Phase retrieval tomography has been successfully used to enhance imaging in systems that exhibit poor absorption contrast. However, when highly absorbing regions are present in a sample, so-called metal artefacts can appear in the tomographic reconstruction. We demonstrate that straightforward approaches for metal artefact reconstruction, developed in absorption contrast tomography, can be applied when using phase retrieval. Using a prototype thin film cochlear implant that has high and low absorption components made from iridium (or platinum) and plastic, respectively, we show that segmentation of the various components is possible and hence measurement of the electrode geometry and relative location to …

"The application of thin titania films by atomic layer deposition on top of a low temperature nanoparticulate TiO2 electrode was found to enhance the performance of dye sensitized solar cells. Dynamic measurements of photoinduced charge extraction showed that the atomic layer deposited top coat increased the electron lifetime at the same electron density. This was attributed to an increased electron trap concentration, which resulted in slower charge transport and increased charge carrier lifetimes.

The coherent longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons in La and Nb codoped polycrystalline BiFeO3 (Bi0.8La0.2Fe 0.99Nb0.01O3 (BLFNO)) films are photo-induced and detected by the ultrafast reflectance spectroscopy. The generation mechanism of LA phonons is strongly connected with the ferroelectric polarization and is attributed to the transient photostriction effect, which is a combination of the optical rectification effect and the electrostriction effect. The strain modulation of sound velocity and out-of-plane elastic properties are demonstrated in BLFNO film on SrTiO3, which gives the insight on the dynamical coupling between electrical polarization and lattice deformation. Our findings are desired for the design of BiFeO3-based …

We investigated a hematite α-Fe2O3/permalloy Ni80Fe20 bilayer film where the antiferromagnetic layer consisted of small hematite grains in the 2 to 16 nm range. A pronounced exchange bias effect occurred below the blocking temperature of 40 K. The magnitude of exchange bias was enhanced relative to reports for identical compounds in large grain, epitaxial films. However, the blocking temperature was dramatically reduced. As the Néel temperature of bulk α-Fe2O3 is known to be very high (860 K), we attribute the low-temperature onset of exchange bias to the well-known finite-size effect which suppresses the Morin transition for nanostructured hematite. Polarized neutron …

Fabrication And Magneto-Transport Properties Of P-Type Bi0.5sb1.5te3 Thin Films On Glass By Pulsed Laser Deposition, Zhenwei Yu, Xiaolin Wang, Yi Du, Chao Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Bi0.5Sb1. 5Te3 thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method at room temperature. Annealing effect on properties of the films was studied by structural, morphology and physical characterizations. It was found that the as-grown amorphous film crystallizes at annealing temperature of 473 K. A semiconductor-metal transition was observed in annealed films. A linear magnetoresistance (MR) was investigated in the annealed films in a magnetic field up to 13 T without saturation at low temperature.

High-angle neutron diffraction was used to directly reveal the atomic-scale magnetic structure of a single-crystalline BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 thin film deposited on a SrTiO 3 (001) substrate. The BiMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 phase exhibits distinctive magnetic properties that differentiate it from both parent compounds: BiFeO 3 and BiMnO 3. A transition to long-range G-type antiferromagnetism was observed below 120 K with a (1 2 1 2 1 2) propagation vector. A weak ferromagnetic behavior was measured at low temperature by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. There is no indication of the spin cycloid, known …
