An ionic liquid (IL) assisted solvothermal method is employed to prepare single phase, oxygen free, hexagonal NaGdF4:Eu3+ (2 mol%) nanorods with a visible quantum efficiency of 187%. In contrast, for mixed materials containing cubic and hexagonal NaGdF4:Eu3+, the quantum efficiency is much less (127%). Thus, synthesis parameters have to be carefully chosen in order to get the high performance hexagonal material. Not only the influence of the IL but also of the Gd : F ratio during synthesis as well as the temperature were studied. Recently we developed an access to metal- and metal-oxide colloids based on thermal evaporation of metals into ionic liquids (ILs). Here we present systematic studies on the long-time stability of gold and copper nanoparticles (NPs) in different ILs. The influence of metal concentration and temperature on the ripening of the as-prepared gold NPs in different ILs was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis absorption measurements. Short alkyl chain-length-methyl-imidazolium salts with weakly coordinating perfluorinated counter anions (PF6, BF4 or Tf2N, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide) were found to be better stabilizers compared to ILs with cations bearing long alkyl chains (trihexyltetradecylphosphonium, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium) and …

Bimetallic 15 nm Pd-core Rh-shell Rh1−x Pd x nanoparticle catalysts have been synthesized and studied in CO oxidation by NO. The catalysts exhibited composition-dependent activity enhancement (synergy) in CO oxidation in high NO pressures. The observed synergetic effect is attributed to the favorable adsorption of CO on Pd in NO-rich conditions. The Pd-rich bimetallic catalysts deactivated after many hours of oxidation of CO by NO. After catalyst deactivation, product formation was proportional to the Rh molar fraction within the bimetallic nanoparticles. The deactivated catalysts were regenerated by heating the sample in UHV. The linear dispersion relation for longwave surface perturbations, as derived by Levine et al. Phys. Rev. B 75, 205312 (2007) is extended to include a smooth surface energy anisotropy function with a variable anisotropy strength (from weak to strong, such that sharp corners and slightly curved facets occur on the corresponding Wulff shape). Through detailed parametric studies it is shown that a combination of a wetting interaction and strong anisotropy, and even a wetting interaction alone results in complicated linear stability characteristics of strained and unstrained films.

Inorganic luminescent materials (phosphors) find widespread scientific and industrial applications. For potential applications, nanoscale phosphors are favored because of the reduced scattering and the possibility to miniaturize devices. In such materials, the optical behavior is strongly dependent on impurities or defects in the crystal lattice, so that a well-defined reaction protocol with fixed parameters is compulsory to ensure the quality of the obtained material. Nanotechnology is a generic term referring diverse research contexts, technologies and application domains. We present two case studies illustrating the diversity of research as well as the technological issues associated with scaling pilot/lab based operations to industrial/commercial levels. We demonstrate the utility of lean principles such as the Six-Sigma methodology in addressing technological issues pertaining to diverse Nanotechnology related contexts by discussing the applicability of lean principles to the two cases discussed.

In his article on the National Citizens' Technology Forum (NCTF) in this chapter, Cobb notes that the NCTF was essentially a decendant of the "consensus conference," a form of political engagement that originated in Denmark and then traveled elsewhere. Voltage Impulse Induced Bistable Magnetization Switching In Multiferroic Heterostructures, Tianxiang Nan

We report on voltage impulse induced reversible bistable magnetization switching in FeGaB/lead zirconate titanate (PZT) multiferroic heterostructures at room temperature. This was realized through strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling between ferroelectric PZT and ferromagnetic FeGaB layer. Two reversible and stable voltage-impulse induced mechanical strain states were obtained in the PZT by applying an electric field impulse with its amplitude smaller than the electric coercive field, which led to reversible voltage impulse induced bistable magnetization switching. These voltage impulse induced bistable magnetization switching in multiferroic heterostructures provides a promising approach to power efficient bistable magnetization switching that is crucial for information storage.

Environmental, health, and safety (EHS) concerns are receiving considerable attention in nanoscience and nanotechnology (nano) research and development (R&D). Policymakers and others have urged that research on nano's EHS implications be developed alongside scientific research in the nano domain rather than subsequent to applications. This concurrent perspective suggests the importance of early understanding and measurement of the diffusion of nano EHS research. The paper examines the diffusion of nano EHS publications, defined through a set of search terms, into the broader nano domain using a global nanotechnology R&D database developed at Georgia Tech.
