Developing Iron Complexes For Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Generation, Benjamin Travis Dec 2021

Developing Iron Complexes For Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Generation, Benjamin Travis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Artificial photosynthesis systems convert solar energy into chemical fuels such as hydrogen gas. Photocatalytic hydrogen generation systems have previously been developed, but reliance on expensive metal catalysts limits the viability of these systems. In order for artificial photosynthesis to be used as a large-scale clean energy solution, it is crucial to discover more active and cost-efficient catalysts.

To this end, several novel iron polypyridyl complexes were synthesized using relatively inexpensive reactants. Electrochemical testing revealed that these complexes are active electrocatalysts for the reduction of protons to generate hydrogen gas. Furthermore, a naphthalene-terminated iron polypyridyl complex was found to be an …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Artificial Photosynthesis (AP) provides a promising method for the conversion of solar energy to chemical fuel in the form of H2 and O2. Development of heterogeneous systems in which H2 evolution catalysts are immobilized on metal oxide semiconductors is imperative for the large-scale implementation of AP systems. This research focuses on the immobilization of an active H2 evolution catalyst on large band gap semiconductors for the development and optimization of a highly active photocatalytic H2 generation system.

Noble Metal Free Catalysts For Hydrogen Generation From Aqueous Solutions, Dan Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The current energy crisis is becoming more and more serious due to the industrial development and increasing population. Mimicking photosynthesis in plants provides a new way to solve this crisis. The goal is to harness solar energy and convert it into energy stored in chemical bonds such as methanol or hydrogen gas. Currently, most catalysts for proton reduction contain precious metals, such as palladium, platinum and ruthenium. The main goal of our research is to develop catalysts made of earth abundant metals. By incorporating organic ligands in our complexes, we can make catalysts that have similar catalytic activity as those …

Platinized Tin Oxide: A Low-Temperature Oxidation Catalyst, Erik Joshua Kielin

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Some combinations of noble metal and reducible metal oxide possess a synergistic level of activity for the catalytic oxidation of CO at lower temperatures and partial pressures of O2 than can be obtained by either component alone. The most promising candidates, Au on MnO2 and Pt on SnO 2, were investigated for the effects on activity of noble metal loading, of reductive pretreatment at elevated temperature, and of reaction gas mixture composition. Optimum activity was obtained at a noble metal loading of 28% Au/MnO2 and 17% Pt/SnO2. Both catalysts benefitted from reductive CO pretreatment at 125??C. Both catalysts showed enhanced …
