A Study Of Oxomolybdenum Chelate Compounds Of Oxidation States (V) And (Iv) When Prepared By Photochemical Reduction Of Oxomolybdenum (Vi) Complexes In Ethanol Under Inert Atmosphere And By Chemical Reduction, Richard Donald Dendinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A photolysis system was designed for meticulous exclusion of oxygen and moisture. Photolyzed ethanol solutions of dioxobis(acetylacetonato)-molybdenum(VI), Mo02 (acac)2, were studied via preparation of derivatives with several uninegative bidentate ligands (chelH, cysteine was designated cystH2) and pyridine (py). Infrared spectroscopy was a useful tool in identifying these compounds. An oxomolybdenum(IV) compound, MoO(dtc)2 was isolated from the red photolyzed solution when dtc was the N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate ion. Tropolone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate, and cysteine formed products formulated as the dioxo bridged molybdenum(V) compounds, Mo204(che1)2. Acetylacetone, tropolone, 8-Hydroxyquinoline and N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate, formed derivatives formulated …

Kinetics Of The Cope Rearrangement Of 3,4-Diphenylhexa-1,5-Diene, Harlan Albert Jerome Berg

Dissertations and Theses

Kinetics investigations of the thermal Cope rearrangement of meso-and d1-3,4-diphenylhexa-1,5-dienes were undertaken in order to gain information about the transition states for these reactions by determining the appropriate enthalpies and entropies of activation. Of particular interest were the activation parameters for the meso compounds' rearrangement as it represents the only known example in which both four-and six-centered transition states are of comparable energy.

Kinetics of the dl isomers' rearrangement in the temperature range 90-110⁰were determined using 5 X 10¯⁵M solutions of the olefin in heptane contained within sealed Pyrex ampules. Extents of reaction were determined from UV absorbance measurements at …

On The Mechanism Of The Diels-Alder Reaction--Dimerization Of Trans-Phenylbutadiene, Michael Ward Mcnicholas Jan 1972

On The Mechanism Of The Diels-Alder Reaction--Dimerization Of Trans-Phenylbutadiene, Michael Ward Mcnicholas

Dissertations and Theses

The Diels-Alder dimerization of trans-1-substituted butadienes is expected to yield a cyclohexene adduct with the substituents in the 3 and 4 positions cis to one another. This prediction is based on past observations of other Diels-Alder additions. The cis-isomer is the only one consistent with a two-stage mechanism proposed by Woodward and Katz.

In the case of trans-phenylbutadiene, the expected adduct is cis-3-phenyl 1-4-(trans-styry1) cyclohexene. Alder, Haydn and Vogt, however, reported that the corresponding trans-isomer is the dimerization product. There is reason to believe that the observation of the trans-isomer may have been the result of product isomerization during purification. …

Reaction Of Aqueous Catechol Solutions With Minerals, Boonthong Poocharoen Jan 1972

Reaction Of Aqueous Catechol Solutions With Minerals, Boonthong Poocharoen

Dissertations and Theses

The effectiveness of catechol, an aromatic vic-diol, in dissolving silicate minerals was studied. A synthetic amorphous magnesium trisilicate, Mg₂Si₃O₈∙5H₂O, as well as the minerals olivine, sepiolite, diopside, augite, and enstatite were used to react with catechol in slightly acidic, basic, and neutral solutions. It was found, depending on the solvent used, that 33-52, 8-17, 14-30, 5-11, 3-6, and 0.5-1 % of the minerals dissolved, respectively.

The reaction with Mg₂Si₃0₈·5H₂0 resulted in the formation of crystals of magnesium tris (catecholato) siliconate nonahydrate Mg[Si(Cat)₃]∙9H₂0. Dehydration of the crystals at room temperature resulted in the loss of 6 moles of water to form …

Superphosphate Deficiency Raises Pasture Oestrogens, H G. Neil, T. Marshall Jan 1970

Superphosphate Deficiency Raises Pasture Oestrogens, H G. Neil, T. Marshall

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A recent field experiment on established pastures at Esperance Downs Research Station has demonstrated a relationship between superphosphate application, pasture oestrogens and oestrogenic response in sheep.

Results of the experiment indicate that on phosphate deficient soils carrying oestrogenic clovers, the levels of oestrogenic materials in the pasture are increased if superphosphate applications are below those recommended for healthy pasture growth.

Effect Of Trace Metals On Growth Rate Of Algae, Gabriel H. Srouji Jan 1970

Effect Of Trace Metals On Growth Rate Of Algae, Gabriel H. Srouji

Honors Theses

Heavy metals, although only in traces, are essential for all forms of life. They are taken up by the living cell in the form of cations, and their uptake is strictly regulated because most or all of them are toxic in excess. A remarkable specificity has been found: seldom can an excess of one essential metal prevent the damage caused by deficiency of another. In fact, such an excess often increase the injurious effect of deficiency.

Metal-binding substances, many of which function by chelation, form a class of substances which have furnished many useful drugs and other substances of value …

The Reaction Of Ethylenediamine With Cobalt (Ii) Perchlorate And Oxygen In Dilute Aqueous Solutions, Robert J. Karmy Aug 1968

The Reaction Of Ethylenediamine With Cobalt (Ii) Perchlorate And Oxygen In Dilute Aqueous Solutions, Robert J. Karmy

All Master's Theses

Cobalt (II) perchlorate was reacted with ethylenediamine and molecular oxygen. Various mole ratios of ethylenediamine to cobalt (II) were oxygenated and studied by photometric, potentiometric, conductometric, magnetic susceptibility, freezing point depression, electron spin resonance and cobalt (II) extraction methods. The fact that the complex was brown in color, diamagnetic, contained ethylenediamine to cobalt to oxygen in a mole ratio of 4:2:1 was confirmed. The complex underwent elation to form a polymeric species with excess base. The complex could not be oxidized to a green paramagnetic complex by reacting it with sodium peroxydisulfate, potassium bromate, bromine or chlorine. Ammonia was added …

Phalaris Staggers : Prevention By Cobalt Bullets, Bryan J. Gorddard, P. P. Mann, A. J. Hadlow Jan 1967

Phalaris Staggers : Prevention By Cobalt Bullets, Bryan J. Gorddard, P. P. Mann, A. J. Hadlow

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FARMERS in the south west of Western Australia are familiar with the use of cobalt for the prevention of ill-thrift and deaths due to cobalt deficiency in sheep and cattle.

Less common is the use of cobalt for the prevention of chronic phalaris poisoning, known as phalaris staggers.

This condition is well known in eastern Australia, but only isolated cases have been recorded in W.A. no doubt due to the relatively small area sown to phalaris in this state.

Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop Jan 1966

Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop

A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The fact that characteristic crystalline products result upon the diffusion of arsenate ions into silicic acid gel which has been impregnated with stannous ions has been known by the Pacific Chemistry Department for some time. The optimum conditions with regards to heat and hydrogen ion concentration have been determined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the products of the reaction. First to determine whether or not the silicic acid itself combined with the stannous and arsenate. ions in the formation of the crystalline product, and second to determine its chemical composition.
