Technology has been making it both reliable and convenient to utilize non-destructive geophysics techniques like Ground Penetration Radar, Induction current based Rebarscope, Seismic methods, ERT, etc. The applications range from shallow subsurface investigation of Bridge decks to old tunnels, mapping of rabars in a pre-existing construction and analyzing the concrete strength.
The thesis constitutes of a comparative study and analysis of a Ground Penetration Radar system and a Rebarscope. Individual parameters obtained directly from the study and obtained indirectly from the study shall be …
Variable Stress Orientations In The Offshore Nile Delta: The Role Of Salt As A Mechanical Detachment Horizon, Weicheng Zhang
Variable Stress Orientations In The Offshore Nile Delta: The Role Of Salt As A Mechanical Detachment Horizon, Weicheng Zhang
Masters Theses
"The offshore Nile Delta is characterized by variations of the maximum horizontal stress orientation in subsalt and supra-salt sequences. Margin-parallel SH, typical for tertiary deltas, is observed for regions that are below or do not contain evaporites. In sequences underlain by evaporates pre-dominantly margin-normal SH is observed. This observation yielded the first conclusive in situ evidence that salt acts as a mechanical detachment layer. In this study, 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is used to simulate the total stress distribution in the offshore Nile Delta featuring evaporate sequences. Several parameters such as different salt sequence geometries, friction coefficient on faults, …
Seismic Anisotropy And Mantle Dynamics Beneath The Southeastern United States Inferred From Shear-Wave Splitting Analysis, Yunhua Liu
Masters Theses
"Systematic spatial variations of mantle azimuthal anisotropy are revealed by over 3000 pairs of high-quality shear-wave splitting parameters (fast polarization orientations and splitting times) recorded at ~400 USArray and other network stations in the SE United States (75⁰-90⁰ W, and 24⁰-40⁰ N). The fast polarization orientations observed in the continental interior are subparallel to the absolute plate motion (APM) direction of the North American plate with apparent larger-than-normal splitting times, indicating a significant asthenospheric contribution. Fast orientations parallel to the edge of the North American craton are revealed along the southern and eastern margins of the continent. A portion of …
Avon Alkaline Igneous Province, Missouri: Characterization Of Subcontinental Mantle Source And Evolution Via Chemical Analysis Of Olivine, Zachary William Freeman
Avon Alkaline Igneous Province, Missouri: Characterization Of Subcontinental Mantle Source And Evolution Via Chemical Analysis Of Olivine, Zachary William Freeman
Masters Theses
"This article presents the crystallization age of, and composition of olivine phenocrysts within an alnoite of, the Avon Alkaline Igneous Province (AAIP) of Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. The AAIP is an ultramafic igneous province consisting of approx. 80 known intrusives of diverse lithology and texture. 40Ar/39 Ar geochronology indicates an emplacement age of 386 +/- 1 Ma, which establishes the AAIP as the only known Devonian-age ultramafic igneous body in the Midwestern U.S. Study of the AAIP provides a unique opportunity to characterize the Devonian-age subcontinental mantle and the processes that generated the suite of ultramafic rocks present …
Late Ordovician Tectonism In The North American Midcontinent: Constraints From U-Pb Detrital Zircon Geochronology, Daniel Nathan Meehan I
Late Ordovician Tectonism In The North American Midcontinent: Constraints From U-Pb Detrital Zircon Geochronology, Daniel Nathan Meehan I
Masters Theses
"Numerous sandstone filled depressions hosted in upper Cambrian to Middle Ordovociain dolostones in south-central Missouri have historically been identified as Pennsylvanian paleokarst structures. U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology is at odds the time of formation and sedimentological evidence challenges their classification. "Filled sink" deposits yield primary zircon age populations of 2.8-2.6 Ga (~50% of all analyzed grains), 1.2-1.1 Ga (~25%), 1.8-1.6 Ga (~15%) and 1.5-1.3 Ga (~10%). These zircon populations most likely originated from the Superior Craton and Midcontinent Rift and/or Grenville orogen, respectively. The Warrensburg and Moberly channel-fill sandstones of central Missouri were identified as good candidates for Pennsylvanian aged …
Pricing Of Geometric Asian Options In General Affine Stochastic Volatility Models, Johannes Ruppert
Pricing Of Geometric Asian Options In General Affine Stochastic Volatility Models, Johannes Ruppert
Masters Theses
"In this thesis, we look at the general affine pricing model introduced in [11]. This model allows to price geometric Asian options, which are of big interest due to their lower volatility in comparison to, for example, European options. Because of their structure and in order to be able to price these options, we look at the basic theory of Lévy processes and stochastic calculus. Furthermore, we provide the detailed description of the parameters of the pricing formulas for some popular specific single-factor stochastic volatility models with jumps and generalize the approach of [11] to multi-factor models"--Abstract, page iii.
