Replicating Bales Problem Solving Experiments On A Computerized Conference: A Pilot Study, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Kenneth Johnson, Gail Agle

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

Computerized Conferencing is a new form of communication in which the participants type their comments into a computer terminal, and receive their instructions and the comments of others printed on their terminal. This is a report on the results of a pilot study which was aimed mainly at exploring and solving the methodological problems presented by the need to adapt the procedures for conducting and coding face-to-face discussions to studies of this new medium. It represents the first set of controlled experiments on group discussions via a computerized conference.

The independent variable in this pilot study was mode of communication …

Interpersonal Communication As A Function Of Subject Representational Mode, Joseph Adrian Williams Jan 1978

Interpersonal Communication As A Function Of Subject Representational Mode, Joseph Adrian Williams

Masters Theses

The study investigated aspects of a communications model of psychotherapy advanced by Grinder and Bandler. Subjects were thirty male and female undergraduate introductory psychology students at Eastern Illinois University during the summer of 1977. The subjects ranked a set of tape recorded statements for "understandability". These statements were presented in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic representational modes. Subject ratings provided a measure of which representational modes communicated most effectively to them. Three independent judges rated transcripts of recorded samples of the subject's actual language usage to determine the representational modes utilized by the subjects. Analysis of the ratings resulted in a …

Communication Apprehension In Problem-Solving Dyads, James Harris Sep 1977

Communication Apprehension In Problem-Solving Dyads, James Harris

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of communication apprehension and sex on task efficiency, satisfaction, liking, and trust following a dyadic problem-solving situation. The experimental design was a h x 3 analysis of variance determined by the level of communication apprehension (high-low) and by the sex of the dyads (male-male, male-female, female-female). The results indicated that the high communication apprehensive dyads had significantly less task efficiency, less satisfaction, less liking, and less trust than the low apprehensive dyads. Further, male-male dyads had significantly more satisfaction and significantly less trust than the female-female dyads.

This research project is an attempt to study the way in which this interaction is perceived by a group of female adolescents involved in the Bridge, a short-term residential program for girls in a state of early crisis as demonstrated by runaway behavior. This study specifically focuses on communication behaviors of parents and of adults other than parents as perceived by the adolescent upon her entry into The Bridge and at her release …

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers Jan 1977

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers

Masters Theses

The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.

The experimental distances used in …

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr. Jul 1976

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship of attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length to selection interview outcome was investigated by directly observing fifty-four selection interviews. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that although attitude change was the only independent variable significantly related to interview outcome, all three independent variables interacted in such a manner that applicant acceptance or rejection was correctly predicted 83 percent of the time. Attitude change was concluded to be the product of interview content. Furthermore, the predictive power of variable interaction was interpreted as meaning that given attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length, applicant acceptance or …

Communications And Group Decision-Making : Experimental Evidence On The Potential Impact Of Computer Conferenging, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

This paper is a selective review of small group experiments in the area of the relationship between communication (modes, structures, processes) and group decision-making or problem solving. There are literally hundreds of these experiments; the purpose of this effort has been to isolate and summarize the results of those experimental traditions which may have the most bearing upon:

  1. our understanding of the probable social effects of computer conferencing as a communication mode;
  2. the identification of possible experiments utilizing computer conferencing which appear to be potentially most fruitful in terms of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of computer conferencing in facilitating …

Interpersonal Communication: The Shift Toward A Student-Centered Perspective In The Basic Speech Course, Gavin Whitsett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this paper is to describe both the conceptual and methodological changes in the basic course and to test a unique communication training program which is congruent with the rhetoric of schooling and relevant to the needs of students. Consistent with this purpose, chapter one involves a discussion of the purpose of education and a suggestion that, in light of recent findings in educational psychology, higher education may be moving away from traditional practices. Chapter two affirms the importance of communication studies to human affairs; the transition in the basic speech course is documented and paralleled to the …

Predictive Correlates Of Adoption Behavior In A Social Context: A Multiple Discriminant Analysis, Robert Brady Aug 1975

