Teacher And Student Perceptions Of Dyned Multimedia Courseware: An Evaluation Of Call In An American Technical College, Gail Katherine Ellsworth
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the perceptions of teachers and students using the DynEd Multimedia Courseware in adult ESL workshops in an American technical college setting. The goals of the study were to determine (a) the teachers’ perceptions of their training to facilitate DynEd, (b) the teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the facilitators’ role in supporting students, and (c) the teachers’ and students’ perceptions of DynEd’s appropriateness for adult learners at our institution. Data from questionnaires and focus group interviews were analyzed using Chapelle’s (2001) Criteria for CALL Task Appropriateness as the conceptual framework. Findings suggest that both teachers and students need …
Critical Literacy For Linguistically Diverse Students, Jennifer Ann King
Critical Literacy For Linguistically Diverse Students, Jennifer Ann King
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this capstone is how can a critical literacy unit on exploring identity enable secondary ELLs to find voice and take action? It documents the creation of a twelve lesson unit organized around three target texts and one digital storytelling project. These lessons blend the components of the SIOP Model for effective instruction of English learners (Echevarría, Short, and Vogt, 2013) with activities to promote critical literacy. Additionally, the author documents the relevant research used in the creation of the curriculum along with the successes and challenges of the curriculum development process. In reflecting on the …

Linguistic Development Of Children And The Syntax Of Basals, David Brown, L. Briggs
Linguistic Development Of Children And The Syntax Of Basals, David Brown, L. Briggs
David C. Brown
Children's ability to reflect upon language begins to appear about age two (Clark, 1978). During the early stages of language development, children correct their own pronunciations, question the appropriateness of speech styles, play with different linguistic units, and make judgments concerning language usage for varying situations (Clark, 1978). Children exhibit an increasing awareness of language with age and soon become aware of both the form and function of language. Their metacognitive skills become apparent as they progress from the simple to the more complex linguistic structures. Children's language acquisition and cognitive development continue to develop during the early years of …

Impact Of The Economic Downturn On Schools, Robert Mccord, Noelle Ellerson, K. Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Richard Lemons, T. Mattocks, Toby Melver, Margaret Orr
T. C. Mattocks
In Fall 2008, in response to the recent economic downturn, as evidenced in state budget shortfalls, federal buy‐outs and interventions, and a series of additional events characterizing a slowing, stagnant economy, AASA examined the impact on school districts across the nation. While there are regional differences, the findings of AASA’s Economic Impact Survey, presented here, demonstrate that superintendents in every part of the country are subject to the realities of the economic downturn. While this benchmark data cannot predict a trend, it is difficult to deny that superintendents, in increasing numbers, are confronted by the looming financial crisis that threatens …

Zero Tolerance: Balancing An Uncertain Expulsion Policy, Robert Mccord, James Hager, T. Mattocks
T. C. Mattocks
The article tests the common understanding of zero tolerance expulsion policies and in doing so balances the manner in which the policy is being implemented with the role of the Federal Courts as the arbitrator of disputes arising out of the use of the policy as a deterrent. The authors identify the important issues, review recent legal challenges and offer analysis of the implications for school administrators.

Systematically Controlling For The Influence Of Age, Sex, Hertz And Time Post-Whole-Body Vibration Exposure On Four Measures Of Physical Performance In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Randomized Cross-Over Study, Harold Merriman, C. Brahler, Kurt Jackson
C. Jayne Brahler
Though popular, there is little agreement on what whole-body vibration (WBV) parameters will optimize performance. This study aimed to clarify the effects of age, sex, hertz, and time on four physical function indicators in community-dwelling older adults (N = 32). Participants were exposed to 2 minutes WBV per session at either 2 Hz or 26 Hz, and outcome measures were recorded at 2-, 20-, and 40-minute post-WBV. Timed get-up-and-go and chair sit-and-reach performances improved post-WBV for both sexes, were significantly different between 2 Hz and 26 Hz treatments (P ≤ 0.05), and showed statistically significant interactions between age and gender …

