Twentieth Century Economics Of Child-Rearing In Japan, Michele Gibney
Twentieth Century Economics Of Child-Rearing In Japan, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
In order to explain the falling Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Japan, it is necessary to look at the social factors affecting women and raising children in Japan. By examining historical factors surrounding women in Japan—their education, their presence in the workforce, and the cultural stigmas attached to their stereotypical representation—I will attempt to describe the deteriorating TFR in Japan as an economic problem with political and social repercussions. In conclusion I will also try to provide a prognosis and a recommendation for a solution.

Perceived Impact Of Curriculum Management Audit Recommendations On Increased Student Achievement (Dissertation), Kelly Cross
Perceived Impact Of Curriculum Management Audit Recommendations On Increased Student Achievement (Dissertation), Kelly Cross
Kelly L. Cross
Curriculum management audits are an intensive investigation, or audit, of a school district's daily operations, including curriculum, policies, organizational structure, financial operations, and use of assessment data. Curriculum audits are conducted by a team of certified auditors composed of professional educators and administrators. Curriculum audit findings are used to generate recommendations, which are presented to the school district in an audit report. The audit recommendations provide the district with specific recommended actions that are intended to improve district operations and to improve student achievement. This research examined whether implementation of curriculum audit recommendations, as perceived by key administrators, influenced student …

The attrition of both new and experienced teachers is a challenge for schools and school administrators throughout the United States, particularly in large urban districts. Because of the importance of this issue, there is a large empirical literature that investigates why teachers quit and how they might be induced to stay. Here we build upon this literature by suggesting another important factor in the teacher decision to stay or leave: the quality of school facilities. We investigate the importance of facility quality using data from a survey of K—12 public school teachers in Washington, D.C. We find in our sample …

Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Student Expectations. Results From Pisa 2003., Wolfram Schulz
Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Student Expectations. Results From Pisa 2003., Wolfram Schulz
Dr Wolfram Schulz
Student performance is generally viewed as the main criterion variable when analysing equity in the outcomes of education. However, there is evidence that even with increasing equity in achievement, inequity in other important learning outcomes might still prevail. Self-beliefs like mathematics self-efficacy, i.e. students’ judgements of their own ability to solve tasks in mathematics, are often viewed as crucial learning outcomes, which affect the process of learning and are an important predictor of educational career choices. The second survey of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2003) provides data on self-related cognitions, motivations, learning behaviours and student performance in …

First Experiences With Object Lessons In Nineteenth-Century Brazil: Origins Of A Progressive Pedagogy For The Brazilian Primary School [Primeiras Experiências Com O Ensino Por Objetos No Brasil Oitocentista: Origens De Uma Pedagogia Progressiva Para A Escola Primaria Brasileira], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia
Karl M Lorenz
This paper describes the methodology of Object Teaching and relates how its appearance in Brazil was a transnational phenomenon that achieved its maximum articulation in 1886 with Rui Barbosa’s translation of Norman Calkins’ Primary Object Lessons. It begins with an overview of primary school teaching in Brazil in the second half of the 19th century, followed by discussion of Barbosa’s ideas on promoting change in the schools. Central to the exposition are the ideas contained in a report that Barbosa submitted to the National Assembly in 1882, in which he proposed a new organization of primary school education, suggestions for …

Thinking Beyond The Classroom In Management Education: Implementing Academic Service-Learning For A Comprehensive Learning Experience, Ovilla Turnbull, Susan R. Madsen

The business environment has gradually become more dynamic and complex throughout the past decades. Today, businesses struggle with complicated issues that were not discussed and/or did not exist 25 to 30 years ago. Yet, according to Dallimore (2002), “higher education has not adequately responded to the need to prepare students from this complex environment” (p. 86). Educators have found that experiential teaching methods, including academic service-learning, address these current challenges in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to assist management educators and practitioners in understanding the service-learning pedagogy and its worth and applicability to management education. We will …

A nationwide push for the use of technology has influenced classroom teaching in the United States. This study examined the use of technology in elementary classrooms. Specific aspects of technology such as PowerPoint and word processing were examined in relation to developing skills in writing. Data from 46 fifth and third grade students as well as self-evaluation interviews with teachers were used to understand the overall comprehensive value of technology in teaching how to write. I expect my results to support previous research findings which assert that using computer technology in writing motivates students to do better work and is …

Teaching Communication: Getting To The Heart Using Visuals As An Instructional Tool, John Fisher, Melody Hubbard
Teaching Communication: Getting To The Heart Using Visuals As An Instructional Tool, John Fisher, Melody Hubbard
Dr. John R. Fisher
Students become much more engaged in movies than in most other visual aids because they find them entertaining and see greater applications in their own lives. However, the instructor’s goal in showing films is more than to entertain or fill time; it is to assist in learning. By increasing student involvement, higher levels of learning can be achieved. This paper applies a taxonomy of engagement suggested by Rößling and Naps (2002) to the teaching of communication. By engaging students, beyond viewing, in responding, changing, constructing and presenting, greater learning outcomes can be achieved.

Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act was enacted in 1994 as a result of pressure created by Forum Against Sex-determination and Sex –preselection. But it was not implemented. After another decade of campaigning by women’s rights organisations and public interest litigation filed by CEHAT, MASUM and Dr. Sabu George, The Pre-natal Diagnostics Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Amendment Act, 2002 received the assent of the President of India on 17-1-2003. The Act provides “for the prohibition of sex selection, before or after conception, and for regulation of pre-natal diagnostic techniques for the purposes of detecting genetic abnormalities or metabolic disorders or …

Factors Influencing Reading Achievement In Germany And Spain : Evidence From Pisa 2000, Petra Lietz, Dieter Kotte, Maria Lopez
Dr Petra Lietz
This article examines the factors fostering and inhibiting student achievement in Germany and Spain at the 15-year-old level in the OECD Programme on International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2000. Both countries performed significantly below the OECD average not only in Reading but also in Mathematics and Science on this occasion. Since the two countries are similar in average levels of student achievement, it is of interest to consider whether similar patterns exist in the ways in which factors operate to influence student achievement in these two countries. Preliminary analyses were carried out with PLSPATH and subsequent two-level models were analysed …

Neoliberalism, The Technological Sublime, And Techniques Of The Self, David Shutkin
Neoliberalism, The Technological Sublime, And Techniques Of The Self, David Shutkin
David S. Shutkin
Part of a special section on cultural studies in instructional design. The writer considers the courses that he teaches as an educational technologist and teacher educator in relation to the deployment of a governmental discourse on neoliberalism. He considers educational technology and neoliberalism; the American technological sublime, which conflates technological invention with progress and imbues certain technologies with moral values; neoliberalism as a form of governmental rationality; neoliberalism, freedom, and educational technology; and the Society for Technology in Education's National Educational Technology Standards project, which reflects the emergence of neoliberalism and the standards movement in education in the 1980s.
