Investigation Of Subgrid-Scale Mixing In Turbulent Plane Jets And Turbulent Jet Flames, Shuaishuai Liu Dec 2014

Investigation Of Subgrid-Scale Mixing In Turbulent Plane Jets And Turbulent Jet Flames, Shuaishuai Liu

All Dissertations

The subgrid-scale (SGS) mixing of mixture fraction, temperature, and species mass fraction in turbulent partially premixed (Sandia) flames is studied. We focus on the effects of the SGS mixing regimes and the spatial relationships among the scalars on the SGS mixing of the species mass fractions. High resolution lines images are used to obtain the scalar filtered mass density function and the conditionally filtered diffusion. The results show that for small SGS variance the scalar fields have a relatively simple structure. For large SGS variance the structure is more complex. The spatial relationships among the scalars result in different SGS …

Carbon Black Mediated Conductive Polymer Composite, Mohamed Hussein Faris Ali Dec 2014

Carbon Black Mediated Conductive Polymer Composite, Mohamed Hussein Faris Ali

Theses

The central goal of this thesis is to produce electrically conductive nanocomposites made out of carbon black obtained from waste tires as filler into a polymeric matrix. Waste tires are discarded in substantial numbers on a daily basis, posing a significant environmental concern. By weight, about 25-35% of a tire is carbon black. Pyrolysis is a convenient and environmental friendly process to produce carbon black from tires. Due to carbon black’s low density, high electrical conductivity and economic feasibility, this thesis investigates the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites that utilizes carbon black particles as fillers. As a result of its modified …

Low Speed Water Tunnel Testing, John J. Taylor Dec 2014

Low Speed Water Tunnel Testing, John J. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Water tunnels are ideal for studying flow patterns for hydrodynamic effects. The functionality of the University of Texas-Pan American water tunnel was limited by not being able to measure forces and moments corresponding to flow patterns. This report delivers an experimental set-up for calibrating the velocity of the water and development of a load measuring system to relate simultaneous visual investigation. An in-depth parts breakdown of the SST-model pump and the dye injection system for flow visualization will be reviewed. Few balances have been made for water tunnels due to small and difficult to measure flow-induced forces. The motive is …

The composite material underwent durometer, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, heat transfer, hysteresis, dynamic modulus, creep, tensile, abrasion, and electrical conductivity testing to characterize its properties and predict behavior. The motivation for this research is to develop an elastomer pad that is an electrically …

Thermo-Mechanical Characterization Of Glass And Its Effect On Predictions Of Stress State, Birefringence And Fracture In Precision Glass Molded Lenses, Dhananjay Joshi Dec 2014

Thermo-Mechanical Characterization Of Glass And Its Effect On Predictions Of Stress State, Birefringence And Fracture In Precision Glass Molded Lenses, Dhananjay Joshi

All Dissertations

The Precision Glass Molding (PGM) process was established as an economical and sustainable option for the production of aspherical glass optics to satisfy the increased industrial demand. Applications of precision molded aspherical lenses range from consumer electronics products such as cell phone cameras to defense and medical systems. An aspherical lens can eliminate the spherical and optical aberrations as compared to a spherical lens thus making the lens system more compact and lighter. In spite of being a clean and environmentally friendly process, the lens molding operation suffers from a few drawbacks such as lens profile deviation, stress birefringence/refractive index …

Mitigation Of Moving Shocks In An Expanding Duct, Veraun Chipman Dec 2014

Mitigation Of Moving Shocks In An Expanding Duct, Veraun Chipman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Inviscid flow theory governs the bulk motion of a gas at some distance away from the walls (i.e. outside the boundary layer). That is to say, there are no viscous forces in the bulk flow, which is modeled using the Euler equations. The Euler equations are simply the Navier-Stokes equations with zero viscosity terms. An ideal inviscid fluid, when brought into contact with a surface or wall, would naturally slip right past it since the fluid has no viscosity. In real life, however, a thin boundary layer forms between the wall or surface and the bulk flow. Shock wave boundary …

Designing A Biomimetic Testing Platform For Actuators In A Series-Elastic Co-Contraction System, Ryan Tyler Schroeder Dec 2014

Designing A Biomimetic Testing Platform For Actuators In A Series-Elastic Co-Contraction System, Ryan Tyler Schroeder

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Actuators determine the performance of robotic systems at the most intimate of levels. As a result, much work has been done to assess the performance of different actuator systems. However, biomimetics has not previously been utilized as a pretext for tuning a series elastic actuator system with the purpose of designing an empirical testing platform. Thus, an artificial muscle tendon system has been developed in order to assess the performance of two distinct actuator types: (1) direct current electromagnetic motors and (2) ultrasonic rotary piezoelectric motors. Because the design of the system takes advantage of biomimetic operating principles such as …