Empirical Likelihood And Differentiable Functionals, Zhiyuan Shen
Empirical Likelihood And Differentiable Functionals, Zhiyuan Shen
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Empirical likelihood (EL) is a recently developed nonparametric method of statistical inference. It has been shown by Owen (1988,1990) and many others that empirical likelihood ratio (ELR) method can be used to produce nice confidence intervals or regions. Owen (1988) shows that -2logELR converges to a chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom subject to a linear statistical functional in terms of distribution functions. However, a generalization of Owen's result to the right censored data setting is difficult since no explicit maximization can be obtained under constraint in terms of distribution functions. Pan and Zhou (2002), instead, study the …
Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi
Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In this dissertation, first we consider the problem of testing homogeneity and order in a contaminated normal model, when the data is correlated under some known covariance structure. To address this problem, we developed a moment based homogeneity and order test, and design weights for test statistics to increase power for homogeneity test. We applied our test to microarray about Down’s syndrome. This dissertation also studies a singular Bayesian information criterion (sBIC) for a bivariate hierarchical mixture model with varying weights, and develops a new data dependent information criterion (sFLIC).We apply our model and criteria to birth- weight and gestational …
Statistical Methods For Handling Intentional Inaccurate Responders, Kristen J. Mcquerry
Statistical Methods For Handling Intentional Inaccurate Responders, Kristen J. Mcquerry
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In self-report data, participants who provide incorrect responses are known as intentional inaccurate responders. This dissertation provides statistical analyses for address intentional inaccurate responses in the data.
Previous work with adolescent self-report, labeled survey participants who intentionally provide inaccurate answers as mischievous responders. This phenomenon also occurs in clinical research. For example, pregnant women who smoke may report that they are nonsmokers. Our advantage is that we do not solely have self-report answers and can verify responses with lab values. Currently, there is no clear method for handling these intentional inaccurate respondents when it comes to making statistical inferences.

Continuous Time Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data, Lijie Wan
Continuous Time Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data, Lijie Wan
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Continuous-time multi-state models are widely used in modeling longitudinal data of disease processes with multiple transient states, yet the analysis is complex when subjects are observed periodically, resulting in interval censored data. Recently, most studies focused on modeling the true disease progression as a discrete time stationary Markov chain, and only a few studies have been carried out regarding non-homogenous multi-state models in the presence of interval-censored data. In this dissertation, several likelihood-based methodologies were proposed to deal with interval censored data in multi-state models.
Firstly, a continuous time version of a homogenous Markov multi-state model with backward transitions was …

Statistical Inference On Dynamical Systems, Hongyuan Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
The ordinary differential equation (ODE) is one representative and popular tool in modeling dynamical systems, which are widely implemented in physics, biology, economics, chemistry and biomedical sciences, etc. Because of the importance of dynamical systems in scientific studies, they are the main focuses of my dissertation.
The first chapter of the dissertation is introduction and literature review, which mainly focuses on numerical integration algorithms of ODEs that are difficult to solve analytically, as well as derivative-free optimization algorithms for the so-called inverse problem.
