Electrically Conductive, Tough Hydrogels With Ph Sensitivity, Sina Naficy, Joselito M. Razal, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace, Philip G. Whitten

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Electrically conductive, mechanically tough hydrogels based on a double network (DN) comprised of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PPEGMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were produced. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was chemically polymerized within the tough DN gel to provide electronic conductivity. The effects of pH on the tensile and compressive mechanical properties of the fully swollen hydrogels, along with their electrical conductivity and swelling ratio were determined. Compressive and tensile strengths as high as 11.6 and 0.6 MPa, respectively, were obtained for hydrogels containing PEDOT with a maximum conductivity of 4.3 S cm-1. This conductivity is the highest yet reported …

"VNx nanoparticles and nanowires have been prepared by nitrifying V2O5 nanoparticles (NP) and nanowires (NW). The V2O5 NP and NW were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Magnetic susceptibility (chi) and magnetization measurements showed long range superconducting ordering (LRSO) at the temperature of 5.8 K for NW, but there was no observation of LRSO (at least down to 2 K) for the NP sample, which is a much lower temperature than for the corresponding bulk, while both NP and NW showed the absence of long range magnetic ordering, at least down to 2 K. However, the chi data showed that …

Lightning In Superconductors, J I. Vestgarden, D.V Shantsev, Y M. Galperin, T H. Johansen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Crucially important for application of type-II superconductor films is the stability of the vortex matter-magnetic flux lines penetrating the material. If some vortices get detached from pinning centres, the energy dissipated by their motion will facilitate further depinning, and may trigger a massive electromagnetic breakdown. Up to now, the time-resolved behaviour of these ultra-fast events was essentially unknown. We report numerical simulation results revealing the detailed dynamics during breakdown as within nanoseconds it develops branching structures in the electromagnetic fields and temperature, with striking resemblance of atmospheric lightning. During a dendritic avalanche the superconductor is locally heated above its critical …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Microporous poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVDF/PMMA) membranes were prepared using the phase-separation method. Then, the membranes were immersed in liquid electrolyte to form polymer electrolytes. The effects of PMMA on the morphology, degree of crystallinity, porosity, and electrolyte uptake of the PVDF membrane were studied. The addition of PMMA increased the pore size, porosity and electrolyte uptake of the PVDF membrane, which in turn increased the ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte. The maximum ionic conductivity at room temperature was 1.21 × 10−3 S cm−1 for Sample E70. The polymer electrolyte was investigated, along with lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as cathode …

Mechanism For Flux Guidance By Micrometric Antidot Arrays In Superconducting Films, J I. Vestgarden, V V. Yurchenko, R Wordenweber, T H. Johansen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"A study of magnetic flux penetration in a superconducting film patterned with arrays of micron-sized antidots (microholes) is reported. Magneto-optical imaging (MOI) of a YBa(2)Cu(3)O(x) film shaped as a long strip with perpendicular antidot arrays revealed both strong guidance of flux and, at the same time, large perturbations of the overall flux penetration and flow of current. These results are compared with a numerical flux creep simulation of a thin superconductor with the same antidot pattern. To perform calculations on such a complex geometry, an efficient numerical scheme for handling the boundary conditions of the antidots and the nonlocal electrodynamics …

Magnetostrictive Properties Of Directional Solidification Fe82ga9al9 Alloy, Y Zhou, X L. Wang, B W. Wang, Y Du, Y Liu, L Q. Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"Fe82Ga9Al9 alloy rod was prepared by the directional solidification (DS) method. The effects of uniaxial compressive stress on magnetostriction of the alloy and the temperature dependence of magnetostriction were investigated. The results show that the magnetostriction increases from 135 x 10(-6) at 2.3 MPa to 221 x 10(-6) at 53 MPa and then remains at this value between 53 MPa and 90 MPa. This enhancement results from domain rotation under the compressive stress. The temperature dependence results show that the saturated magnetostriction decreases by 11% (25 degrees C-120 degrees C) and 13% (25 degrees C-100 degrees C) for samples with …

Strain Modulated Transient Photostriction In La And Nb Codoped Multiferroic Bifeo3 Thin Films, Zuanming Jin, Yue Xu, Zhengbing Zhang, Xian Lin, Guohong Ma, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The coherent longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons in La and Nb codoped polycrystalline BiFeO3 (Bi0.8La0.2Fe 0.99Nb0.01O3 (BLFNO)) films are photo-induced and detected by the ultrafast reflectance spectroscopy. The generation mechanism of LA phonons is strongly connected with the ferroelectric polarization and is attributed to the transient photostriction effect, which is a combination of the optical rectification effect and the electrostriction effect. The strain modulation of sound velocity and out-of-plane elastic properties are demonstrated in BLFNO film on SrTiO3, which gives the insight on the dynamical coupling between electrical polarization and lattice deformation. Our findings are desired for the design of BiFeO3-based …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The technical aspects correlated with the observed enhancement of mass density and critical current density in the filaments of in situ MgB2 wires by means of the recently developed Cold High Pressure Densification (CHPD) are reviewed. The present analysis first summarizes the results obtained by means of a short sample prototype device with anvil lengths of 39 mm. Pressures well above 1 GPa were applied to short wires, causing Jc enhancements between a factor 1.5 and 2.3 at 4.2 K and 8 T. At 20 K, the enhancement is much stronger and reaches a factor 3 for binary and 5 …