Modeling And Testing Of Bistable Waterbomb Base Configurations, Brandon Holbrook Hanna Dec 2014

Modeling And Testing Of Bistable Waterbomb Base Configurations, Brandon Holbrook Hanna

Theses and Dissertations

Origami is making an impact in engineering as solutions to problems are being found by applying origami principles (eg. flat-foldability) and using specific crease patterns as inspiration. This thesis presents an in-depth analysis of a particular origami fold -- the waterbomb base -- to facilitate its use in future engineering problems. The watebomb base is of interest due to its familiarity to the origami community, simple topology (can be made by folding a single sheet of paper four times), scalability, generalizability, and interesting kinetic behavior. It can behave as a nonlinear spring as well as a one- or two-way bistable …

Investigating The Relationship Between High Temperature Flow Stress And Friction Stir Weldability In Hsla Steels, David Jordan Walser Dec 2014

Investigating The Relationship Between High Temperature Flow Stress And Friction Stir Weldability In Hsla Steels, David Jordan Walser

Theses and Dissertations

The feed rate at which a defect free friction stir weld can be run (friction stir weldability) on an HSLA steel plate can vary widely between heats that meet the same specified physical properties. Consequently, every time a new heat of HSLA steel is obtained, exploratory welds must be run to determine the proper feed rate for that plate. Previous research suggests that the varying levels of alloying elements related to high temperature physical properties between the different heats causes the observed change in friction stir weldability. Because of this, it was hypothesized that the high temperature physical properties of …

A Variable-Stiffness Compliant Mechanism For Stiffness-Controlled Haptic Interfaces, Jeffrey C. Hawks Dec 2014

A Variable-Stiffness Compliant Mechanism For Stiffness-Controlled Haptic Interfaces, Jeffrey C. Hawks

Theses and Dissertations

In this research a variable-stiffness compliant mechanism was developed to generate variable force-displacement profiles at the mechanisms coupler point. The mechanism is based on a compliant Roberts straight-line mechanism, and the stiffness is varied by changing the effective length of the compliant links with an actuated slider. The variable-stiffness mechanism was used in a one-degree-of-freedom haptic interface to demonstrate the effectiveness of varying the stiffness of a compliant mechanism. Unlike traditional haptic interfaces, in which the force is controlled using motors and rigid links, the haptic interface developed in this work displays haptic stiffness via the variable-stiffness compliant mechanism. The …

Investigation Of Transmission Loss Through Double Wall Structures With Varying Small Air Gaps Using Modal Analysis., Richard Michael Phillips 1988- Dec 2014

Investigation Of Transmission Loss Through Double Wall Structures With Varying Small Air Gaps Using Modal Analysis., Richard Michael Phillips 1988-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Noise reduction testing is completed for two single steel plate constructions with different thicknesses and for two double wall constructions with different air gap thicknesses that include the same two plates used in the single plate constructions. Results compare favorably with known theory and experimental results from previous literature. These favorable comparisons include the direct relationship between mass per unit area and transmission loss for single plate constructions, the presence of a noise reduction valley near the mass-air-mass frequency, the dependency of the mass-air-mass frequency on the air gap thickness, and the existence of a bridge frequency. Despite the similarities …

Transient Heat Transfer Between A Magnetocaloric Packed Particle Bed And Stagnant Interstitial Fluid., Michael G. Schroeder 1988- Dec 2014

Transient Heat Transfer Between A Magnetocaloric Packed Particle Bed And Stagnant Interstitial Fluid., Michael G. Schroeder 1988-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of magnetocaloric heat pumps, many system models have been made. What most of these models lack is heat transfer occurring while there is no fluid motion. It is the objective of this paper to analytically determine and experimentally verify heat transfer with no bulk fluid motion. The addition of a pure dwell period to the typical magnetocaloric cycle was shown to have a positive performance impact in specific conditions. These conditions correspond to regenerators that are heat transfer rate limited in operation. The heat transfer mechanism for this particular case was shown to be pure conduction via …

Two-Dimensional Scalar Differential Equations For Transversely Varying Thickness Modes In Piezoelectric Plates And Applications In Acoustic Wave Resonator Sensors, Huijing He Dec 2014

Two-Dimensional Scalar Differential Equations For Transversely Varying Thickness Modes In Piezoelectric Plates And Applications In Acoustic Wave Resonator Sensors, Huijing He

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Generalizations are made for three types of well-known and widely used twodimensional scalar differential equations in the literature describing transversely varying thickness modes in piezoelectric plate resonators. They are for singly-rotated quartz plates, doubly-rotated quartz plates, and plates of crystals of class 6mm with the c-axis along the plate thickness, respectively. The purpose of the generalizations is to include the effects of surface mechanical loads such as mass layers or fluids for resonator -based acoustic wave sensor applications. Surface acoustic impedance is introduced to take into account various surface loads in a general manner for time-harmonic motions. Both unelectroded and …

