Mems Based Microneedle Actuator With Piezoresistive Force Feedback System For Biomedical Applications, Innovative Research Publications Irp India, Ashen Wijesiri, Y.W.R. Amarasinghe

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

This paper presents a novel design of MEMS based microneedle actuator with force feedback system which can be used for biomedical applications such as cell manipulation, drug delivery and DNA injection. The actuation mechanism of microneedle is driven by two electrostatic comb actuators. Since the manipulated objects are very sensitive, and can be easily damaged, it’s essential to have a force feedback system in the micro actuator to avoid unnecessary deformations. Piezoresistive sensing elements are used for the force feedback of the system. The proposed system was simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics software considering the anisotropic material properties and the nonlinear …

Field Monitoring Of Rail Squats Using 3d Ultrasonic Mapping Technique, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Makoto Ishida

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Rail squats and studs are typically classified as the propagation of any cracks that have grown longitudinally through the subsurface. Some of the cracks could propagate to the bottom of rails transversely, which have branched from the initial longitudinal cracks with a depression of rail surface. The rail defects are commonly referred to as ‘squats’ when they were initiated from damage layer caused by rolling contact fatigue, and as ‘studs’ when they were associated with white etching layer caused by the transform from pearlitic steel due to friction heat generated by wheel sliding or excessive traction. Such above-mentioned rail defects …

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

Free Vibrations Of Interspersed Railway Track Systems In Three-Dimensional Space, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alex M. Remennikov, Akira Aikawa, Hirotaka Sakai Apr 2014

Free Vibrations Of Interspersed Railway Track Systems In Three-Dimensional Space, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alex M. Remennikov, Akira Aikawa, Hirotaka Sakai

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Statistically, the actual loading conditions for railway tracks are rather dynamic and transient. The dynamic loadings due to train and track interactions redistribute from the rails to the rail pad, from the rail pad to the railway sleeper, and from the railway sleeper to the underlying ground. Commonly, railway sleeper in track systems is modeled as a beam on elastic foundation. This study makes use of a calibrated finite element model of railway sleepers in a track system, in order to investigate the resonant frequencies and associated mode shapes of railway components in interspersed track systems. The numerical model takes …

Dynamic Responses Of Railway Bridge Ends: A Systems Performance Improvement By Application Of Ballast Glue/Bond, Sakdirat Kaewunruen Apr 2014

Dynamic Responses Of Railway Bridge Ends: A Systems Performance Improvement By Application Of Ballast Glue/Bond, Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Accelerated deterioration of railway bridge approaches often induces downtime or restricted railway operation; and importantly causes more frequent maintenance, which is costly and time-consuming. Such deterioration is believed to occur because of high dynamic impact loading from: the difference of stiffness between the railway track and the bridge; and the poor condition of the track support at the bridge ends. The abrupt change in track stiffness often causes accelerated degradation of the track geometry and components and poor ride quality, demanding higher maintenance. There are a number of improvement programs that have been implemented in order to provide a smooth …

This paper is focused on the performance of worm gears influenced by the position of the contact pattern. By decreasing in size of the contact pattern area the lubricant film thickness between worm and worm wheel teeth will be decreased and lubricant temperature as a criterion for worm gears performance will be increased. In this experiment by designed tests, the effect of Contact Pattern Position of the Worm Wheel Teeth on the Lubricant Temperature behavior had been investigated. By considering the performed studies on statistical results of the amount of percentage of contact area in every tooth of under experiment …

Monitoring In-Service Performance Of Fibre-Reinforced Foamed Urethane Sleepers/Bearers In Railway Urban Turnout Systems, Sakdirat Kaewunruen Mar 2014

Monitoring In-Service Performance Of Fibre-Reinforced Foamed Urethane Sleepers/Bearers In Railway Urban Turnout Systems, Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called \'railway turnout\'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction …

Design Of A Passive Exoskeleton Spine, Haohan Zhang Jan 2014

Design Of A Passive Exoskeleton Spine, Haohan Zhang

Haohan Zhang

In this thesis, a passive exoskeleton spine was designed and evaluated by a series of biomechanics simulations. The design objectives were to reduce the human operator’s back muscle efforts and the intervertebral reaction torques during a full range sagittal plane spine flexion/extension. The biomechanics simulations were performed using the OpenSim modeling environment. To manipulate the simulations, a full body musculoskeletal model was created based on the OpenSim gait2354 and “lumbar spine” models. To support flexion and extension of the torso a “push-pull” strategy was proposed by applying external pushing and pulling forces on different locations on the torso. The external …

Mahendra Varman Munusamy (M. Varman)

This paper deals with the performance and emission analysis of a multicylinder diesel engine using biodiesel along with an in-depth analysis of the engine heat losses in different subsystems followed by the energy balance of all the energy flows from the engine. Energy balance analysis allows the designer to appraise the internal energy variations of a thermodynamic system as a function of ‘‘energy flows’’ across the control volume as work or heat and also the enthalpies associated with the energy flows which are passing through these boundaries. Palm and coconut are the two most potential biodiesel feed stocks in this …
