Hybrid Inorganic Core- Conjugated Polymer Shell Nanoparticles Prepared By Surface-Initiated Polymerization, Sourav Chatterjee Jan 2016

Hybrid Inorganic Core- Conjugated Polymer Shell Nanoparticles Prepared By Surface-Initiated Polymerization, Sourav Chatterjee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hybrid core-shell nanoparticles have attracted attention due to their unique characteristics which combine properties of the inorganic core and organic shell in a way that generates new properties which do not exist for the two individual parts. This makes them promising candidates for the design of stimuli-responsive materials, chemo- and biosensors, and various biomedical applications. In this dissertation research, we designed and prepared a series of hybrid environmentally responsive nanoparticles where fluorescent block copolymers, including various combinations of polythiophene (PT), poly(p-phenylene) (PPP), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polyallene (PA), were grafted on the surface of inorganic nanoparticles using surface-confined Kumada catalyst-transfer polymerization. …

Complexity Theory And Its Applications In Linear Quantum Optics, Jonathan Olson Jan 2016

Complexity Theory And Its Applications In Linear Quantum Optics, Jonathan Olson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis is intended in part to summarize and also to contribute to the newest developments in passive linear optics that have resulted, directly or indirectly, from the somewhat shocking discovery in 2010 that the BosonSampling problem is likely hard for a classical computer to simulate. In doing so, I hope to provide a historic context for the original result, as well as an outlook on the future of technology derived from these newer developments. An emphasis is made in each section to provide a broader conceptual framework for understanding the consequences of each result in light of the others. …

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón Jan 2016

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the kinematic properties of intracontinental deformation during short geologic time scales. Using three case studies this work characterizes active deformation at varying spatial scales within the continental interior of Eurasia. The far-field effect of the Cenozoic Indo-Asia collision is the driving force controlling deformation within the Eurasian continental interior. Active deformation across the intracontinental Tian Shan range challenges the plate tectonic model that proposes crustal deformation is concentrated along plate boundaries. This work further constrains the active kinematics of intracontinental motion that is necessary to understand the dynamics of the Eurasian intracontinental system. The two standing …

Coastal Ecosystem Resiliency After Major Disturbances, Giovanna Mcclenachan Jan 2016

Coastal Ecosystem Resiliency After Major Disturbances, Giovanna Mcclenachan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Disturbances are a common occurrence in coastal ecosystems and can provide opportunity for adaptation and renewal in healthy systems; hurricanes bring mineral accretion to a marsh, floods provide a pulse of freshwater and nutrients to estuaries, and fires increase species diversity and abundance in forests. Humans, however, have depleted the resiliency of many coastal systems via top down and bottom up mechanisms, leaving these ecosystems more vulnerable to both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Louisiana’s wetlands have been modified for centuries via canals, levees, agricultural impoundments, etc., leading to a decreased resiliency to land loss. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill …

Peptidomimetic Polymers: Advances In Monomer Design And Polymerization Methods, Brandon Andrew Chan Jan 2016

Peptidomimetic Polymers: Advances In Monomer Design And Polymerization Methods, Brandon Andrew Chan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of polypeptide and polypeptoid polymers. The former are composed of amino acid repeat units and possess intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions allowing for the self-assembly into well-defined secondary structures (e.g. α-helix). Polypeptoids are based on N-alkyl substituted glycine and lack intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, resulting in enhanced proteolytic stability and thermal processability. Physicochemical properties of polypeptoids are strongly dependent on the side chain structures, allow for control of the solubility, crystallinity, and conformation of the polymers. Well-defined polypeptides and polypeptoids are synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of their corresponding N-carboxyanhydride …

Structure And Dynamics Of Layered Transition Metal Compounds Driven By Broken Symmetry, Chen Chen Jan 2016

Structure And Dynamics Of Layered Transition Metal Compounds Driven By Broken Symmetry, Chen Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Correlated Electron Systems have attracted attention because of their complex phase diagrams that often contain several exotic phases that cannot be understood at all with traditional ideas. This is driven by the competition between many low-lying states, competing to be the ground state. That means by tuning parameters like temperature, pressure, magnetic _x000C_field, or doping concentration, one phase would be suppressed and another emerges. These phases are in such a delicate balance that they compete and interact with each other, and experimentally we can always find a way to alter this balance. In this work, two systems have been investigated: …

Temporal Dynamics Of Benthic Responses To Habitat Disturbance In Coastal Plain Headwaters Of Southwestern Louisiana, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy Jan 2016