The Emotional Effect Of Same Sex Grouping, Katherine Barwacz Heidrick
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project was, how do gender roles affect the achievement of school-aged children? It documents one teachers research in her fifth grade classroom by creating a curriculum related challenge that students worked on in mixed gender groups and same gender groups. The author documents the details of the research literature review in order to analyze and validate the study. The action research portion included surveys that students responded to, asking them to reflect over their experience. In conclusion, the author describes both successes and struggles of working with mixed and same gender groups and concludes …

Exploring Attitudes Toward Teacher Led Parent Advocacy Models That Address Racial Education Inequity, Paula Yadel Cole
Exploring Attitudes Toward Teacher Led Parent Advocacy Models That Address Racial Education Inequity, Paula Yadel Cole
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The question addressed in this project is, “what are teachers and parents’ attitudes toward a teacher led parent advocacy model that addresses education inequity in Minnesota?” The premise of this work is that according to available research, current models for parent engagement in schools are not relevant to families of color. In depth interviews were conducted to understand how six families perceive the education system and how empowered they feel about leading their children towards higher education. The author also collected questionnaire responses to investigate how teachers feel about leading instruction at a potential parent leadership academy. The findings conclude …

African-American Principals In The Midwest: Voices Of The Sojourner Principal, David Brown
African-American Principals In The Midwest: Voices Of The Sojourner Principal, David Brown
David C. Brown
In an era of accountability and high standards for public schools, some African American principals decided to work in predominantly white schools. Their experiences were challenging because they were racial newcomers in schools with students different from their own race. In this case study, 12 African-American principals and assistant principals in one Midwestern state described their experiences working in schools with fewer than 20 percent African-American students. In semi-structured interviews, participants discussed motivations, perceptions, and experiences serving as principals in predominantly white schools. Three primary research questions were investigated: How do African-American principals in predominantly white schools describe their daily …

Introduction Racial/ethnic minority communities are at increasingly high risk for chronic diseases related to obesity. Access to stores that sell affordable, nutritious food is a prerequisite for adopting a healthful diet. The objective of this study was to evaluate food access, availability, and affordability in 3 nonoverlapping but similar low-income communities in urban Los Angeles, California. Methods Using a community-based participatory research approach, we trained community members to conduct a food assessment to 1) map the number and type of retail food outlets in a defined area and 2) survey a sample of stores to determine whether they sold selected …

Plenary 4: Engaged Student Learning Across Disciplines: Reflection Within And Beyond The Classroom, Michelle Mamberg, Margaret Lowe, David O'Malley, Laura Mcalinden
Margaret Lowe
Contemplative pedagogy introduces a range of methods into our courses which aim to explore various mindfulness-based practices which have been shown to improve engaged student learning. By incorporating reflection on one's own immediate experience, faculty and students can better explore such analytic categories as objectivity, bias, point-of-view, acquired knowledge, and argumentation. In addition, supporting BSU's social justice initiative, recent research has demonstrated that training in reflective practices fosters development of self-knowledge, compassion (for oneself, others and the planet), and community-building. Based on the enthusiastic response to our 2010 roundtable, we plan to provide attendees further examples of such pedagogical techniques. …

Looking Back, Looking Forward: How The Economic Downturn Continues To Impact School Districts, Robert Mccord, Noelle Ellerson, K. Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Richard Lemons, T. Mattocks, Margaret Orr
T. C. Mattocks
This study is the fourth in a series of studies conducted by the American Association of School Administrators on the impact of the economic downturn on schools. Collectively, the findings of the AASA Economic Impact Study series demonstrate that school districts in every part of the country are subject to the realities of the economic downturn. While this benchmark data cannot predict a trend, it is difficult to deny that the financial crisis is increasingly threatening the progress schools have obtained and the stability they have enjoyed in the past. This latest study, “Looking Back, Looking Forward: How the Economic …

The Manifest Unwisdom Of The Aaup As A Collective Bargaining Agency: A Dissenting View, Sanford Kadish, William Van Alstyne, Robert Webb
Sanford Kadish
This Article addresses the current proposal for the American Association of University Professors to enforce the collective bargaining rights of its individuals. This paper advocates that the AAUP's principle resources and focus has always been centered in academia, and the organization is better equipped to advise other entities employing collective bargaining, rather than affect such change on its own.