The second chapter is on the estimation method based on numerical solvers of differential equations. We start …
Statistical Methods For Environmental Exposure Data Subject To Detection Limits, Yuchen Yang
Statistical Methods For Environmental Exposure Data Subject To Detection Limits, Yuchen Yang
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In this dissertation, we develop unified and efficient nonparametric statistical methods for estimating and comparing environmental exposure distributions in presence of detection limits. In the first part, we propose a kernel-smoothed nonparametric estimator for the exposure distribution without imposing any independence assumption between the exposure level and detection limit. We show that the proposed estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed estimator performs well in practical situations. A colon cancer study is provided for illustration. In the second part, we develop a class of test statistics to compare exposure distributions between two groups by using …
Aggregated Quantitative Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction, Rebecca E. Crouch
Aggregated Quantitative Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction, Rebecca E. Crouch
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
We consider the problem of making predictions for quantitative phenotypes based on gene-to-gene interactions among selected Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Previously, Quantitative Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction (QMDR) has been applied to detect gene-to-gene interactions associated with elevated quantitative phenotypes, by creating a dichotomous predictor from one interaction which has been deemed optimal. We propose an Aggregated Quantitative Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction (AQMDR), which exhaustively considers all k-way interactions among a set of SNPs and replaces the dichotomous predictor from QMDR with a continuous aggregated score. We evaluate this new AQMDR method in a series of simulations for two-way and three-way interactions, …
Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang
Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
This paper intend to develop novel statistical methods to improve genomic data analysis, especially for differential analysis. We considered two different data type: NanoString nCounter data and somatic mutation data. For NanoString nCounter data, we develop a novel differential expression detection method. The method considers a generalized linear model of the negative binomial family to characterize count data and allows for multi-factor design. Data normalization is incorporated in the model framework through data normalization parameters, which are estimated from control genes embedded in the nCounter system. For somatic mutation data, we develop beta-binomial model-based approaches to identify highly or lowly …

Modification Of The Fundamental Properties Of Light Through Interaction With Nanostructured Materials, David W. Keene Ii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of photonics has been growing rapidly over the last few decades as it has endeavored to harness the potential of nanostructured materials to utilize the energy and momentum of electromagnetic radiation on the nanoscale. Using metal nanostructures provides the ability to take advantage of the sub-field of plasmonics which holds the promise of opening the world to vast increases in computational power by circumventing the limitations of conventional current that plague today’s processors. With a thorough understanding of this subject we also get one step closer to increasing the efficiency of solar technology, developing a finer scale of …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Dicopper(Ii) Complexes With Biological Relevance, Ashley E. Hall
Synthesis And Characterization Of Dicopper(Ii) Complexes With Biological Relevance, Ashley E. Hall
Masters Theses
The research discussed in this study focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new model complexes that mimic the type-3 enzyme, catechol oxidase, which oxidizes catechols to their corresponding quinones. Our approach focused on the design and synthesis new model complexes that contain a dicopper(II) center that can be fine-tuned in a variety of ways, such as sterics and exogeneous bridging molecules. This method allows a multitude of complexes to be created and compared to determine how the overall structure affects the catecholase activity of the complexes.
Two ligands were synthesized; they contain a phenolate body, two amide groups, …
Flag F-Vectors Of Polytopes With Few Vertices, Sarah A. Nelson
Flag F-Vectors Of Polytopes With Few Vertices, Sarah A. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
We may describe a polytope P as the convex hull of n points in space. Here we consider the numbers of chains of faces of P. The toric g-vector and CD-index of P are useful invariants for encoding this information. For a simplicial polytope P, Lee defined the winding number wk in a Gale diagram corresponding to P. He showed that wk in the Gale diagram equals gk of the corresponding polytope. In this dissertation, we fully establish how to compute the g-vector for any polytope with few vertices from its …
New Perspectives Of Quantum Analogues, Yue Cai
New Perspectives Of Quantum Analogues, Yue Cai
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In this dissertation we discuss three problems. We first show the classical q-Stirling numbers of the second kind can be expressed more compactly as a pair of statistics on a subset of restricted growth words. We extend this enumerative result via a decomposition of a new poset which we call the Stirling poset of the second kind. The Stirling poset of the second kind supports an algebraic complex and a basis for integer homology is determined. A parallel enumerative, poset theoretic and homological study for the q-Stirling numbers of the first kind is done. We also give a bijective …
In Search Of A Class Of Representatives For Su-Cobordism Using The Witten Genus, John E. Mosley
In Search Of A Class Of Representatives For Su-Cobordism Using The Witten Genus, John E. Mosley
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In algebraic topology, we work to classify objects. My research aims to build a better understanding of one important notion of classification of differentiable manifolds called cobordism. Cobordism is an equivalence relation, and the equivalence classes in cobordism form a graded ring, with operations disjoint union and Cartesian product. My dissertation studies this graded ring in two ways:
1. by attempting to find preferred class representatives for each class in the ring.
