This presentation covers research on the physics and astronomy graduate students’ use and understanding of open access resources. The research, which was conducted in summer 2015, surveyed the physics and astronomy graduate students of Georgia Institute of Technology to discover how graduate students discover open access and other academic resources, as well as their level of awareness about open access in general and specific OA databases in particular. This poster presented the library research instruction activities for a Georgia State University SOCI 3356 Queer Identities “Decades Paper” class assignment. For this assignment, students assume the imaginary identity of a teen/young adult “coming out” into a lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans/queer (LGBT/Q) sexual/gender identity during an assigned decade between the 1950s and the present. Assessment And Weeding Of A Clinical Hiv/Aids Collection In An Academic Library: A Case Study, Sharon Leslie, Ida Martinez

Maintaining a clinical HIV/AIDS section in an academic library collection that is both current and historically significant for research is essential. This article reports on a collection management project that was undertaken to weed HIV/AIDS books in targeted clinical areas of an academic library using a timeline model developed by Ondrusek (2001) as a supplement to traditional weeding methods. The combination proved effective for identifying clinical materials that were outdated and needed to be deaccessioned while maintaining historically relevant materials in these areas.

Large-scale panoramic displays designed for collaboration can change users’ perspective and reframe and amplify digital content in a shared pixel space. Many universities have implemented large-scale displays, but they are often in areas that restrict access to the equipment and require staff mediation for use. Additionally, dedicated staff may be required to program content for the walls, limiting the variety of content displayed. In academic institutions today, there are greater expectations of accountability requiring tenure-track faculty to substantively demonstrate scholarly impact for annual reporting, benchmarking, and promotion and tenure. Database vendors and other content providers are creating robust, yet user-friendly, scholarly impact tools within current products. In response, institutional libraries are offering workshops, individual assistance, research guides, and other activities to promote the value and usage of these tools. However, there is no dedicated scholarly impact outreach program yet documented in the library literature.
