The value of a dynamic motion platform to the flight simulator is a controversial issue within the flight training community. The motion of the flight simulator platform has been shown to affect pilot performance and behavior. Moreover, its ability to provide the operator with the appropriate motion cues is essential for pilot training or research. The objectives of this study were to develop a robust protocol to measure the rate of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in isolated perfused rat lungs, as an index of oxidative stress, and to determine the cellular sources of the measured H2O2 using the extracellular probe Amplex red (AR). AR was added to the recirculating perfusate in an isolated perfused rat lung. AR’s highly fluorescent oxidation product resorufin was measured in the perfusate. A Tale Of Two Airlines: A Comparative Case Study Of High-Road Versus Low-Road Strategies In Customer Service And Reputation Management, Donna L. Roberts Ph.D., John C. Griffith Ph.D.

Does customer service - good or bad - really matter? Customer surveys from Ryanair and Southwest Airline passengers were examined to determine their perceptions on customer service for the period of 2012-2013.  Southwest Airlines (n=149) was rated significantly higher than Ryanair (n=165) in overall rating (p=.0228), seat comfort (p<.0001), cabin/staff service (p<.0001), and value (p=.0004).  Additionally, passengers would recommend Southwest Airlines at a higher rate than Ryanair (p=.0006). Open area comments emphasized that customer service and policies had a large impact on the ratings.  Specifically, 53% of Ryanair customers complained about inefficient or unwelcome processes and discourteous or unfriendly service compared …

Two high-organic-sulfur Kentucky coals, the eastern Kentucky River Gem coal and the western Kentucky Davis coal, are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), both including elemental analysis by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). From the SEM–EDS analysis, it is observed that the western Kentucky coal had areas with Pb and Cd in addition to the expected Fe and S and the eastern Kentucky coal had individual Fe–S-rich areas with La and Ni and with Si, Al, Cr, Ni, and Ti. TEM and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analyses demonstrate that anglesite with a rim of Pb-bearing amorphous …

In classic Economic Production Quantity (EPQ), an optimal batch size is determined to minimize total production cost including setup and inventory holding costs, and defective parts are not allowed. In this paper an imperfect EPQ system is studied to minimize the overall cost, where setup cost, scarp rate, batch size, and electrical power demand are determined by the model. This study aims to determine if light scatter parameters measured with spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) can accurately predict stromal, epithelial, and adipose fractions in freshly resected, unstained human breast specimens. An explicit model was developed to predict stromal, epithelial, and adipose fractions as a function of light scattering parameters, which was validated against a quantitative analysis of digitized histology slides for N  =  31 specimens using leave-one-out cross-fold validation. Specimen mean stromal, epithelial, and adipose volume fractions predicted from light scattering parameters strongly correlated with those calculated from digitized histology slides (r  =  0.90, 0.77, and 0.91, respectively, p-value× …

The objective of this research is to define the fundamental structure-property relationships of water-swollen polymer hydrogel particles that are employed as internal curing agents in cementitious mixtures, in addition to reporting a novel synthesis procedure for combining pozzolanic materials with hydrogel particles. The development of two nonlinear robust higher-order flight control systems for roll-coupled maneuvers of fighter aircraft with uncertain parameters is discussed in this article. The objective is to independently control the output variables (roll angle, pitch angle and sideslip angle) using aileron, elevator and rudder control surfaces. For a nominal model of aircraft, first a finite time stabilizing (FTS) control law, based on the notion of geometric homogeneity, is designed. Ozone in indoor environments can pose a health risk to human occupants; around half of exposure to this pollutant occurs inside buildings. One approach to reducing indoor O3 levels is to mitigate O3 as it enters a building via outdoor air ventilation supply. Often, mechanical systems that introduce outdoor air into buildings are placed on building rooftops. The manufacture lead time of the single-use fermentor hardware is a fraction of traditional vessels. A novel photothermal process to spatially modulate the concentration of sub-wavelength, high-index nanocrystals in a multicomponent Ge-As-Pb-Se chalcogenide glass thin film resulting in an optically functional infrared grating is demonstrated. The process results in the formation of an optical nanocomposite possessing ultralow dispersion over unprecedented bandwidth. The spatially tailored index and dispersion modification enables creation of arbitrary refractive index gradients. Sub-bandgap laser exposure generates a Pb-rich amorphous phase transforming on heat treatment to high-index crystal phases. Spatially varying nanocrystal density is controlled by laser dose and is correlated to index change, yielding local index modification to ≈+0.1 in the mid-infrared.

Comparative flame retardancy of micro wood fiber plastic composites (WPCs) with fire retardants (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane, metal hydroxides and nanoclay) was studied. The fire additives (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane as well as magnesium hydroxide) obviously enhanced the fire retarding properties of WPCs. Especially, 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane significantly reduced the total heat release as well as heat release rate. In addition, a synergistic effect of 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) and nanoclay was achieved for the enhanced fire retarding performance of WPCs.

Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study—drawn from our experiences as collections librarians—examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.

Virtually every surface property has been invoked as being important to biological interfacial response: texture, roughness, topology, porosity, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, polar, apolar, (non)-wettable, non-fouling brushes, surface mobility, rigidity, flexibility, crystalline versus amorphous, aspect ratio. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) samples were functionalized with oregano´s essential oil (OEO) for possible antimicrobial packing applications. Different concentrations of OEO were used (0.5-1.5 % v/v). Polymers were UV light irradiated during 60 min to improve the OEO adhesion through the polar groups (COOH, OH or COO-) generation on their surface. The effect of OEO different concentration on their antimicrobial activity, mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of the functionalized polymers were analyzed. A noncontact electron multiplying charge-coupled-device (EMCCD)-based speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT) technology has been recently developed in our laboratory, allowing for noninvasive three-dimensional measurement of tissue blood flow distributions. One major remaining constraint in the scDCT is the assumption of a semi-infinite tissue volume with a flat surface, which affects the image reconstruction accuracy for tissues with irregular geometries. An advanced photometric stereo technique (PST) was integrated into the scDCT system to obtain the surface geometry in real time for image reconstruction. Objective To characterize nonpsychiatric prescription patterns of antidepressants according to drug labels and evidence assessments (on-label, evidence-based, and off-label) using structured outpatient electronic health record (EHR) data.

Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted using deidentified EHR data from an outpatient practice at a New York City-based academic medical center. Structured “medication–diagnosis” pairs for antidepressants from 35 325 patients between January 2010 and December 2015 were compared to the latest drug product labels and evidence assessments.

Results Of 140 929 antidepressant prescriptions prescribed by primary care providers (PCPs) and nonpsychiatry specialists, 69% were characterized as “on-label/evidence-based uses.” Depression diagnoses were associated …

For a number of various uses (storage, mixing, freezing, transportation, formulation, and filling) biopharmaceutical solutions are stored in sterile single-use plastic bags. Material transfers can then occur between containers and contents. These migrations, of different types, depend on the physicochemical characteristics of the material (composition, pH, solubility, viscosity, molecular weight, etc.), the nature of the product (solid, semi-solid and liquid) and the conditions of the material utilization.
