Background: In many states, family medicine residencies and medical schools compete clinically for patients, educationally for trainees and, more recently, for community preceptors (CPs). As Wisconsin’s medical schools and health care systems have expanded their geographic footprints, our CPs now teach trainees from competing institutions. Yet residency and medical student accrediting bodies require faculty and preceptor development.

Background: Performing common procedures in our family medicine residency clinics is often a difficult and inefficient process. A 2008 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine consensus statement on procedural training found higher job satisfaction and better financial compensation for family practitioners who performed procedures. Patient satisfaction is likely increased when minor procedures are able to be performed by their primary clinician. This would suggest a disconnect between the known benefits of providing procedural services and the ability of our residency clinics to provide those services in an efficient manner. Background: All trainees entering family medicine residency training programs after June 1, 2012, must complete the same American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements as practicing physicians. BACKGROUND: Up to 60% of practicing physicians report symptoms of burnout, which often peak during residency. Residency is also a relevant time for habits of self-care and resiliency to be emphasized. A growing literature underscores the importance of this; however, evidence about effective burnout prevention curriculum during residency remains limited.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impact of a new, 1-month wellness curriculum for 12 second-year family medicine residents on burnout, empathy, stress, and self-compassion.

CLI (Rutherford class IV-VI) is a terminal stage of peripheral artery disease (PAD); it is defined by the presence of resting pain and/or tissue loss for at least two weeks that may require urgent revascularization to promote healing and prevent limb loss.For patients with infrarenal aortoiliac occlusive disease, the revascularization options are surgery like aortofemoral bypass and axillofemoral bypass or percutaneous intervention. Aortoiliac and aortofemoral bypass procedures are associated with 74% to 95% 5-year patency rates, respectively, which are comparable but not superior to percutaneous therapies.These operations may imply a significant morbidity and mortality on CLI patients who usually have …

Aim: The present study developed and evaluated a patient-centred, patient-directed, group-based education program for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Two frameworks, the Medical Research Council (MRC) framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions and the RE-AIM framework were followed. Data to develop the intervention were sourced from scoping of the literature and formative evaluation. Program evaluation comprised analysis of primary recruitment of participants through general practitioners, baseline and end-point measures of anthropometry, four validated questionnaires, contemporaneous facilitator notes and telephone interviews with participants. Medical students from both Duke-NUS and NUS participated in a study that attempted to assess their knowledge structure in the medical immunology domain. Students had to perform a sorting task with a list of concepts derived from immunology experts. Background: The student-run clinic (SRC) has the potential to address interprofessional learning among
health professions students.
Purpose: To derive a framework for understanding student learning during team-based care provided in an
interprofessional SRC serving underserved patients.
Methods: The authors recruited students for a focus group study by purposive sampling and snowballing.
They constructed two sets of semi-structured questions for uniprofessional and multiprofessional groups.
Sessions were audiotaped, and transcripts were independently coded and adjudicated. Major themes about

We read with disbelief about a newly graduated pharmacist dispensing 30 times the amount of injectable sodium bicarbonate intended, an error that led to a patient’s death.1 As clinicians, we wondered what clinical scenario might mandate the large amount of sodium bicarbonate dispensed—the answer was none. So why did the pharmacist dispense it? The answer is all too clear: With rare exceptions, institutional pharmacists nationwide are largely focused on dispensing. Postgraduate clinical training in the basic aspects of pharmacotherapy is scarce and not viewed as essential. Observation is a key step preceding diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment. Careful patient observation is a skill that is learned but rarely explicitly taught. Furthermore, proper clinical observation requires more than a glance; it requires attention to detail. In medical school, the art of learning to look can be taught using the medical humanities and especially visual arts such as paintings and film. Research shows that such training improves not only observation skills but also teamwork, listening skills, and reflective and analytical thinking. Biomedical programs have a potential treasure trove of data they can mine to assist admissions committees in identification of students who are likely to do well and help educational committees in the identification of students who are likely to do poorly on standardized national exams and who may need remediation. The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth understanding of ''What had happened to the urban minority female athletes who became pregnant while playing high school basketball?'' The study wanted to provide a qualitative analysis of rich narrative data collected from questionnaire interviews of two separate groups (one in Pittsburgh, the other in New York City). The findings of this study suggest that in fact urban female African-Americans athletes still received benefits from sports participation.

Background: We noted a low reported prevalence of delirium (3%) in hospitalized older patients at a community teaching hospital in north central Wisconsin.

Purpose: This was a quality improvement project to report recognition of delirium by nurses before and after an educational intervention.

Methods: This project was performed on one medical unit in our hospital. Quality improvement data was collected at baseline and after the educational intervention. Data collected included observation by a geriatrician attending weekly interdisciplinary rounds to note any mention by nurses of delirium or confusion.
