On The Application Of Mechanical Vibration In Robotics-Assisted Soft Tissue Intervention, Iman Khalaji
On The Application Of Mechanical Vibration In Robotics-Assisted Soft Tissue Intervention, Iman Khalaji
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Mechanical vibration as a way of transmitting energy has been an interesting subject to study. While cyclic oscillation is usually associated with fatigue effect, and hence a detrimental factor in failure of structures and machineries, by controlled transmission of vibration, energy can be transferred from the source to the target. In this thesis, the application of such mechanical vibration in a few surgical procedures is demonstrated.
Three challenges associated with lung cancer diagnosis and treatment are chosen for this purpose, namely, Motion Compensation, tumor targeting in lung Needle Insertion and Soft Tissue Dissection:
- A robotic solution is proposed …
Make Or Buy Analysis Model Based On Tolerance Design To Minimize Manufacturing Cost And Quality Loss, Cucuk Nur Rosyidi, Reza Rizkichani Akbar, Wakhid Ahmad Jauhari
Make Or Buy Analysis Model Based On Tolerance Design To Minimize Manufacturing Cost And Quality Loss, Cucuk Nur Rosyidi, Reza Rizkichani Akbar, Wakhid Ahmad Jauhari
Makara Journal of Technology
In a manufacturing company, manufacturing costs, or component prices, and tolerance will affect the price and the quality of a product. Companies must produce high-quality products with low manufacturing costs in order to keep their products competitive in the market; however, it is difficult to produce a high-quality product with a low manufacturing cost. Companies have difficulties in determining the components to be produced using their own manufacturing facilities (make) or outsourced to their suppliers (buy). Hence, a make or buy analysis is needed to minimize the manufacturing costs and quality loss and to determine the optimum alternative regarding make …
Articulated Spine For A Robot To Assist Children With Autism, Brandon M. Norton
Articulated Spine For A Robot To Assist Children With Autism, Brandon M. Norton
Theses and Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects about 1.5 million individuals in the US alone. The consequences of ASD affect families, caregivers, and social structures. This thesis adds to a growing group of people performing research on mitigating the effects of autism through robotics. Children with ASD tend to interact with robots more easily than with other humans. The goal of robotic therapy is not to help children interact with robots, but to generalize the behavior to humans. An articulated spine is a key to human emotional expression through shaping, weight shifting, and flow. Despite this importance, this feature is all but …
Identifying Target Properties For The Design Of Meta-Material Tank Track Pads, Venkata Sampath Dangeti
Identifying Target Properties For The Design Of Meta-Material Tank Track Pads, Venkata Sampath Dangeti
All Theses
On track vehicle systems, track pads are designed to provide traction and support the weight of the vehicle, they have limited service life due to common failure by blowout. According to the literature, blowout is a failure mode caused by overheating due to hysteresis in elastomeric materials during high speed operations. Elastomers are used primarily for their high compliance, which is essential to protect the suspension components and maintain structural integrity of the track pad. The objective of the work is to explore the use of linear elastic meta-materials with optimized topology to replace elastomers and reduce or eliminate the …
Effects Of Surface Topographies On Heat And Fluid Flows, Hadi Vafadar Moradi
Effects Of Surface Topographies On Heat And Fluid Flows, Hadi Vafadar Moradi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Responses of annular and planar flows to the introduction of grooves on the bounding surfaces have been analyzed. The required spectral algorithms based on the Fourier and Chebyshev expansions have been developed. The difficulties associated with the irregularities of the physical domain have been overcome using either the immersed boundary conditions (IBC) concept or the domain transformation method (DT).
Steady flows in annuli bounded by walls with longitudinal grooves have been studied. Analysis of pressure losses showed that the groove-induced changes can be represented as a superposition of a pressure drop due to a change in the average position of …
Estimating Passive Material Properties And Fiber Orientation In A Myocardial Infarction Through An Optimization Scheme Using Mri And Fe Simulation, Dimitri Mojsejenko
Estimating Passive Material Properties And Fiber Orientation In A Myocardial Infarction Through An Optimization Scheme Using Mri And Fe Simulation, Dimitri Mojsejenko
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Myocardial infarctions induce a maladaptive ventricular remodeling process that independently contributes to heart failure. In order to develop effective treatments, it is necessary to understand the way and extent to which the heart undergoes remodeling over the course of healing. There have been few studies to produce any data on the in-vivo material properties of infarcts, and much less on the properties over the time course of healing. In this paper, the in-vivo passive material properties of an infarcted porcine model were estimated through a combined use of magnetic resonance imaging, catheterization, finite element modeling, and a genetic algorithm optimization …
A Metrics-Based Sustainability Assessment Of Cryogenic Machining Using Modeling And Optimization Of Process Performance, Tao Lu
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
The development of a sustainable manufacturing process requires a comprehensive evaluation method and fundamental understanding of the processes. Coolant application is a critical sustainability concern in the widely used machining process. Cryogenic machining is considered a candidate for sustainable coolant application. However, the lack of comprehensive evaluation methods leaves significant uncertainties about the overall sustainability performance of cryogenic machining. Also, the lack of practical application guidelines based on scientific understanding of the heat transfer mechanism in cryogenic machining limits the process optimization from achieving the most sustainable performance.
In this dissertation, based on a proposed Process Sustainability Index (ProcSI …
Probabilistic Engineering Analysis And Design Under Time-Dependent Uncertainty, Zhen Hu
Probabilistic Engineering Analysis And Design Under Time-Dependent Uncertainty, Zhen Hu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Time-dependent uncertainties, such as time-variant stochastic loadings and random deterioration of material properties, are inherent in engineering applications. Not considering these uncertainties in the design process may result in catastrophic failures after the designed products are put into operation. Although significant progress has been made in probabilistic engineering design, quantifying and mitigating the effects of time-dependent uncertainty is still challenging. This dissertation aims to help build high reliability into products under time-dependent uncertainty by addressing two research issues. The first one is to efficiently and accurately predict the time-dependent reliability while the second one is to effectively design the time-dependent …
