Broadening Assessment, Improving Fairness? Some Examples From School Science, Jan Lokan, Ray Adams, Brian Doig

Prof Ray Adams

Following a review of equity issues in testing, especially in relation to science, two assessment programmes in school science, each of which was designed both to probe a range of aspects of student performance and for use in a large-scale study, are discussed. Both have been developed and used in the 1990s, one is Australia only and the other in many countries. The programmes and the range of aspects they attempt to assess are described and results are cited for several groups of students. Issues of fairness through broadening of large-scale assessments to include tasks requiring students to construct their ...

What Differences Does A Research Centre Make?, Phil Mckenzie Jan 1999

What Differences Does A Research Centre Make?, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

Have key research centres brought about a significant change in the quality, quantity and impact of vocational education and training research in their particular fields? This article offers a personal response to this question through the authors experience with the Monash University-ACER Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET). It reflects on the ways in which the organisation's structure as a research centre enables a different way of doing vocational education and training research than individual researchers loosely linked together and on the processes of concentration and focus which lead to research of higher quality and greater ...

Does Examinee Motivation Moderate The Relationship Between Test Consequences And Test Performance?, Donna L. Sundre Jan 1999

Does Examinee Motivation Moderate The Relationship Between Test Consequences And Test Performance?, Donna L. Sundre

Donna L. Sundre

There is substantial evidence that the disposition of test takers is central to performance. This research extends previous work by replicating the experimental design of L. Wolf and J. Smith (1995) and conducting a secondary analysis of their data to attempt to demonstrate differential effect sizes for examinees reporting varying motivation levels in consequences versus no-consequences situations. The second phase of the study investigated the hypothesis that examinee motivation and item type moderate the relationship between test consequences and test performance by expanding the Wolf and Smith design to include multiple-choice and essay test items. Ninety undergraduate psychology majors participated ...

The Tarlqat Al- 'Alawiyyah And The Emergence Of The Shi'i School In Indonesia And Malaysia, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

The recent emergence and current development of the Imami Shi'i school in Indonesia and Malaysia can only be understood against the backdrop of the early history of the Si 'ah, as well as that of the history of the Islamization of the Malay-Indonesian tor that binds these three historical processes together in a remarkable case of "conversion" within Islam is the 'olawiyyali sufi order (al-tariqah Archipelago. The common fac-al- 'alawiyyah). The tariqah al- 'alawiyyah is the path of the Siidat Bani 'alawiyyah.

Problems With Peirce's Concept Of Abduction, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 1999

Problems With Peirce's Concept Of Abduction, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Abductive reasoning takes place in forming "hypotheses" in order to explain "facts." Thus, the concept of abduction promises an understanding of creativity in science and learning. It raises, however, also a lot of problems. Some of them will be discussed in this paper: After analyzing the difference between induction and abduction (1), I shall discuss Peirce's claim that there is a "logic" of abduction (2). The thesis is that this claim can be understood, if we make a clear distinction between inferential elements and perceptive elements of abductive reasoning. For Peirce, the creative act of forming explanatory hypotheses and ...

An Enduring Voice In American Indian Education: The Arizona State University Center For Indian Education, 1959-1999, Jeffrey P. Shepherd

Jeffrey P Shepherd

This article provides a narrative analysis of the history of the Center for Indian Education at Arizona State University. As the premier center for native educational issues, the CIE played a crucial role in raising awareness about educational disparities on Indian reservations. The Center trained thousands of future teachers that have built lasting educational systems for native children across the country. In addition, the CIE shaped state and national educational policy by playing a historic role in the civil rights activities of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, the Center continues to contribute to educational training and policy across the state ...

Despite the popularity of promotionally-oriented Web sites within journalism/ mass communication programs in higher education, there has been little examination of sites and their contents. Almost no research has focused on visual, informational, and operational enhancements, or how Web sites of different higher education programs in the discipline differ from each other. This research addresses some of the unanswered questions about how journalism/ mass communication Web sites use enhancements to communicate with online users.
