DataQ is an IMLS­-funded project led by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, GWLA, and GPN to develop an online knowledge-­base of research data questions and answers curated for and by the library community. Publicly submitted questions to DataQ are reviewed by an Editorial Team of experts from 15 institutions across the United States. The site also includes links to resources, best practices, and practical approaches to working with researchers to address specific research data issues. This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.

This session will describe the promotion campaign we designed for the James Madison University Libraries' 2015 LibQUAL+ survey. Ultimately, this campaign was not just about the survey - it was about how we want our campus to feel about the Libraries.

Libraries commonly engage their user communities by gathering users' feedback. Analyzing and acting on user feedback can lead to the responsive design and (re)development of library services, spaces, and programs. In a system with multiple service points, how can leadership work together to keep the library as a whole relevant and central to students? James Madison University Libraries created the Joint Library Services Leadership Team, which works outside traditional departmental silos to provide coherent, consistent, and collaborative services regardless of location.

Three major service points of James Madison University Libraries, the two main library circulation/reference departments and the media resources center, have historically been both physically and philosophically separate from each other. Institutions globally have increasingly embraced Institutional Repositories (IRs) to collect, showcase, archive, and preserve their intellectual and scholarly output. Many benefits are gained from implementation of the platform including: the institution’s visibility, status and reputation is increased; authors get wider public access and visibility thus more citations for their work; long-term preservation of research; and the library benefits from its new role in information creation and distribution thus the opportunity to re-assert its importance in the face of declining user dependence on libraries for simple access to information (Sharif 2013).

What is the art of writing a book review? Succinctly articulating a book’s main selling points, presenting a clear evaluation, and the occasional witty quip are just some of the many components in a reviewer’s bag of tricks. Finding venues to publish reviews (journals, review outlets, blogs) suited to your professional and individual areas of expertise also requires savvy. This presentation will demonstrate how book reviews can be effective tools for a librarian’s collection efforts, an avenue of exposure for one’s library, and a vital artistic and creative outlet in a profession that doesn’t always allow time for those pursuits.

This review of OAIster investigated the utility of OAIster as a tool for library users to discover and access relevant information. Because the vision for OAIster is so large, one goal of this review was to describe OAIster based on reviewing search results. FirstSearch, OAIster.worldcat.org, and EBSCO Discovery Service interfaces were reviewed. Five searches were performed in each interface, and the material types and counts were recorded. As a primer on data information literacy (DIL), this column will cover the background of the field and why it is relevant to college and university libraries serving undergraduate populations. This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.

No Budget, No Experience, No Problem: Creating A Library Orientation Game For Freshman Engineering Majors, Kelly Giles

“Mystery at the Library” is a simple, inexpensive game developed as a library orientation activity for freshman engineering students. Players searched the library building and online to find clues and solve the mystery of a stolen book. Feedback from players and library desk staff was used to improve the game over time. A straightforward narrative with puzzles focused on learning objectives kept players engaged and avoided unnecessary confusion. A post-game survey indicated that the game was both helpful and fun for a majority of respondents.

This poster describes the development and pilot of a tailored information literacy assessment tool for undergraduate allied health students. Tool development included collaboration between assessment experts, Health Science faculty, and Health Science librarians. Can we sustainably extend liaison librarian programs beyond disciplines to include student affairs departments, student groups, interdisciplinary research centers, and other groups on campus? This roundtable explores the idea of expanding liaison programs to recognize the importance of holistic approaches to student development. Many libraries already have successful relationships with student support services, ranging from informal connections forged out of shared interests, to formal learning commons. Can creating broader liaison programs further contribute to student success?