2. by computing the image of the ring under an interesting ring homomorphism called the Witten Genus.
Homogenization Of Stokes Systems With Periodic Coefficients, Shu Gu
Homogenization Of Stokes Systems With Periodic Coefficients, Shu Gu
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In this dissertation we study the quantitative theory in homogenization of Stokes systems. We study uniform regularity estimates for a family of Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish interior Lipschitz estimates for the velocity and L∞ estimates for the pressure as well as Liouville property for solutions in ℝd. We are able to obtain the boundary W{1,p} estimates in a bounded C1 domain for any 1 < p < ∞. We also study the convergence rates in L2 and H1 of Dirichlet and Neumann problems for Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, without any regularity assumptions on the coefficients.
Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri
Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
A new neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) experiment was proposed to be commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The underlying theme of this experiment (first conceived by Golub and Lamoreaux in 1994) is the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The discovery of a non-zero nEDM would be of revolutionary importance to physics, with the discovery of such providing for evidence for new-beyond-the-Standard-Model physics required for a resolution to the unresolved puzzle of why the universe is dominated by matter, as …
Elastic Compton Scattering From Deuterium Near 100 Mev, Khayrullo Shoniyozov
Elastic Compton Scattering From Deuterium Near 100 Mev, Khayrullo Shoniyozov
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Tagged photons from 81 to 116 MeV were used to measure elastic Compton scat- tering cross sections from deuterium and carbon targets at the MAX-lab facility in Lund. Scattered gamma rays were detected in three very large NaI(Tl) crystals with sufficient energy resolution to isolate deuterium elastic yields at scattering angles of 60°, 90°, 120° and 150°. Calculations indicate that back-angle Compton scattering on deuterium in this energy range is sensitive to the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon. Results of this research were obtained with improved beam tagging system conditions compared to previous elastic Compton scattering experiments from …
Biolabeling Through The Use Of Water-Soluble Colloidal Quantum Dots, Cody Stombaugh
Biolabeling Through The Use Of Water-Soluble Colloidal Quantum Dots, Cody Stombaugh
Honors Projects
Nanomaterials continues to be a growing field of study due to their wide range of potential applications. Quantum dots are artificially synthesized crystalline clusters of atoms able to confine electron motion as a result of their incredibly small size. Recently, medical applications of nanomaterials have expanded greatly. Quantum dots are ideal for biolabeling due to their rather narrow photoluminescence emission peaks. By synthesizing quantum dots of a specific diameter, it is possible to predetermine the peak photoluminescence wavelength of a sample. Through ligand exchange and immunoconjugation of the quantum dots with proteins, it is possible to use the quantum dots …
Immune Gene Variation And Susceptibility To Upper Respiratory Tract Disease In Gopher Tortoises, Jean Pierre Elbers
Immune Gene Variation And Susceptibility To Upper Respiratory Tract Disease In Gopher Tortoises, Jean Pierre Elbers
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The immune system defends the host from bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. The immune system is partially under genetic control through immune response genes, such as those of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) whose nucleotide variation influences the host’s ability to recognize foreign pathogens and can influence disease susceptibility. Populations of threatened species generally possess low levels of genetic variation, and genetically depauperate hosts may be at greater risk of infectious disease contributing to extirpations because they also possess low immunogenetic variation. My dissertation examines the relationship between immunogenetic variation and disease susceptibility and the factors that influence innate immune …
Turning Waste Into Compost In Napa, California, Liana D. Solis
Turning Waste Into Compost In Napa, California, Liana D. Solis
Pomona Senior Theses
Two significant pieces of legislation in California have mandated that cities and counties must reduce their waste streams. Assembly Bill 341 establishes that California must divert 75% of its waste from landfills by the year 2020. The first bill that included composting, Assembly Bill 1826, was passed in 2014 and requires that commercial users enact composting beginning in 2016. These initiatives have led cities and counties to seek ways of implementing composting programs. Using the City of Napa as a case study, this thesis argues that a composting program can be integrated into any existing waste hauling service. Although there …
