Triple Play, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips Jan 2012

Triple Play, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips

Hal Blythe

“Triple Play” presents three procedural techniques nicely reduced to related mnemonics for making the most of class time by embedding three different approaches to assessing students’ learning right there in the class that day. The fruits of such exercises doubtless will give faculty who try them important information on what’s working with their students and what is not, but a point the authors don’t emphasize is that the exercises will also compel students to become conscious of where they stand in their own learning as learning rather than as a response to how they felt about the class ...

Alice Munro's "Walker Brothers Cowboy" (The Norton Anthology of World Literature. Ed. Sarah Lawall. NY: Norton, 2002) is bracketed by similar images that establish the futility of trying to stop time. At the beginning of story, in order to explain to the narrator how the glaciers formed the Great Lakes, the father "shows me his hand with his spread fingers pressing the rock-hard ground where we are sitting. His fingers hardly make any impression at all ... " (3012); at the conclusion as Ben Jordan, the father, and his children prepare to return home from their odyssey, Nora Cronin touches the ...

The authors’ purpose in this book is to provide “a collection of practical tips drawn from real-life experiences.” We believe this particular book is so important to share with today’s audience, we almost called it Take My Book, Please! On the other hand, does the scholarly world need another book on the importance of scholarship? Further, if the book standard for tenure is slowly disappearing because so many academic presses are closing, why would we bother to write one? And recent studies show that new faculty members consider university employment a 9:00-5:00 job, so doesn’t that ...

Creative Writing And An Overlooked Population, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

As a regional institution, our university's historic mission is to train area teachers who must operate under the auspices of the Kentucky Educational Reform Act, which mandates extensive writing portfolios i Grades 4,7, and 12. While these portfolios may include as much as 50% creative writing or work employing creative writing techniques, a recent survey of teachers responsible for guiding students revealed that not a single teacher had ever taken a course in creative writing pedagogy and only a handful had even had any formal training in creative writing. We suggested that this lack of teacher training was ...

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

n a telling scene toward the opening of Clay's Quilt (NY: Ballantine, 2001), Silas House has the novel's protagonist, Clay Sizemore, heading up Town Mountain toward the Hilltop Club, the local honkytonk. As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Importantly, this scene acts as House's foreshadowing of the struggle Clay will endure ...

In 2006 the Association of American Colleges and Universities surveyed 306 businesses to determine the most valuable skills that institutions of higher learning should be teaching, and the Top Three were (in order) teamwork, critical thinking, and communication. Yet in 2010 when IBM’s Institute for Business Values asked 1500 chief executives what leadership competency they championed above all others, voters selected none of the winners from three years before. Instead, the new American idol was creativity.

Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

One way Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) can position themselves at the epicenter of campus activity and insert themselves into strategic planning is by transforming group work through an effective brainstorming process that the authors have developed called Ideation Development for Excellence in Academic Learning (I.D.E.A.L.). The authors explain the evolution of the process in a learning community from best practices in brainstorming through a working model. The process has been effective with actual groups both on and off campus (vs. laboratory conditions). “Collaboration drives creativity because innovation always emerges from a series of sparks ...