Temporal Dynamics Of Benthic Responses To Habitat Disturbance In Coastal Plain Headwaters Of Southwestern Louisiana, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Weak biotic responses to habitat gradients within Northern Gulf of Mexico streams have been attributed to spatial and temporal variability. Landscape and in-stream habitat descriptions are presented for watersheds within Pleistocene terraces of the Coastal Plains geomorphic province of Louisiana, USA. Geologic influences on stream habitat were inferred by comparing multivariate ordinations on physicochemical measurements between terraces. Seasonal variability was assessed during a drought year (2011) and a typical water year (2013). Within coastal plains of Louisiana, stream condition was more similar within terraces than within river basins. Permutational MANOVA models indicated significantly different stream habitat between Uplands and Prairie, …

Biomedical Applications Of Thiol-Acrylate Polymers, Leah Alyce Garber Jan 2016

Biomedical Applications Of Thiol-Acrylate Polymers, Leah Alyce Garber

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The development of biocompatible polymers using thiol-acrylate Michael addition reactions between not only acrylates and thiols but also between amines and acrylates were demonstrated. The synthesis of an in situ tertiary amine catalyst initiates the propagation steps of the polymerization process by subsequently reacting with trimethylolpropane tris (3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPTMP). A few notable characteristics of this reaction are tunable gel times, the capability of reaching high polymer conversion and suitable mechanical strength. With addition of hydroxyapatite to the polymeric phase and foaming, a porous bone composite was produced. Further osteogenisis and in vivo work using the PETA-co-TMPTMP (HA) composite material was …

Method Of The Riemann-Hilbert Problem For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation In A Semi-Infinite Strip, Ashar Ghulam Jan 2016

Method Of The Riemann-Hilbert Problem For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation In A Semi-Infinite Strip, Ashar Ghulam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, a new method is developed to study BVPs of the modified Helmholtz and Helmholtz equations in a semi-infinite strip subject to the Poincare type, impedance and higher order boundary conditions. The main machinery used here is the theory of Riemann Hilbert problems, the residue theory of complex variables and the theory of integral transforms. A special kind of interconnected Laplace transforms are introduced whose parameters are related through branch of a multi-valued function. In the chapter 1 a brief review of the unified transform method used to solve BVPs of linear and non-linear integrable PDEs in convex …

Arsenic Speciation And Phytoremediation Modeling For Environmental Management, Sidney Joseph Marlborough Jan 2016

Arsenic Speciation And Phytoremediation Modeling For Environmental Management, Sidney Joseph Marlborough

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Arsenic has been used throughout recorded history but during the industrial revolution widespread use led to global environmental impact. The two forms that should be considered in environment management are arsenate and arsenite. The calculations of environmental risk for arsenic exposure relies the toxicity of arsenite however, in well aeriated surface soils arsenate may be the predominate form. Ecological risk assessments based on arsenite studies will lead to restrictive remediation requirements that do not adequately reflect the level of risk. Arsenate resembles phosphate and as such has a greater affinity for phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is one of the most viable and …

Beyond The Tails Of The Colored Jones Polynomial, Jun Peng Jan 2016

Beyond The Tails Of The Colored Jones Polynomial, Jun Peng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In [2] Armond showed that the heads and tails of the colored Jones polynomial exist for adequate links. This was also shown independently by Garoufalidis and Le for alternating links in [8]. Here we study coefficients of the "difference quotient" of the colored Jones polynomial. We begin with the fundamentals of knot theory. A brief introduction to skein theory is also included to illustrate those necessary tools. In Chapter 3 we give an explicit expression for the first coefficient of the relative difference. In Chapter 4 we develop a formula of t_2, the number of regions with exactly 2 crossings …

Minimizing Decoherence In Optical Fiber For Long Distance Quantum Communication, Manish Kumar Gupta Jan 2016

Minimizing Decoherence In Optical Fiber For Long Distance Quantum Communication, Manish Kumar Gupta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this research work, I have derived analytical models for decoherence of quantum states of light and developed techniques based on Dynamical Decoupling (DD) to preserve the quantum state of polarization qubit and Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) qudit in single-mode, multi-mode and specialized optical fibers. In subsequent work, I have derived the analytical model for decoherence of an entangled state in an optical fiber to show that such a decoherence causes loss of entanglement. I also showed that such states can be preserved with DD. In Chapter 1, I have introduced the subject of a quantum computer and its relation …

Spectral Properties Of Photonic Crystals: Bloch Waves And Band Gaps, Robert Paul Viator Jr Jan 2016

Spectral Properties Of Photonic Crystals: Bloch Waves And Band Gaps, Robert Paul Viator Jr

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The author of this dissertation studies the spectral properties of high-contrast photonic crystals, i.e. periodic electromagnetic waveguides made of two materials (a connected phase and included phase) whose electromagnetic material properties are in large contrast. A spectral analysis of 2nd-order divergence-form partial differential operators (with a coupling constant k) is provided. A result of this analysis is a uniformly convergent power series representation of Bloch-wave eigenvalues in terms of the coupling constant k in the high-contrast limit k -> infinity. An explicit radius of convergence for this power series is obtained, and can be written explicitly in terms of the …

