Improving Education In Primary Care: Development Of An Online Curriculum Using The Blended Learning Model, Betzi L. Bateman, Linda O. Lewin, Mamta Singh, Pamela B. Glover
Betzi L. Bateman
Background: Standardizing the experiences of medical students in a community preceptorship where clinical sites vary by geography and discipline can be challenging. Computer-assisted learning is prevalent in medical education and can help standardize experiences, but often is not used to its fullest advantage. A blended learning curriculum combining web-based modules with face-to-face learning can ensure students obtain core curricular principles.
Methods: This course was developed and used at The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and its associated preceptorship sites in the greater Cleveland area. Leaders of a two-year elective continuity experience at the Case Western Reserve …
The Effect Of Medical Students' International Experiences On Attitudes Toward Serving Underserved Multicultural Populations, Michael A. Godkin, Judith A. Savageau
The Effect Of Medical Students' International Experiences On Attitudes Toward Serving Underserved Multicultural Populations, Michael A. Godkin, Judith A. Savageau
Judith A. Savageau
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effect of international electives on the attitudes of preclinical and clinical-year medical students with respect to serving underserved multicultural populations. METHODS: A self-assessment instrument was used to measure attitudes of 146 students before and after participating in international electives. The same attitudinal items were also analyzed at two time intervals for 18 students who completed international electives as preclinical students and 76 class cohorts who did not. RESULTS: Analyses show that the effect of international experiences is different for preclinical students and clinical students. For both groups, however, these experiences can develop and support perceptions and …
The Effect Of A Global Multiculturalism Track On Cultural Competence Of Preclinical Medical Students, Michael A. Godkin, Judith A. Savageau
The Effect Of A Global Multiculturalism Track On Cultural Competence Of Preclinical Medical Students, Michael A. Godkin, Judith A. Savageau
Judith A. Savageau
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effect of an elective (the Global Multiculturalism Track), including international and domestic immersion experiences, on the cultural competence of preclinical medical students. METHODS: A self-assessment instrument was used to measure cultural competence, and it was administered to Track participants and nonparticipating class cohorts at the beginning and the end of the preclinical years. RESULTS: Track participants (n=26) had a higher level of cultural competence both at the beginning and at the end of the program. At the end of their second year, students participating in the Track had, for the first time, greater knowledge of certain …
Mastering The Biomedical Literature: Preparing For Learning-Centered Practice, Jolene Miller, Marlene Porter
Mastering The Biomedical Literature: Preparing For Learning-Centered Practice, Jolene Miller, Marlene Porter
Jolene M. Miller
Because of the volume of available information and incredibly busy schedules, physicians require a high degree of skill in accessing, evaluating, and organizing information for efficient retrieval and reuse. The Mastering the Biomedical Literature elective (a two-week elective) in the University of Toledo's College of Medicine is designed to equip students with core information skills in support of clinical decision-making and lifelong learning. Content, skills, and issues that were selected for the elective were based on the types of questions received at the Mulford Library from third- and fourth-year medical students and resident physicians. Content selection was also driven by …
Empathy As A Hermeneutic Practice, Ellen S. More
Empathy As A Hermeneutic Practice, Ellen S. More
Ellen S. More
This essay will argue for the centrality of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship-as a core of ethically sound, responsible therapeutics. By "empathy," I intend an explicitly hermeneutic practice, informed by a reflexive understanding of patient and self. After providing an overview of the history of the concept of empathy in clinical medicine, I discuss current definitions and the use of Balint groups in residency training as a way to develop empathic competence in novice physicians.
Does Undergraduate Student Research Constitute Scholarship? Drawing On The Experiences Of One Medical Faculty, Michelle Mclean, F Howarth
Does Undergraduate Student Research Constitute Scholarship? Drawing On The Experiences Of One Medical Faculty, Michelle Mclean, F Howarth

While undergraduate research has been part of the learning culture in some disciplines for many years, it is only more recently that it is being included into mainstream medical curricula. Undergraduate medical students at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, have several opportunities to undertake research during their studies, both locally and abroad. Following a documentary analysis of curricular and extra-curricular research over the past five years, supervised undergraduate student research activities and outcomes were compared with published criteria for scholarship and were judged to meet the standards. Suggestions for improved productivity relating to student …

Medical education has evolved to become a discipline in its own right. With demands on medical faculties to be socially responsible and accountable, there is now increasing pressure for the professionalisation of teaching practice. Developing a cadre of professional and competent teachers, educators, researchers and leaders for their new roles and responsibilities in medical education requires faculty development. Faculty development is, however, not an easy task. It requires supportive institutional leadership, appropriate resource allocation and recognition for teaching excellence. This guide is designed to assist those charged with preparing faculty for their many new roles in teaching and education in …

An Ethnographic Study Of The Social Context Of Migrant Health In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD
Background
Migrant workers in the United States have extremely poor health. This paper aims to identify ways in which the social context of migrant farm workers affects their health and health care.
Methods and Findings
This qualitative study employs participant observation and interviews on farms and in clinics throughout 15 months of migration with a group of indigenous Triqui Mexicans in the western US and Mexico. Study participants include more than 130 farm workers and 30 clinicians. Data are analyzed utilizing grounded theory, accompanied by theories of structural violence, symbolic violence, and the clinical gaze. The study reveals that farm …
