Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study used a retrospective practice-based research method to compare levels of internalizing and externalizing behaviors of a clinically-ascertained sample of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n=90). As measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), internalizing and externalizing behaviors were compared to normative behavior, and between boys and girls with ASD. Findings suggest that in a clinical sample, children with ASD are more likely than typically developing children to have internalizing and/or externalizing problems. No significant sex differences were found for Internalizing Problems, Externalizing Problems, or Total Problems scores on either the parent or teacher …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project reviewed: a) a summary of research articles on assessment for children who are learning English as a second language; b) a summary of research articles on intervention for children who are learning English as a second language; c) an appendix that includes assessment materials for evaluating children who speak English as a second language such as case history forms, interview questions for clients, teachers, and parents, measures of language milestones, and informal language assessment instruments, and; d) an appendix that includes evidence based treatment strategies such as vocabulary teaching methods, literacy learning strategies, and other intervention materials.
Professional Competencies For E-Helpers: A Telepractice Resource, Hannah M. Schlaak
Professional Competencies For E-Helpers: A Telepractice Resource, Hannah M. Schlaak
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
The primary purpose of this study was to craft and validate a set of core competencies necessary for an e-Helper to possess. A review of the literature guided the creation of the initial competencies. Following expert review, the competencies were revised and formatted into an online survey which was sent to respondents in four target groups: (a) school administrators who had adopted telepractice as a service delivery model; (b) SLPs experienced in telepractice within a school setting; (c) current e-Helpers, and (d) scholars experienced in telepractice. Sixty percent (21 out of 35) of the competencies were rated as “important” by …

Assessing Cognitive Abilities In High-Performing Cochlear Implant Users., Jake Hillyer, Elizabeth Elkins, Chantel Hazlewood, Stacey D Watson, Julie G Arenberg, Alexandra Parbery-Clark
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Despite being considered one of the most successful neural prostheses, cochlear implants (CIs) provide recipients with a wide range of speech perception performance. While some CI users can understand speech in the absence of visual cues, other recipients exhibit more limited speech perception. Cognitive skills have been documented as a contributor to complex auditory processing, such as language understanding; however, there are no normative data for existing standardized clinical tests assessing cognitive abilities in CI users. Here, we assess the impact of modality of presentation (i.e., auditory-visual versus visual) for the administration of working memory tests in high-performing CI users …

Hablando De La Herida: Honoring Spanish-Speaking Parents’ Experiences Obtaining School-Based Speech And Language Services For Their Children, Amalia W. Hernández
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the experiences of Spanish-speaking Latino/a parents in their attempts to obtain school-based speech and language services for their children; the impact of these experiences on parents; and parent perspectives on how school-based speech-language pathologists can co-create collaborative relationships. Through a detailed analysis of a focus group and individual interviews of 31 Spanish-speaking parents of children in the REAAD! (Reaching Educational Achievement and Development) Literacy Enrichment Program at a university in Los Angeles, California, this study provided a space for parents to share their experiences and offer insights regarding what shaped their experiences. Through the theoretical lens of …