A Direct Study Of 20ne(Alpha,P)23na With The Helical Orbit Spectrometer (Helios), Jianping Lai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Type Ia Supernovae are thermonuclear explosions that occur on CO white dwarfs in binary systems, completely disrupting the system. While the exact progenitor of these events is unclear, there have been several studies exploring the nucleosynthesis that drives these stellar explosions. These studies have shown that a handful of reactions have a significant effect on Type Ia Supernova nucleosynthesis, specifically 12C(alpha, gamma), 12C+12C, 20Ne(alpha, p), 20Ne(alpha, gamma), and 30Si(p, gamma). While the 20Ne(alpha,p)23Na reaction has been shown to be one of the five most influential reactions, it has not been directly been measured at astrophysically relevant energies. We performed direct …

Feedback Control Theory In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Ashkan Balouchi Jan 2016

Feedback Control Theory In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Ashkan Balouchi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A stochastic dynamical system is a system composed of many interacting components which includes stochastic behavior. Feedback control theory is designed to use information from the current state of the system in order to temper the final state toward the desired outcome. In this dissertation, I perform studies on two choices of classic and quantum dynamical systems to cover vast variety of statistical tools and methods. For classical model, I perform a study on finite-size effects at the phase transition in the Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic model as an example of non-equilibrium many body stochastic dynamical system. For quantum mechanical model, I …

Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee Jan 2016

Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The theme of this work is time-lapse polymerizations triggered by pH clock reactions. The first chapter is the introduction and gives a long overview of the different chemistries studied here. The second chapter focuses on the bromate-sulfite clock reaction. Based on some simplified and accepted reaction equations for the bromate-sulfite clock. We presumed it may be possible to increase the pH of the solution via ammonia addition and hinder or significantly reduce the reactivity of the clock reagents, thus creating a storage stable reaction. Adding a polymer system that would not crosslink until the solution became acidic would have created …

Thin Films Of Semiconducting Polymers And Block Copolymers By Surface-Initiated Polymerization, Sang Gil Youm Jan 2016

Thin Films Of Semiconducting Polymers And Block Copolymers By Surface-Initiated Polymerization, Sang Gil Youm

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ability to control nanoscale morphology and molecular organization in organic semiconducting polymer thin films is an important prerequisite for enhancing the efficiency of organic thin-film devices, including organic light-emitting and photovoltaic devices. The current “top-down” paradigm for making such devices is based on utilizing solution-based processing (e.g. spin-casting) of soluble semiconducting polymers. This approach typically provides only modest control over nanoscale molecular organization and polymer chain alignment. A promising alternative to using solutions of pre-synthesized semiconducting polymers pursues instead a “bottom-up” approach to prepare surface-grafted semiconducting polymer thin films by surface-initiated polymerization of small-molecule monomers. This dissertation mainly focuses …

Dynamics Of Land Building And Ecological Succession In A Prograding Deltaic Floodplain, Wax Lake Delta, La, Usa, Azure Elizabeth Bevington

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deltas are globally important locations of diverse ecosystems, human settlement and economic activity that are threatened by reduced sediment delivery, accelerated sea level rise, and subsidence. In this dissertation I investigated a number of aspects of the ecosystem development over time within an actively prograding river dominated delta along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. I outlined a conceptual model of deltaic floodplain wetland establishment and succession focused on the vegetated deltaic floodplain ecosystem, which includes subtidal, intertidal and supratidal zones. This was used to guide the experimental design and statistically driven hypothesis testing in order to ascertain the validity …

Synthesis Of Functional Polypeptides And Development Of New Synthetic Strategies Toward Polypeptides, Jinbao Cao Jan 2016

Synthesis Of Functional Polypeptides And Development Of New Synthetic Strategies Toward Polypeptides, Jinbao Cao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to develop a new synthetic strategy for synthesizing advanced functional polypeptides or polypeptides in general. Polypeptides are amino acids based polymers with appealing properties for different applications. One of the key challenges in polypeptide research is the synthesis of functional polypeptides under mild conditions. We developed a system based on ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-thiocarboxyanhydrosulfides (NTAs) to synthesize polypeptides with wide range of molecular weights under mild conditions. Owing to NTAs’ good stability, our system serves as an excellent alternative to the traditional ROP of N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA). In Chapter 1, the fundamental knowledge and …

Dynamic Resonant Scattering Of Near-Monochromatic Fields, Gayan Shanaka Abeynanda Jan 2016

Dynamic Resonant Scattering Of Near-Monochromatic Fields, Gayan Shanaka Abeynanda

