literacy Coaches: Their Roles In Reading Support, Nicole N. Ruthaivilavan

Graduate Research Papers

According to AASL (2010), multiple research studies have confirmed that there is a correlation between school library programs staffed by certified school librarians and increased student achievement; yet, many schools are also beginning to employ literacy coaches to improve reading achievement. With the teacher librarian being a well-established part of the school system, and playing a vital role in supporting students’ reading achievement, a clear definition of roles is needed. The purpose of this case study was to analyze roles and responsibilities of teacher librarians and literacy coaches and to determine how schools can utilize one or both of these …

Open Legal Educational Materials: The Frequently Asked Questions, James Boyle, Jennifer Jenkins

Faculty Scholarship

There has been considerable discussion in academic circles about the possibility of moving toward open educational materials—those which may be shared, copied and altered freely, without permission or fee. Legal education is particularly ripe for such a transition, as many of the source materials—including federal statutes and cases—are in the public domain. In this article, we discuss our experience producing an open casebook and statutory supplement on Intellectual Property Law, and answer many of the frequently asked questions about the project. Obviously, open coursebooks are less expensive and more convenient for students. But we found that they also offer pedagogical …