This paper describes the design, analysis, and testing of a large-displacement monolithic compliant rotational hinge, called the Flex-16. The Flex-16 achieves 90 of rotation from monolithic construction and is aimed for application as a compliant satellite deployment hinge. Five prototypes were fabricated from three different materials (polypropylene, titanium, and a carbon nanotube framework) on two different size scales (macro and micro). A parametric finite element model was created to rapidly analyze a variety of design identified during a configuration study. Prototypes were tested for their ability to reach 90 of rotation without failure or self collision, and for their nonlinear …

Characterization Of Smoothness In Wrist Rotations, Layne Hancock Salmond Dec 2014

Characterization Of Smoothness In Wrist Rotations, Layne Hancock Salmond

Theses and Dissertations

Smoothness is a hallmark of healthy movement and has the potential to be used as a marker of recovery in rehabilitation settings. While much past research has focused on shoulder and elbow movements (reaching), little is known about movements of the wrist despite its importance in everyday life and its impairment in many neurological and biomechanical disorders. Our current lack of knowledge regarding wrist movement prevents us from improving current models, diagnosis, and treatment of wrist disorders. In particular, while movement smoothness is a well-known characteristic of reaching movements and may potentially be used to diagnose and monitor recovery from …

A Hybrid Method For Sensitivity Optimization With Application To Radio-Frequency Product Design, Abraham Lee Dec 2014

A Hybrid Method For Sensitivity Optimization With Application To Radio-Frequency Product Design, Abraham Lee

Theses and Dissertations

A method for performing robust optimal design that combines the efficiency of experimental designs and the accuracy of nonlinear programming (NLP) has been developed, called Search-and-Zoom. Two case studies from the RF and communications industry, a high-frequency micro-strip band-pass filter (BPF) and a rectangular, directional patch antenna, were used to show that sensitivity optimization could be effectively performed in this industry and to compare the computational efficiency of traditional NLP methods (using fmincon solver in MATLAB R2013a) and they hybrid method Search-and-Zoom. The sensitivity of the BPF's S11 response was reduced from 0.06666 at the (non-robust) nominal optimum to 0.01862 …

Engineering Analysis In Imprecise Geometric Models, Riccardo Gasparini Dec 2014

Engineering Analysis In Imprecise Geometric Models, Riccardo Gasparini

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Engineering analysis in geometric models has been the main if not the only credible/reasonable tool used by engineers and scientists to resolve physical boundaries problems. New high speed computers have facilitated the accuracy and validation of the expected results. In practice, an engineering analysis is composed of two parts; the design of the model and the analysis of the geometry with the boundary conditions and constraints imposed on it.

Numerical methods are used to resolve a large number of physical boundary problems independent of the model geometry. The time expended due to the computational process are related to the imposed …

Light Field Imaging Applied To Reacting And Microscopic Flows, Jonathon Remy Pendlebury Dec 2014

Light Field Imaging Applied To Reacting And Microscopic Flows, Jonathon Remy Pendlebury

Theses and Dissertations

Light field imaging, specifically synthetic aperture (SA) refocusing is a method used to combine images from an array of cameras to generate a single image with a narrow depth of field that can be positioned arbitrarily throughout the volume under investigation. Creating a stack of narrow depth of field images at varying locations generates a focal stack that can be used to find the location of objects in three dimensions. SA refocusing is particularly useful when reconstructing particle fields that are then used to determine the movement of the fluid they are entrained in, and it can also be used …

Experiment And Simulation Of The Acoustic Signature Of Fatigued-Cracked Gears In A Two-Stage Gearbox, Matthew James Ostiguy Dec 2014

Experiment And Simulation Of The Acoustic Signature Of Fatigued-Cracked Gears In A Two-Stage Gearbox, Matthew James Ostiguy

Master's Theses

This thesis focuses on the development of a health monitoring system for gearbox transmissions. This was accomplished by developing and understanding a two-stage gearbox computer model that emulates an actual gearbox test rig. The computer model contains actual gearbox geometry, flexible shafts, bearings, gear contact forces, input motor torque, output brake torque, and realistic gearbox imbalance. The gear contact force of each gear stage and the input bearing translational acceleration were the main outputs compared between a healthy gearbox and damaged gearbox computer model. The damage of focus was a fatigue crack on the input pinion gear. A sideband energy …

Analysis And Optimization Of The Scheffler Solar Concentrator, Simone Alberti

Master's Theses

The Scheffler reflector is a new solar concentrator design which maintains a fixed focus while only having a single axis tracking mechanism. This design makes the construction and operation of high temperature solar concentrators accessible to developing nations. In this project, I wrote computer simulation codes to better understand the dynamics and the effect of deformation or deviations from ideal conditions in order to define necessary manufacturing and operational tolerances. These tools and knowledge drove the prototyping of new reflector concepts by myself and other students on my team. A fiberglass prototype was able to drive the cost of a …

Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson Dec 2014

Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson

Master's Theses

Packed-bed digesters are an alternative to covered lagoon digesters for methane production and anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters such as dairy barn flush water. The physical media of packed-beds retain biofilms, often allowing increased treatment rates. Previous studies have evaluated several types of media for digestion of dilute wastewaters, but cost and media fouling have setback commercial development. A major operational cost has been effluent recirculation pumping.