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Certain universal features of photonic resonant scattering systems are encapsulated in a simple model which is a resonant modification of the famous Lamb Model for free vibrations of a nucleus in an extended medium. We analyze this "resonant Lamb model" to garner information on dynamic resonant scattering of near-monochromatic fields when an extended system is weakly coupled to a resonator. The transmitted field in a resonant scattering process consists of two distinct pathways: an initial pulse (direct transmission) and a tail of slow decay (resonant transmission). The resonant Lamb model incorporates a two-part scatterer attached to an infinite string with …

Riemann-Hilbert Formalism In The Study Of Crack Propagation In Domains With A Boundary, Aleksandr Smirnov Jan 2016

Riemann-Hilbert Formalism In The Study Of Crack Propagation In Domains With A Boundary, Aleksandr Smirnov

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Wiener-Hopf technique is a powerful tool for constructing analytic solutions for a wide range of problems in physics and engineering. The key step in its application is solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem, which consists of finding a piece-wise analytic (vector-) function in the complex plane for a specified behavior of its discontinuities. In this dissertation, the applied theory of vector Riemann-Hilbert problems is reviewed. The analytical solution representing the problem on a Riemann surface, and a numerical solution that reduces the problem to singular integral equations, are considered, as well as a combination of the numerical and analytical techniques …

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For Enantiomer Separations And Biomolecular Sensors, Britney Lyn Hebert Jan 2016

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For Enantiomer Separations And Biomolecular Sensors, Britney Lyn Hebert

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) encompass a wide range of applications by changing the different components, e.g. the template, crosslinker or functional monomers. Of interest among these different applications are separations and sensors. Separations by MIPs traditionally use a chiral pure template but in some cases that chiral pure template may not be available for imprinting. Using chiral (N-α-bismethacyloyl-L-alanine) and achiral (N,O-bisacrylamide ethanolamine) crosslinkers we investigated imprinting of scalemic and racemic template mixtures of Boc-tyrosine enantiomers. The achiral and chiral crosslinkers yielded similar results for the partial separation of enantiomers by scalemic imprinted polymers because separation and recognition are not dependent …

In this research, atomic force microscope tip-enhanced laser ablation mass spectrometry (AFM TELA-MS), an ambient sub-micrometer scale sampling method for offline MS was developed. AFM TELA was used to transfer molecules from thin films to a suspended silver wire for off-line mass spectrometry using laser desorption ionization (LDI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI). An AFM with a 30 nm radius gold-coated silicon tip was used to image the sample and to hold the tip 15 nm from the surface for material removal using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, which provides output at wavelengths of 532 nm in the visible, 1064 …

Probabilistic And Deep Learning Algorithms For The Analysis Of Imagery Data, Saikat Basu Jan 2016

Probabilistic And Deep Learning Algorithms For The Analysis Of Imagery Data, Saikat Basu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Accurate object classification is a challenging problem for various low to high resolution imagery data. This applies to both natural as well as synthetic image datasets. However, each object recognition dataset poses its own distinct set of domain-specific problems. In order to address these issues, we need to devise intelligent learning algorithms which require a deep understanding and careful analysis of the feature space. In this thesis, we introduce three new learning frameworks for the analysis of both airborne images (NAIP dataset) and handwritten digit datasets without and with noise (MNIST and n-MNIST respectively). First, we propose a probabilistic framework …

Understanding the origins of intermediate mass nuclei requires accurate knowledge of nuclear reaction rates. This thesis addresses two projects targeting measurements of nuclear cross sections relevant in hot astrophysical environments. Direct measurements of neutron capture on 67Zn and 68Zn were performed using the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). A new 68Zn(n,&gamma) cross section in the neutron energy range from 150 eV to 850 keV and Maxwellian-Averaged Cross Sections from 20 keV-100 keV are presented along with the details of the analysis. These reaction rates are important for …

Geologic Extremes Of The Nw Himalaya: Investigations Of The Himalayan Ultra-High Pressure And Low Temperature Deformation Histories, Dennis Girard Donaldson Jan 2016

Geologic Extremes Of The Nw Himalaya: Investigations Of The Himalayan Ultra-High Pressure And Low Temperature Deformation Histories, Dennis Girard Donaldson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on two extremes of orogenic development in the Himalaya: the timing of early ultra-high pressure related tectonics and the subsequent emplacement of the high grade Greater Himalayan Crystallines. The Himalayan orogeny is one of if not the best example of ongoing collisional systems, marked by the ongoing convergence of the Indian and Asian continents. The presence of coesite in the Tso Morari complex respresents subduction of the Indian continental crust to ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) conditions. However, the timing of UHP metamorphism is debated, creating an uncertainty in the calculation of subduction and exhumation rates. Petrologic and geochronologic analyses …