Predictive Correlates Of Adoption Behavior In A Social Context: A Multiple Discriminant Analysis, Robert Brady

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Working from a communication theory paradigm and from previous literature, the purpose of this study was to empirically examine significant receiver correlates which predict adoption behavior of Sigma Nu Fraternity on three campuses. Drawing from past research, the present study utilized a unique combination of social and communication variables as predictors of fraternity membership. A stepwise multiple discriminant analysis using five factors derived from the thirteen independent variables yielded a highly significant three factor discriminant function (p < .001) which explained 46.65 percent of the common variance in adoption/non-adoption behavior of Sigma Nu. The significant factors were labeled peer group behavior, parental economic support, and social attitudes. Based on intuitive interpretation features of the data, the researcher suspects that adopters are more socially oriented, have a wider variety o: friends, are less dependent on parental economic support, and exhibit higher scores on measures such as self-esteem, liberalism, conservatism, and the need for identification with groups.

The Effects Of Leader Presence And Moderate Stress Upon Small Group Sentiment And Interaction, Ray Lewis Cordon Jan 1972

The Effects Of Leader Presence And Moderate Stress Upon Small Group Sentiment And Interaction, Ray Lewis Cordon

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of leader presence and moderate stress upon sentiment and interaction in small groups. Seventy-four students were selected from the required speech course at Eastern Illinois University to serve as subjects. These subjects were assigned to sixteen groups, ranging from four to five members per group.

Silent and absent leadership, imposed stress and no stress were introduced to the groups through a 2 X 2 factorial design. In one condition (N = 18) the group leader provided instructions and then remained silent during group interaction, and moderate stress--an announced time barrier--was …

An Exploration Into The Applicability Of A Psychological Technique For Anthropological Research, Gwendolyn Marie Harris Pierce Dec 1971

An Exploration Into The Applicability Of A Psychological Technique For Anthropological Research, Gwendolyn Marie Harris Pierce

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis purports to explore and describe the types of information that would be obtainable to the anthropological researcher if he used the minimally structured small group (MDMS-SG) technique with members of a selected ethnic group. The approach was tried on Japanese Portland State University students and also on Saudi Arab Portland State University students for six sessions each. They were told that a graduate anthropology student wanted to get to know them and learn what they thought she should know about their countries.

The sessions were taped and notes written after each session. This corpus of material was analyzed …

Communicative Abilities: An Analysis Of The Interactions Of Reticent And Non-Reticent Task Groups, Myron W. Lustig Jul 1971

Communicative Abilities: An Analysis Of The Interactions Of Reticent And Non-Reticent Task Groups, Myron W. Lustig

Dissertations and Theses

This study is focused upon an investigation of observable interactive behaviors which might be characteristic of reticence. A reticent individual is defined as one for whom apprehension about participation in oral communication consistently outweighs the projection of gain from the situation.

Previous research in the area of reticence has been focused on an analysis of the reticent student's attitudes toward communication relying primarily upon subject self-reports via journals and the in-depth interview. This in turn has provided possible areas in which observable reticent behaviors might evidence themselves in face-to-face small group communications with other reticents and non-reticents.

An answer to …

The survey of projects was initiated by Miss Kessler, who located sources pertaining to work-orientation in the junior high school, remedial programs for drop-outs, and programs in which language skills were taught in the context of teaching units and courses in occupations. A form was mailed to various cities to obtain curricula and reports on projects.

During the summer of 1968, the author read 200 articles, curricula and project reports in an effort to gain insights into objectives, activities and evaluations of work-orientation programs. The result of this survey will be reported in three sections: (1) concepts of work-orientation; (2) …

The Little Ones At Home, J Bowen Jan 1964

The Little Ones At Home, J Bowen

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WHERE there is just one child at home by day, whether it be an only child or the youngest of an older family, mother often has a lonely child on her hands—and very often a bored little one at that.

A former kindergarten teacher—now a country mother of six children—discusses the problems.