In the present effort, a novel approach to anaerobic digestion of flush dairy water was developed at pilot-scale: broken walnut shells were used as a low-cost packed-bed medium and effluent recirculation was replaced …

Validation Of A Modified Parallel Compressor Model For Prediction Of The Effects Of Inlet Swirl On Compressor Performance And Operability, Reggie Floyd Dec 2014

Validation Of A Modified Parallel Compressor Model For Prediction Of The Effects Of Inlet Swirl On Compressor Performance And Operability, Reggie Floyd

Masters Theses

Engine inlet distortion complications have plagued the turbine engine development community for decades, and engineers have developed countless methods to identify and combat the harmful effects of inlet distortion. One such type of distortion that has gained much attention in recent years is known as inlet swirl, which results in a significant flow angularity at the face of the engine. This flow angularity can affect the pressure rise and flow capacity of the fan or compressor, and subsequently affect compressor and engine performance.

Previous modeling and simulation efforts to predict the effect inlet swirl can have on fan and compressor …

Design And Model Of The Frame For Hagrid (Hybrid Array Of Gamma Ray Detectors), Santiago Munoz Dec 2014

Design And Model Of The Frame For Hagrid (Hybrid Array Of Gamma Ray Detectors), Santiago Munoz

Masters Theses

Transfer reactions in inverse kinematics have provided critical information in the study of exotic nuclei. However, transfer reactions with charged particles suffer from poor resolution. The measurement of gamma-rays offers several advantages: they provide not only good resolution in measurements but also other information about the nuclei like lifetimes of unstable states. The combination of these two methods would be the ideal situation to gather information about nuclear structure.

HAGRiD, which stands for The Hybrid Array of Gamma Ray Detectors, is a LaBr3(Ce) [lanthanum bromide crystal with a cerium activator] scintillation array to measure gamma rays from transfer reactions and …

A Model Of The Diurnal Variation In Lake Surface Temperature, Jonathan L. Hodges Dec 2014

A Model Of The Diurnal Variation In Lake Surface Temperature, Jonathan L. Hodges

All Theses

Satellite measurements of water surface temperature can benefit several environmental ap-plications such as predictions of lake evaporation, meteorological forecasts, and predictions of lake overturning events, among others. However, limitations on the temporal resolution of satellite mea-surements restrict these improvements. A model of the diurnal variation in lake surface temperature could potentially increase the effective temporal resolution of satellite measurements of surface tem-perature, thereby enhancing the utility of these measurements in the above applications. Herein, a one-dimensional transient thermal model of a lake is used in combination with surface tempera-ture measurements from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the …

Studies In Small Scale Thermal Convection, Daniel F. Stranges Nov 2014

Studies In Small Scale Thermal Convection, Daniel F. Stranges

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The effect of non-Fourier heat transfer and partial-slip boundary conditions in Rayleigh-Bénard are analyzed theoretically. Non-Fourier fluids possess a relaxation time that reflects the delay in the response of the heat flux to a change in the temperature gradient while the partial slip boundary condition assumes that the fluid velocity and temperature are not equal to that of the wall. Both non-Fourier and partial-slip effects become important when small-scale heat transfer applications are investigated such as convection around micro- and nano-devices as suggested by the extended heat transport equations from kinetic theory. Other applications are also known to exhibit one …

Free-Standing Inflatable Solar Chimney: Experiment And Theory, Peter Vorobieff, Andrea Mammoli, Nima Fathi, Vakhtang Putkaradze Nov 2014

Free-Standing Inflatable Solar Chimney: Experiment And Theory, Peter Vorobieff, Andrea Mammoli, Nima Fathi, Vakhtang Putkaradze

Nima Fathi

Solar chimneys (or solar updraft towers) offer an attractive way to use solar energy for production of baseload power. In a power plant of this type, sunshine heats the air under a wide greenhouse-like roofed collector surrounding the central base of a tall chimney. The heated air drives an updraft flow through the tower, whose energy is harvested with turbines. For a sufficiently large plant of this type, the thermal mass of the heated ground under the collector is sufficient to drive the flow even when the sun is down. The primary challenge in building the solar chimney power plant …
