The capital structures of firms were analyzed from 1989 data housed in the Computstat files to assess the role of debt in strategic interactions between firms in the product market. The study shows no significant role for leverage.

Data from Compustat database was examined to detect which firms refocused and begin to understand why they did so. It was found thatduring the 1980s the largest firms diversified and smaller firms refocused. The analysis ends by noting that this may be due to the increasing domination of the economy by large firms.

Survey results from CEOs of pharmaceutical firms and "archival" data were used to explore the relationship between strategic intent, control mechanisms, and innovation. Results suggest that strategic intent does not have a direct effect on innovation outcomes but does have an indirect affect via control mechanisms. A model for analyzing coupon behavior is presented and evaluated using 279 valid household questionnaires and 30 products. Results suggest that coupon usage is motivated by psychological as well as monetary factors.

MBA classes were given information about firms and asked to assess credit risk. risk. Test groups used different graphical presentations of data to make assessments. Star format graphics were found to be more effective than tables or bar graphs. Tables were found to be faster and more accurate in making assessments.

A game simulation was used to observe 355 bankers and their information seeking and decision processes. Although hypotheses about organizational behavior were not fully supported, it was clear from the study that organization that used more total sources of information were more successful.

Interviews with over 100 executives previously involved in joint ventures were used to study the criteria and outcomes of partnering. The study suggests that successful joint ventures depend on more than complementary resources and require committment to the venture's objectives beyond the short term. Consideration of management styles, strategies, and culture should be part of the venture formation process.

Interviews with 68 managers from 20 Fortune 500 firms were used to discern control variables that managers use to control production and evaluate management performance. It was concluded that financial accounting variables tend to be the most used and as a corollary, the control variables do not serve very well in evaluating progress toward long- term goals. Discussion suggests that accounting variables are most appealing because of their appearance of validity and legitimacy.

Firms in the petroleum industry adopting a multidivisional structure arestudied to observe the impact of structural change on financial performance. The outcome did not clearly show divisional structure to be a determining factor in performance. There is some suggestion that this may have a great deal to do with the vertical integration inherent in the petroleum industry.

Limitations of the diffusion model, which was borrowed from epidemiology are discussed. The lack of flexibility in adapting to different consumer behavior and product distribution patterns requires adaptation of the model. A number of potential improvements to diffusion models are identified, including the Von Bertalanffy model.

A critical analysis of the common agricultural policy (CAP) suggests that the detrimental effects far outweigh the benefits and have created problems such as wage inequities and high prices. Future planning must encompass remedying these problems while retaining beneficial market stability.