Positive And Negative Exchange Bias Effects In The Simple Perovskite Manganite Ndmno3, Fang Hong, Zhenxiang Cheng, Jianli Wang, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Exchange bias effects were studied in the simple perovskite NdMnO 3. Nd 3+ ordering is induced by the Mn 3+ ferromagnetic component, and they are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other. At 30 K, both negative and positive exchange bias effects are found, which are dependent on the cooling field. The exchange bias fields are around -2400 Oe and 1800 Oe, respectively. Positive and negative exchange bias effects were also observed at 8 K, but the exchange bias fields are only 130 Oe and -120 Oe. The coupling intensity between Nd 3+ ordering and Mn 3+ ordering, and their initial states …

Exploiting High Quality Pedot:Pss-Swnt Composite Formulations For Wet-Spinning Multifunctional Fibers, Rouhollah Jalili, Joselito M. Razal, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In order to exploit the inherent properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in any polymer composite, systematic control of carbon nanotube loading and protocols that mitigate against CNT bundling are required. If such composites are to be rendered in fiber form via wet-spinning, then CNT bundling during the coagulation process must also be avoided. Here we have achieved this by utilizing highly exfoliated single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonicacid) (PEDOT:PSS) to obtain wet-spinnable composite formulations at various nanotube volume fractions (Vf). The addition of only 0.02 Vf of aggregate-free and individually dispersed SWNT resulted in a …

In Vitro Studying Corrosion Behaviour Of Biocorrodible Mg Alloys, Sina S. Jamali, Simon Moulton, Maria Forsyth, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The idea of bioabsorbable/biocorrodible stents has gained increasing attention in the last decade. Permanent coronary stents, traditionally made from 316L grade stainless steel, are routinely used for the treatment of blocked arteries. However, these stents can cause complications such as restenosis, thrombosis and the need for the patient to undergo prolonged antiplatelet therapy. Biodegradable metal stents provide an opportunity for the stent to remain in place for a period to ensure restoration of function and then degrade through a carefully controlled bio-corrosion process. Among the number of potentially suitable materials, Magnesium alloys have shown great promise as a stent material …

The photochemistry and thermodynamics of two terthiophene (TTh) derivatives bearing benzospiropyran (BSP) moieties, 1-(3,3''-dimethylindoline-6'-nitrobenzospiropyranyl)-2-ethyl 4,4''-didecyloxy-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene-30-acetate (BSP-2) and 1-(3,3''-dimethylindoline-6'- nitrobenzospiropyranyl)-2-ethyl 4,4''-didecyloxy-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene-30-carboxylate (BSP-3), differing only by a single methylene spacer unit, have been studied. The kinetics of photogeneration of the equivalent merocyanine (MC) isomers (MC-2 and MC-3, respectively), the isomerisation properties of MC-2 and MC-3, and the thermodynamic parameters have been studied in acetonitrile, and compared to the parent, non-TTh-functionalised, benzospiropyran derivative, BSP-1. Despite the close structural similarity of BSP-2 and BSP-3, their physicochemical properties were found to differ significantly; examples include activation energies (Ea(MC-2) = 75.05 kJ mol-1, …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Wearable electronics offer the combined advantages of both electronics and fabrics. Being an indispensable part of these electronics, lightweight, stretchable and wearable power sources are strongly demanded. Here we describe a daily-used nylon lycra fabric coated with polypyrrole as electrode for stretchable supercapacitors. Polypyrrole was synthesized on the fabric via a simple chemical polymerization process with ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant and naphthalene-2,6-disulfonic acid disodium salt (Na2NDS) as a dopant. This material was characterized with FESEM, FTIR, tensile stress, and studied as a supercapacitor electrode in 1.0 M NaCl. This conductive textile could endure 1000 stretching cycles …

Exchange Bias In A Nanocrystalline Hematite/Permalloy Thin Film Investigated With Polarized Neutron Reflectometry, David Laurence Cortie, K. -W Lin, H. - F. Hsu, X L. Wang, M James, H Fritzsche, S Bruck, F Klose Jan 2012

Exchange Bias In A Nanocrystalline Hematite/Permalloy Thin Film Investigated With Polarized Neutron Reflectometry, David Laurence Cortie, K. -W Lin, H. - F. Hsu, X L. Wang, M James, H Fritzsche, S Bruck, F Klose

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We investigated a hematite α-Fe2O3/permalloy Ni80Fe20 bilayer film where the antiferromagnetic layer consisted of small hematite grains in the 2 to 16 nm range. A pronounced exchange bias effect occurred below the blocking temperature of 40 K. The magnitude of exchange bias was enhanced relative to reports for identical compounds in large grain, epitaxial films. However, the blocking temperature was dramatically reduced. As the Néel temperature of bulk α-Fe2O3 is known to be very high (860 K), we attribute the low-temperature onset of exchange bias to the well-known finite-size effect which suppresses the Morin transition for nanostructured hematite. Polarized neutron …

Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties Of Naalh4 Co-Catalysed With Niobium Fluoride And Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Jianfeng Mao, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The effects of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as a co-catalyst with NbF5 on the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed desorption, and isothermal hydrogen ab/desorption techniques. It has been revealed that there is a synergistic effect of SWCNTs and NbF5 on the de/rehydrogenation of NaAlH4, which improves the hydrogen de/absorption performance when compared to adding either SWCNTs or NbF5 alone. For example, the apparent activation energy for the first-step and the second-step dehydrogenation of the co-doped NaAlH4 sample is estimated to be 85.9 …

Optical Parameters Of Znte Determined Using Continuous-Wave Terahertz Radiation, E Constable, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The optical parameters of three ZnTe crystal wafers of different thicknesses were determined using transmittance measurements of continuous-wave terahertz radiation from a two-color photomixing source. The parameters are extracted by fitting the transmittance data with theoretical curves generated using a Drude-Lorentz dielectric model of the crystal and a bootstrap statistical analysis of the fits. It was found at room temperature that the low and high frequency dielectric constants are ϵ(0) = 9.8±0.2 and ϵ(∞) = 7.3±0.6, respectively. The transverse optical phonon frequency was found to be νTO = 6.0±1.3 THz. Sample specific properties such as the plasma, collision, and phonon …

Approximate Techniques For Dispersive Shock Waves In Nonlinear Media, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth Jan 2012

Approximate Techniques For Dispersive Shock Waves In Nonlinear Media, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Many optical and other nonlinear media are governed by dispersive, or diffractive, wave equations, for which initial jump discontinuities are resolved into a dispersive shock wave. The dispersive shock wave smooths the initial discontinuity and is a modulated wavetrain consisting of solitary waves at its leading edge and linear waves at its trailing edge. For integrable equations the dispersive shock wave solution can be found using Whitham modulation theory. For nonlinear wave equations which are hyperbolic outside the dispersive shock region, the amplitudes of the solitary waves at the leading edge and the linear waves at the trailing edge of …

Magnetocapacitance Effect In Nonmultiferroic Yfe03 Single Crystal, Z X. Cheng, H Shen, J Xu, Peng Liu, S J. Zhang, Jianli Wang, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

YFeO3 single crystal displays two relaxor-like dielectric relaxations, one at low temperature (170300 K) and one at high temperature (370520 K), which are attributed to the activation of electrons and oxygen vacancies, respectively. Above the temperature at which electrons are activated, the sample displays a large magnetocapacitance effect. Comparison of the impedance Cole-Cole plots measured with and without applied magnetic field reveals that the occurrence of magnetocapacitance effect is accompanied with an increasing in DC conductivity under magnetic field after the activation of electrons, which is explained by the enhancement of electron jumping in Fe2b-O-Fe3b chains by magnetic field. Thus …

Room Temperature Giant And Linear Magnetoresistance In Topological Insulator Bi2te3 Nanosheets, Xiaolin Wang, Yi Du, S X. Dou, Chao Zang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

"Topological insulators, a new class of condensed matter having bulk insulating states and gapless metallic surface states, have demonstrated fascinating quantum effects. However, the potential practical applications of the topological insulators are still under exploration worldwide. We demonstrate that nanosheets of a Bi2Te3 topological insulator several quintuple layers thick display giant and linear magnetoresistance. The giant and linear magnetoresistance achieved is as high as over 600% at room temperature, with a trend towards further increase at higher temperatures, as well as being weakly temperature-dependent and linear with the field, without any sign of saturation at measured fields up to 13 …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

High-angle neutron diffraction was used to directly reveal the atomic-scale magnetic structure of a single-crystalline BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 thin film deposited on a SrTiO 3 (001) substrate. The BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 phase exhibits distinctive magnetic properties that differentiate it from both parent compounds: BiFeO 3 and BiMnO 3. A transition to long-range G-type antiferromagnetism was observed below 120 K with a (1 2 1 2 1 2) propagation vector. A weak ferromagnetic behavior was measured at low temperature by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. There is no indication of the spin cycloid, known …

Giant Interlayer Magnetoresistances And Strong Anisotropy In P-Type Sb2te3 Single Crystals, Zengji Yue, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou Jan 2012

Giant Interlayer Magnetoresistances And Strong Anisotropy In P-Type Sb2te3 Single Crystals, Zengji Yue, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Anisotropic interlayer magneto-transport properties have been studied over a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields in p-type Sb2Te3 single crystals. Giant interlayer magnetoresistance (MR) of up to 400% was observed, which exhibits quadratic field dependences in low fields and becomes linear at high fields without any trend towards saturation. The interlayer MR displays strong anisotropy and is attributable to the anisotropy of the Fermi surface. The observed giant anisotropic interlayer MR could find applications in p-type Sb2Te3 based magneto-electronic devices.
