Zinc–Phosphorus Clusters For Solution Synthesis Of Zinc Phosphide Nanoparticles, Kyungseop Lee
Zinc–Phosphorus Clusters For Solution Synthesis Of Zinc Phosphide Nanoparticles, Kyungseop Lee
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Synthesis of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) nanoparticles is an emerging topic of investigation as Zn3P2 is a candidate material for the next generation solar cells. Despite the early discovery of its favorable electronic properties that are well-suited for photovoltaic applications, a major focus of synthetic strategy was with vapor/chemical deposition methods. Solution methods with greater control over size, crystal structure and composition at a lower production cost, has been underdeveloped in comparison. In this context, this thesis describes the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of zinc phosphido clusters: [Zn2(μ-PPh2)2(PPh …
A Library Of Coumarin-Enaminone Chemodosimeters For The Detection Of Analytes, Aaron Berrell Davis
A Library Of Coumarin-Enaminone Chemodosimeters For The Detection Of Analytes, Aaron Berrell Davis
Dissertations
Many anions and metal ions are of biological and environmental importance. This work describes our attempts to synthesize molecular probes to specifically target cyanide, zinc, cadmium and mercury as these species can often result in negative effects to the environment and the human body.
The work in this dissertation, describes the synthesis of a family of coumarin-enamine chemodosimeters, in a straightforward synthetic procedure, the reaction between 7-(diethylamino)-4-hydroxycoumarin and a primary amine. The work presented in this dissertation demonstrates that these molecules can play dual roles and therefore the work is split into two distinct parts: Part 1 describes one role …
The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Reactivity Of Synthetic Ada Repair Protein Analogues, Josiah G. Elsberg
The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Reactivity Of Synthetic Ada Repair Protein Analogues, Josiah G. Elsberg
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The study of bioinorganic chemistry is an important field, as it can provide insight as to why Nature has chosen certain active sites and structures within different kinds of metalloproteins. Ada repair protein, a zinc-containing metalloprotein, is one such topic of interest. Although it is known that Ada RP is able to repair methyl-phosphotriester backbone damage by self-methylation of one of its cysteine groups, the mechanism is not fully understood. Two pathways have been proposed: a dissociative pathway where the Zn-S bond becomes a zinc/sulfur ion pair, and an associative pathway where a four ringed σ-metathesis occurs. Previous research has …
Reactions Between Zinc Metallothionein And Carbonic Anhydrase, Tyler B. J. Pinter
Reactions Between Zinc Metallothionein And Carbonic Anhydrase, Tyler B. J. Pinter
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
More than 25% of proteins require metal ion cofactors for structure or function. The interactions between metalloproteins have largely been overlooked, though these interactions ultimately govern metal localization and control metal ion homeostasis. Mammalian metallothionein (MT) is a small, cysteine-rich metalloprotein that binds numerous metal ions per protein strand. Up to seven divalent metals, such as zinc or cadmium, are wrapped into a clustered two-domain structure. This unusually high metal content places MT as an attractive candidate for studying interactions with other metal-binding proteins. This present study investigates the metal transfer reactions between MTs and other metalloproteins, using carbonic anhydrase …
Cellular Zinc Trafficking: The Zinc Proteome And Its Reactions With Cadmium, Mohammad Ali Namdarghanbari
Cellular Zinc Trafficking: The Zinc Proteome And Its Reactions With Cadmium, Mohammad Ali Namdarghanbari
Theses and Dissertations
Metals play a crucial role in living systems. Iron, zinc, copper, molybdenum, and manganese are involved in many essential biological activities. Among transition metals, zinc after iron is the most abundant transition metal in the human body and the most abundant in the brain. It exists in more than 3000 proteins, which comprise about 10% of the human proteome. Zn2+ dyshomeostasis is associated with chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes and related complications, bone loss, growth retardation in young children, and neurological and behavioral problems. Despite a good knowledge obtained for metabolism of some metal ions such as copper, …
Structural Motifs Of Novel Metallothionein Proteins, Duncan E K Sutherland
Structural Motifs Of Novel Metallothionein Proteins, Duncan E K Sutherland
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Metallothioneins (MT) are a family of small cysteine rich proteins, which have been implicated in toxic metal detoxification, protection against oxidative stress, and as a metallochaperone. The most well studied member of the family is the mammalian MT, which consists of two domains: a β-domain with 9 cysteine residues, which sequesters 3 Cd2+/Zn2+, and an α-domain with 11 cysteine residues, which sequesters 4 Cd2+/Zn2+. The exact functions of MT are unknown but must relate to its metalation status. Several areas that could lead to the assignment of function include 1) the determination …

Zinc Speculation And Ligand Fluxes In Chesapeake Bay And Elizabeth River Pore Waters, Duncan Glover Byers
Zinc Speculation And Ligand Fluxes In Chesapeake Bay And Elizabeth River Pore Waters, Duncan Glover Byers
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Presented here are the first data on the vertical concentrations, complexation, speciation, and fluxes of total dissolved zinc and zinc complexing ligands, and zinc speciation in sediment pore waters in the Chesapeake Bay and Elizabeth River, Virginia.
Sediment pore waters were collected in mid and southern Chesapeake Bay in November 1997 and in the Elizabeth River (Pinner's Point) in March, April, and July 1998. Flux experiments were conducted in Elizabeth River sediment cores in April and July 1998. [TDZn] and zinc complexation were determined using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at a hanging mercury drop electrode (DPASV-HMDE).
[TDZn] in the …