Impacts Of Recreational Aviation On Wildlife: The Physiological Stress Response In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Associated User Perceptions, Devin W. Landry
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Recreational aviation on public lands may negatively impact wildlife. However, land-use decisions need to balance user need with wildlife impact. We know very little about 1) how back country airstrip use affects local wildlife, or 2) attitudes and perceptions of recreational pilots toward possible management actions. For my Master’s research, I investigated how aircraft activity influenced physiological measures of stress in white-tailed deer, while also modeling how psychometrics such as wildlife attitudes and place attachment predict the willingness of recreational pilots engage in impact-mitigating behaviors. I measured physiological stress through non-invasive sampling of stress hormones in fecal samples (fecal glucocorticoid …
Twisted Reflection Positivity, Mostafa Ahmad Hayajneh
Twisted Reflection Positivity, Mostafa Ahmad Hayajneh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Reflection positivity has several applications in both mathematics and physics. For example, reflection positivity induces a duality between group representations. In this thesis, we coin a new definition for a new kind of reflection positivity, namely, twisted reflection positive representation on a vector space. We show that all of the non-compactly causal symmetric spaces give rise to twisted reflection positive representations. We discover examples of twisted reflection positive representations on the sphere and on the Grassmannian manifold which are not unitary, namely, the generalized principle series with the Cosine transform as an intertwining operator. We give a direct proof for …
Fundamental Studies Of Humic Acid's Influence On Pollutant Toxicity To Aquatic Organisms, Rachel Dawn Deese
Fundamental Studies Of Humic Acid's Influence On Pollutant Toxicity To Aquatic Organisms, Rachel Dawn Deese
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The main purpose of the research presented in this dissertation was to further understand the intricate and convoluted interactions between natural organic material, biological entities, and pollutants. This was achieved by utilizing humic acids (HAs) from differing sources, chemically modified humic acid, two biological entities (model biomembranes and Artemia Franciscana), and three types of pollutants (cations, surfactants, and carbon nanotubes). Fluorescence spectroscopy and model biomembranes were used to measure the change in HA’s ability to interact with the biomembranes in the presence of cations. Three differently sourced HAs, chemical modified HAs, and a range of cations were studied to elucidate …
Thiol-Acrylate Polymerization Kinetics And Applications In Microfluidics, Michael Perrin Tullier
Thiol-Acrylate Polymerization Kinetics And Applications In Microfluidics, Michael Perrin Tullier
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The reaction kinetics and some applications in the field of microfluidics for thiol-acrylate Michael addition polymerizations using multifunctional monomers have been researched and are presented here. The polymerization rate constants for base-catalyzed systems were found to increase with increasing thiol and acrylate functionality, which was attributed to the intramolecular interactions between functional groups. The nucleophile-initiated thiol-acrylate Michael addition polymerization kinetics were monitored via FTIR, and it was determined that the increase in the rate of reaction in these multifunctional systems was significantly less dramatic than the increase observed in monofunctional systems. While no radical polymerization was observed during most typical …
Comparing The Regio- And Enantioselectivity Of Inverting Versus Retaining Epoxide Hydrolases, Mark A. Aliwalas
Comparing The Regio- And Enantioselectivity Of Inverting Versus Retaining Epoxide Hydrolases, Mark A. Aliwalas
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) are enzymes that catalyze the ring opening of an epoxide, yielding a vicinal diol. This exciting class of enzymes is often associated with natural product and small molecule biosynthesis. One interesting class of natural products that epoxide hydrolases are involved in the biosynthesis of is the enediynes. Previously, 5 enediyne-associated epoxide hydrolases have been characterized, revealing an inverting-versus-retaining paradigm for enediyne epoxide hydrolases. The work described herein sets the table for future studies involving the probing of the α/β-epoxide hydrolase mechanism for styrene oxide. Kinetic and regioselectivity characterization of the enediyne-associated CynF and SghF has determined that …
