In response to the ever increasing accuracies in inertial navigation systems, the U. S. Air Force must develop higher accuracy reference systems. These reference systems must also be small enough to be utilized in the testing of navigation systems onboard fighter aircraft. One such proposed system utilizes carrier-phase Global Positioning System (CPGPS) transmitters mounted on MM-9 pods with receivers on the ground. This research examines one possible method of utilizing this system to determine the attitude and position of the aircraft, given position estimates for the transmitter's locations. Fault tolerant flight control systems for combat aircraft are an alternative to excessively redundant aircraft designs or reconfigurable control laws. However, due to the range of flight conditions within a combat aircraft's operational flight envelope, the variety of its configurations, and the unavailability of an aerodynamic data base for damaged aircraft, designing fault tolerant systems is a complicated endeavor. Quantitative Feedback Theory is a robust control design technique especially well-suited to manage the structured parametric uncertainty inherent in this problem, and consequently is applied as the primary design tool for this research. The purpose of this paper was to design and analyse a federated filter design, to be used for retrofit of an Embedded GPS/INS (EGI) navigation unit into an existing Kalman filter-based air navigation system. A design was selected and simulations were conducted in the Distributed Kalman Filter Simulation software (DKFSIM). As well, a centralized Kalman filter design was simulated under identical conditions for comparison purposes. The federated filter was shown to be a feasible design, with accuracy in position and velocity very close to centralized Kalman filter values. A systematic analysis is applied to the electrical power subsystem of the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system. Results determined the most appropriate power source and conversion system Options. Photovoltaic solar arrays, the current power system, were not included in the analysis. The best electrical power subsystem options found in the analysis include a solar power source with either a dynamic or direct conversion technique, and a direct conversion nuclear source. The complexity of the design of a Global Positioning System (GPS) user segment, as well as the performance demanded of the components, depends on user requirements such as total navigation accuracy. Other factors, for instance the expected satellite/vehicle geometry or the accuracy of an accompanying inertial navigation system can also affect the user segment design. Models of GPS measurements are used to predict user segment performance at various levels. Design curves are developed which illustrate the relationship between user requirements, the user segment design, and component performance.

An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to combine the information obtained from a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) to provide a navigation solution. This research compares the results of an actual tightly-coupled GPS-INS integrated system with those obtained in computer simulation. Differences between the simulation and actual hardware results, such as navigation solutions and tuning values, are shown in the research. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the performance of the Digital Excision Temporal Filter (DETF) to reject narrowband jammers used against the Global Positioning System (GPS). The DETF takes the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the GPS signal and excises any FFT bins that are above a preselected threshold level. Then the excised signal is Inverse Fourier Transformed and fed to the GPS receiver. Several jammer types are simulated including Continuous Wave (CW), Pulse CW, Swept CW, Narrowband Spot Noise, and Wideband Barrage Noise jammers. For the U.S. Air Force to maintain an accurate and reliable Navigation Reference System (NRS) with Carrier-Phase Global Positioning System (CPGPS) measurements, it must develop an accurate and robust NRS in the face of cycle slips caused by highly dynamic maneuvers. This research investigates the implementation of a double differencing between receivers-satellites scheme to improve the accuracy of current NRS models. The removal of the 'perfect Doppler velocity aiding measurements' (a very poor assumption of past research) was completed with stable and accurate results. In an effort to quantitatively determine the utility of mission effectiveness of the KC-135, this research used value-focused thinking to measure the impact of replacing the KC-135 navigator with upgraded avionics. A Value Model was developed as a hierarchy with fundamental objectives at the highest level and attributes at the lowest level. Weights were assigned to show the contribution each level had to the one above it. The attributes were given a score and an additive model was used to determine utility with and without a navigator. The research contained in this thesis explores the concepts of Automated Formation Flight Control documented in three previous AFIT theses. The generic formation analyzed consists of a Leader and Wingman, with the Wingman referencing its maneuvers off of Leader maneuvers. Specifically, planar formation flight control concerning only heading and velocity changes is considered. Next, the vertical separation constraint is relaxed to allow wing maneuvers outside of the flight plane of the lead in order to minimize the energy expended by the wing in a maneuver. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the performance of two types of tracking loops used in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The first loop, the Delay-Lock Loop (DLL), is responsible for maintaining synchronization with the received PN sequence. The second loop, the Modified Tanlock Loop (MTLL), is responsible for maintaining synchronization with the carrier signal. The performance of the two loops is investigated first separately then their performance is evaluated when operated together. This thesis examines the application of artificial neural networks (NNs) to the problem of dynamic flight control. The specific application is the control of a flying model helicopter. The control interface is provided through a hardware and software test bed called the Fast Adaptive Maneuvering Experiment (FAME). The NN design approach uses two NNs: one trained as an emulator of the plant and the other trained to control the emulator. In order to quantify the performance and accuracy of existing navigation systems, the U.S. Air Force has been using the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumentation System (CIRIS) as a baseline. CIRIS combines information from an inertial navigation unit, a barometric altimeter, and a range/range-rate system of ground transponders to obtain a navigation solution. A controlled plant's characteristics can vary widely throughout its operational envelope. This is a major problem in nominal plant-based control system design. Hence, gain scheduling is often used for full envelop design. In this paper, it is proposed to address the plant's variability using robust control design concepts. In particular, the frequency domain based Quantitative Feedback Theory Multiple-Input Multiple-Output robust control design method is employed for the synthesis of a full envelop flight control system for an F-16 derivative. Compensators for the aircraft's pitch and lateral directional channels are designed, and the designs are validated using linear simulations.

This thesis develops an innovative approach to the design of a flight control system for performing the large-amplitude velocity vector roll maneuver at high angles of attack AOAs. A six degree of freedom aircraft model is developed from the fundamental nine-state equations of motion using a modified linearization technique. The Air Force has a requirement to quantify the force enhancement effects of military space systems, but no methodology currently exists for the measurement of their contribution to air combat outcome. This research examines the Global Positioning System GPS and models its influence on air-to-ground combat. The decision analysis technique of influence diagrams is used to identify the effects of GPS launch decisions and constellation size on the navigation accuracy available to air combatants.
