A Missing Piece In The K-12 Online Learning Puzzle: Professional Development For Online Teachers, Chad A. Turley

Theses and Dissertations

K-12 online learning continues to grow, and with it, the need for well-trained online teachers. This multiple-article dissertation explores K-12 online teaching professional development. A literature review describes research trends regarding unique strategies and competencies related to online teaching. It explores strategies such as acting as a facilitator, developing course knowledge, encouraging student engagement, interacting regularly with students, giving feedback, and developing time management skills. The review of the literature examines the dynamics of leadership through historical crises of an economic nature, endogenous crises, world health …

Improvement Science: Improving Employee Engagement, Ryan S. Carpenter Apr 2022

Improvement Science: Improving Employee Engagement, Ryan S. Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

Improving employee engagement has proven elusive in too many schools and districts in our nation, persistently contributing to high staff turnover in buildings and limited employee ownership in the mission, vision, and values of a school's strategic plan. The most common approach to the improvement of educational systems has been the adoption of top-down reforms and short-lived improvement programs. In recent years, an Improvement Science approach, which originated in the medical and business worlds, has made its way onto the education scene. The impact of Improvement Science in education is a developing area in educational research. This dissertation includes four …

Effects Of Engagements And Presentation Order In Informal Science Presentations, William Henry Katzman Apr 2022

Effects Of Engagements And Presentation Order In Informal Science Presentations, William Henry Katzman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Science museums conduct presentations for their audiences to attract and educate visitors, yet research on presentations has primarily concentrated on whether individual presentations were effective. This mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study looks at how the presenter’s mental and physical engagements within a presentation affects audience members by altering sociocultural context of the presentation.

Physical engagements involve asking audience members to physically participate, while mental engagements involved asking audience members to make predictions prior to observing a demonstration. Audiences were given presentations containing: 1) Both mental and physical engagements, 2) Physical engagements only, 3) Mental engagements only or 4) No engagements (control).

Student Attitudes Towards Graduation: A Comparison Of Motivation Factors For Greek Life And Non-Greek Life Undergraduate Students, Crystal Sanders Apr 2022

Student Attitudes Towards Graduation: A Comparison Of Motivation Factors For Greek Life And Non-Greek Life Undergraduate Students, Crystal Sanders

Dissertations

Greek life is an activity that is part of student involvement on a college or university campus. Student involvement allows students to increase their knowledge outside of the classroom through interaction with their peers and faculty, which will hopefully lead to graduation. The creation of Greek life engaged students in activities outside of the classroom. Unfortunately, Greek life has carried negative references and has been associated with morally wrong activities. Colleges and universities received negative impacts from such activities and behaviors. Most research about Greek life conveyed dedication to focusing on hazing, academics, and graduation rates. Revealing the motivational influences …

The Counterstories Of Black Women At Community Colleges: Understanding How Co-Curricular Involvement Helps Them To Persist, Karen A. Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to add the voices and counter-stories of five Black women who attend community colleges to the discourse and literature concerning their co-curricular involvement experiences and persistence. I used critical race theory (CRT) as the theoretical framework to understand how involvement in co-curricular activities helps Black women at community colleges create support systems that allow them to overcome oppression and other forms of subordination and persist. Most studies that examine this phenomenon tend to use seminal student involvement theories that fail to account for the nuanced experiences and subordinate intersecting identities that Black …

Research And Relationship-Based Curriculum – Exploration Of How Research And Relationship Experiences In Undergraduate Education Impact Students’ Employability, Graduate Education Intention, And Entrepreneurial Acumen, Michelle Pipes

Dissertations

After decades of shrinking financial research support (Smith, 2004), continuously rising tuition and student debt (Beal et al., 2019), and the induction of numerous alternatives (Garrett, 2021), traditional higher education is struggling to provide the value that students are demanding (Woodall et al., 2014). Student engagement has been positively linked to increased retention (staying in school until completion of a degree) and reduced dropout (leaving school and not returning) rates (Finn & Rock, 1997; Reschly & Christenson, 2012), both of which contribute to how students perceive the value of higher education (Alves, 2011). The purpose of this study was to …

When ranked and compared to students in other countries, students in the United States of America consistently rank below their peers in science knowledge. Among the many recommendations for increasing the science knowledge of students is a merge of informal science education (ISE) and public and private science classrooms.

There is limited research focused on (1) the historical trends of research conducted in informal science education including the methodologies employed and pedagogical practices revealed and (2) the epistemological and pedagogical beliefs of formal science educators, who hold dual positions in the classroom and in an informal science setting. This dissertation …

A Component-Based Analysis For Online Proctoring, Salma Roshdy Ali Apr 2022

A Component-Based Analysis For Online Proctoring, Salma Roshdy Ali

Theses and Dissertations

The switch to online learning due to the COVID-19 revealed flaws in the existing learning methods, especially with online proctored assessments. Hence, online proctoring using computers was needed for a fair evaluation. Many studies develop cheating detection systems using several approaches. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the existing studies investigated the impact of their system components in detecting cheating behaviors. Combining system components, even if they do not significantly improve the system performance in cheating detection, can cause an overload on the system. Therefore, our goal is to investigate the system components’ impact, individually and combined, …
