Processor, Payload, And Power Subsystem Development Of The Missat-1 Cubesat, Rana Roxanne Gordji, Zachary Christian Puuwai Olaa Morgan, Samuel Liyang Di Jan 2014

Processor, Payload, And Power Subsystem Development Of The Missat-1 Cubesat, Rana Roxanne Gordji, Zachary Christian Puuwai Olaa Morgan, Samuel Liyang Di

Honors Theses

This thesis details the development and programming of the processor subsystem, camera payload, and power subsystem of the Mississippi Imaging Space Satellite (MISSat-1). An overview of the hardware and software considerations necessary for the processor subsystem is discussed. An explanation of microcontroller uses as well as real time operating system fundamentals is also presented as it relates to MISSat-1. The subsystem deals with varieties of peripheral integration and communication standards among devices. The camera graphical user interface (GUI) was expanded with the addition of functions that improve CubeSat image handling. Additionally, image processing techniques and algorithms are considered to improve …

Error Control And Efficient Memory Management For Sparse Integral Equation Solvers Based On Local-Global Solution Modes, Jun-Shik Choi Jan 2014

Error Control And Efficient Memory Management For Sparse Integral Equation Solvers Based On Local-Global Solution Modes, Jun-Shik Choi

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

This dissertation presents and analyzes two new algorithms for sparse direct solution methods based on the use of local-global solution (LOGOS) modes. One of the new algorithms is a rigorous error control strategy for LOGOS-based matrix factorizations that utilize overlapped, localizing modes (OL-LOGOS) on a shifted grid. The use of OL-LOGOS modes is critical to obtaining asymptotically efficient factorizations from LOGOS-based methods. Unfortunately, the approach also introduces a non-orthogonal basis function structure. This can cause errors to accumulate across levels of a multilevel implementation, which has previously posed a barrier to rigorous error control for the OL-LOGOS factorization method. This …

Detection Of Ofdm Signals Using Pilot Tones And Applications To Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radio Systems, Ahmed Temtam Jan 2014

Detection Of Ofdm Signals Using Pilot Tones And Applications To Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radio Systems, Ahmed Temtam

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nowadays there are an increasing number of wireless devices which support wireless networking and the need for higher data rate communication is increasing rabidly. As more and more systems go wireless, approaching technologies will face spectral crowding and existence of wireless devices will be an important issue. Because of the limited bandwidth availability, accepting the request for higher capacity and data rates is a challenging task, demanding advanced technologies that can offers new methods of using the available radio spectrum. Cognitive radio introduces a key solution to the spectral increasing issue by presenting the opportunistic usage of spectrum that is …

Ionizing Radiation Detection Using Microstructured Optical Fiber, Stanton Dehaven Jan 2014

Ionizing Radiation Detection Using Microstructured Optical Fiber, Stanton Dehaven

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Ionizing radiation detecting microstructured optical fibers are fabricated, modeled and experimentally measured for X-ray detection in the 10-40 keV energy range. These fibers operate by containing a scintillator material which emits visible light when exposed to ionizing radiation. An X-ray source characterized with a CdTe spectrometer is used to quantify the X-ray detection efficiency of the fibers. The solid state CdTe detector is considered 100% efficient in this energy range. A liquid filled microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is presented where numerical analysis and experimental observation leads to a geometric theory of photon transmission using total internal reflection. The model relates …

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Jon Mullen Jan 2014

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Jon Mullen

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering

Instrumented umanned aerial vehicles represent a new way of measuring turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. However, autonomous measurements require control methods with disturbance-rejection and altitude command-following capabilities. Filtered dynamic inversion is a control method with desirable disturbance-rejection and command-following properties, and this controller requires limited model information. We implement filtered dynamic inversion as the pitch controller in an altitude-hold autopilot. We design and numerically simulate the continuous-time and discrete-time filtered-dynamic-inversion controllers with anti-windup on a nonlinear aircraft model. Finally, we present results from a flight experiment comparing the filtered-dynamic-inversion controller to a classical proportional-integral controller. The experimental results show …

Hard-Switched Switched Capacitor Converter Design, Lukas Konstantin Müller Jan 2014

Hard-Switched Switched Capacitor Converter Design, Lukas Konstantin Müller

Masters Theses

"Switched capacitor (SC) converters are becoming quite popular for use in DC-DC power conversion. The concept of equivalent resistance in SC converters is frequently used to determine the conduction losses due to the load current. A variety of methodologies have been presented in the literature to predict the equivalent resistance in hard-switched SC converters. However, a majority of the methods described are difficult to apply to general SC converter topologies. Additionally, previous works have not considered all nonidealities in their analysis, such as switching losses or stray inductances. This work presents a generalized and easy to use model to determine …

Modeling Of Multi-Terminal Vsc-Based Hvdc Systems, Mohammed Mabrook Alharbi Jan 2014

Modeling Of Multi-Terminal Vsc-Based Hvdc Systems, Mohammed Mabrook Alharbi

Masters Theses

"Improving the efficiency and operation of power transmission is important due to the continual increase in demand for electric power. In addition, many remote areas throughout the world lack sufficient access to electricity. Unfortunately, utilities cannot satisfy the high demand of power by building new power stations because of economic and environmental reasons. However, utilities can increase generation and transmission line efficiencies by controlling the power flow through their systems. One new attractive technology that enables the control of power flow in the system is Voltage-Source-Converter High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) transmission.

Multi-terminal-HVDC (M-HVDC) can be built using VSC technology. …
