Graduate Students’ Perceptions Of Written Feedback At A Private University In Pakistan, Lubna Ghazal, Raisa B. Gul, Mehnaz Hanzala, Tansy Jessop, Ambreen Tharani
Graduate Students’ Perceptions Of Written Feedback At A Private University In Pakistan, Lubna Ghazal, Raisa B. Gul, Mehnaz Hanzala, Tansy Jessop, Ambreen Tharani
Ambreen Tharani
Excellence in academic performance at the graduate level requires good command of writing skills. Teachers’ written feedback can help students to develop their writing skills. However, several personal and contextual factors may influence feedback processes and its utilization by students. Therefore, understanding these factors is essential to improve the practice of written feedback. This study aimed to appraise the quality of written feedback in the graduate programmes and to ascertain students’ perceptions about it at a private university in Pakistan. A purposive sample of 15 participants comprised the study. The data were collected through in-depth students’ interviews and the teachers’ …
Delirium Recognition In Hospitalized Older Patients: A Quality Improvement Project, Jodi Punke, Ariba Khan, Michael L. Malone
Delirium Recognition In Hospitalized Older Patients: A Quality Improvement Project, Jodi Punke, Ariba Khan, Michael L. Malone
Aurora Geriatrics Fellows
Background: We noted a low reported prevalence of delirium (3%) in hospitalized older patients at a community teaching hospital in north central Wisconsin. Purpose: This was a quality improvement project to report recognition of delirium by nurses before and after an educational intervention. Methods: This project was performed on one medical unit in our hospital. Quality improvement data was collected at baseline and after the educational intervention. Data collected included observation by a geriatrician attending weekly interdisciplinary rounds to note any mention by nurses of delirium or confusion. The patient’s electronic health record (EHR) was reviewed to note delirium assessment …

Mentoring Program Design And Implementation In New Medical Schools, A. Fornari, T. S. Murray, A. W. Menzin, V. A. Woo, M. Clifton, M. Lombardi, S. Shelov
Alice Fornari
Purpose: Mentoring is considered a valuable component of undergraduate medical education with a variety of programs at established medical schools. This study presents how new medical schools have set up mentoring programs as they have developed their curricula. Methods: Administrators from 14 US medical schools established since 2006 were surveyed regarding the structure and implementation of their mentoring programs. Results: The majority of new medical schools had mentoring programs that varied in structure and implementation. Although the programs were viewed as valuable at each institution, challenges when creating and implementing mentoring programs in new medical schools included time constraints for …
Bias In The Eyes Of Resident Physicians, Abel H. Irena, Kern A. Reid, Richard Battiola, Anthony Cáceres
Bias In The Eyes Of Resident Physicians, Abel H. Irena, Kern A. Reid, Richard Battiola, Anthony Cáceres
Aurora Internal Medicine Faculty
Background: The utilization of patient characteristics can allow health care providers to arrive at diagnosis or decide on treatment options; however, the subjective nature of patient characterization can negatively affect patient care. A 2003 Institute of Medicine report, called Unequal Treatment, recognized that bias or stereotyping may affect provider-patient communication or the care offered. Purpose: To investigate residents’ recognition of bias in an inpatient care setting. Methods: In order to explore the topic of bias among providers, we elected to indirectly assess its recognition among providers by asking their opinion in an anonymous manner about their fellow residents. This, we …

Did You Hear What I Meant To Say?, Dennis J. Baumgardner
Dennis J. Baumgardner, MD
The author introduces Volume 4, Issue 1 of Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews by acknowledging the importance of communication between patient and caregiver in the clinical setting. Failure to communicate effectively can have a negative impact on a patient's well-being, therefore efforts to improve communication skills among clinicians, researchers and health practice administrators should be undertaken with regularity.

Do Coursework Summative Assessments Predict Clinical Performance? A Systematic Review, Rebecca Terry, Wayne Hing, Robin Orr, Nikki Milne
Do Coursework Summative Assessments Predict Clinical Performance? A Systematic Review, Rebecca Terry, Wayne Hing, Robin Orr, Nikki Milne
Dr Nikki Milne
BACKGROUND:
Two goals of summative assessment in health profession education programs are to ensure the robustness of high stakes decisions such as progression and licensing, and predict future performance. This systematic and critical review aims to investigate the ability of specific modes of summative assessment to predict the clinical performance of health profession education students.
METHODS:
PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, ERIC and EMBASE databases were searched using key terms with articles collected subjected to dedicated inclusion criteria. Rigorous exclusion criteria were applied to ensure a consistent interpretation of 'summative assessment' and 'clinical performance'. Data were extracted using a pre-determined format …

A Qualitative Study Exploring High School Students' Understanding Of, And Attitudes Towards, Health Information And Claims, Leila Cusack, Laura N Desha, Chris B Del Mar, Tammy C Hoffmann
Christopher Del Mar
BACKGROUND:
Exposure to health claims, particularly in the media and social media, is pervasive, and the information conveyed is often inaccurate, incomplete or misleading. Some young people of high school ages are already making decisions about using readily available health interventions (such as sports drinks and beauty products).Although previous research has assessed adults' understanding of health claims, no research has examined this issue in young adults who are attending high school.
OBJECTIVE:
To explore high school students' understanding of, and attitudes towards, concepts relevant to assessing health information and claims.
DESIGN:
A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with 27 Australian …
